Just got this from Microslop GitHub:

> We're updating how GitHub uses data to improve AI-powered coding tools. From April 24 onward, your interactions with GitHub Copilot—including inputs, outputs, code snippets, and associated context—may be used to train and enhance AI models unless you opt out.

I barely ever use GitHub. When I do, it's when I am forced to because some project I rely on only uses GitHub.

If your project is only using GitHub, please consider migrating.

@rysiek did someone already write a script that allows me to delete or replace/extend all my issues/replies/textual contributions with poisoned content? I remember something similar from around the big reddit exitus…
@metaphil @rysiek What happens to my data if I delete my account? Can I choose to delete all my content?
@tim this *is* microsoft, so probably:
No

@rysiek I'm all for migrating off GitHub, but this looks like an odd item to peg it on: From your description, it only affect usage that is *already* using Copilot, and frankly, if I were using anyone's AI tools, I'd be surprised if it was *not* using its users for data collection.
@chrysn I have been banging the drum of leaving GitHub for years. This is just one more reason to do so. The whole "we're changing the rules, you can opt out" is abusive in and of itself.
@rysiek @chrysn I just double-checked my account and I was opted in. I'm pretty sure I opted out when they first introduced it.
@rysiek
I recommend either @Codeberg or @sircmpwn's sourcehut.org (FWIW, I've been using the latter since at least April 2019 and I love it).

@jbowen heck, maybe even self-host Forgejo or sourcehut itself, or find a hoster.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend sourcehut.org (sr.ht) simply because of its affiliation with Drew DeVault, the person behind the Stallman Report, who has been revealed through his reddit and image board account(s) to support stuff like:
- "14 year old girls should be required to have an IUD installed. Ten years of contraception that requires a visit to the doctor to remove prematurely"
- made a reddit bot called SourceHunt in order to source anime images uploaded had r/pomf on its allowlist (r/pomf was a pedophilic subreddit, it had many loli images)
- has a Platinum account on danbooru and translated many japanese to english text from specifically loli imagery

(sourced from https://dmpwn.info)

So, it's funny when the guy that wrote the Stallman report which (rightfully) put RMS on blast for being a misogynistic fucking creep and his objections towards banning CSAM, is also one of those creeps that interacts with loli.

@alextecplayz @jbowen I, for one, currently do a POSSE strategy - self-hosting my own Forgejo code base and having it configured to push all changes to Codeberg and GitHub, mostly for backup purposes. I might reconsider the latter, given the case.
@alextecplayz @jbowen Thank you for bringing this up.
@rysiek To be honest I'm surprised they weren't doing that before.
@NasaGuy I am guessing they were but were forced to make it explicit for some legal reason
@rysiek Flathub is only available with Github ;-(
@mondstern congratulations to Flathub for supporting Microslop's monopoly.

@rysiek Are there other stores for Linux (which without Github)?

Or do you not use Flathub and download it manually like https://codeberg.org/Arcticons/Arcticons-Linux/releases ?

@mondstern I do not use Flathub. I rely on Debian repositories, or download manually if I absolutely must.
@mondstern
is #postmarketOS possible without Github and Flathub?
@postmarketOS
@rysiek
@oausi @mondstern @rysiek We don't use GitHub (but our own instance of GitLab instead) and Flatpak is optional _and_ can be used with any remote, not just Flathub.
@oausi @mondstern @rysiek

flatpak is, in theory, independent of flathub.
however, flatpak itself and the tooling is
made by flathub.
you can still use it without the flathub remote, if you find/make another.
@oausi @mondstern @rysiek the flathub team isn't really friendly either...

@rysiek What alternative do you suggest to GitHub Copilot users concerned about processing their chatbot history?

@mkljczk not to use Microsoft GitHub Copilot, nor Microsoft GitHub for that matter.

There is a lot of reporting on how using genAI in coding is actually detrimental to productivity and quality of work, and how it leads to de-skilling.

Here's a great long read that doesn't mention Copilot, but rather looks at the effects of using these tools from a more long-term perspective:

If No One Pays for Proof, Everyone Will Pay for the Loss

This post was initially written in French, Si personne ne paie pour la preuve, tout le monde paiera pour le sinistre Let’s start with a truism. In ordinary life, just as in economic life, we have to make decisions without ever knowing everything. Every decision involves some uncertainty, and therefore some risk. Some risks are … Continue reading If No One Pays for Proof, Everyone Will Pay for the Loss →

@rysiek What does all of this (which I agree with) have to do with a github policy change affecting copilot users?
@mkljczk it's just another example of how abusive Microsoft GitHub is. Maybe for somebody this will become the last straw.
@mkljczk @rysiek Codeberg, and learning to write their own code.

@rysiek got the same. Important extra bit:

If you previously opted out of the setting allowing GitHub to collect this data for product improvements, your preference has been retained— your choice is preserved, and your data will not be used for training unless you opt in.

It's still stinky, but less so than you made it seem.

I can confirm my opt-out was still in-effect, for what that's worth.

@rysiek @draeath Maybe it's because I was an early adopt-out-er and they changed how the settings work in the meantime 🤷

That's one thing Mozilla definitely finally did right (aside from the topic whether they should offer an AI bot chat panel in the first place): An AI off-switch that includes all possible future features. Set it and forget it, reliably.

@gunchleoc @draeath I'm going to hold off on the "reliably" part until a few years pass and we see it not being randomly flipped or ignored.
@rysiek Just wait until CoPilot starts submitting pull requests on its own.
@adventure_tense I believe this has already started in some form, and it is obnoxious

@rysiek Funnily enough, I just started moving stuff to Codeberg yesterday

@rysiek I hate the network effect with GitHub so much. It can sometimes be really hard to contact maintainers outside of it.

When I finally find a mail (often gmail for bonus centralization points, but that's another issue), they almost always end up saying something along the lines of "you should have opened an issue on GitHub"

GitHub has shadow banned (I'm pretty sure) my account and other accounts I created after realizing. I could open an issue, and I'd be the only one who can see it.

Is it because of geoblocking? Tracking JavaScript that I won't allow? This platform is just so hostile and I'm so sick and tired of dealing with it.

Right now, I managed to get a "working" GitHub account, but how long will it last?

Considering how generous Codeberg is to open source projects, or that almost anyone can just set up a Forgejo/GitLab instance, I'm really starting to wonder why some won't move away from GitHub after complaining so much about features, slowness, AI, etc.

@rysiek I'm pretty sure they've been already doing this IIRC I read the fine print when I moved my repos and it was stated that the archives of my data would still be used for these purposes. I moved as soon as Microsoft acquired GitHub, because I've a never-Microsoft stance, since Windows 3.1.
