I didn't realize the facebook execs Mozilla acqui-hired last year have been promoted! I was assuming they were still just heading the ads division of Mozilla, but oh boy, I fucking wish.

Now the
former Senior VP of Marketing of facebook (2008-2022, the finest years of facebook) is the CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER of the entire Mozilla.

And the
former VP of Ads in Facebook (2012-2022), is now the Senior VP of Product of Mozilla.

Let me repeat this:

The guy who used to lead the facebook team that was literally "
advertising to teenagers based on their emotional state" is now the guy who decides the direction of Firefox as a product. But hey, let's keep giving Mozilla the benefit of the doubt uh? I'm sure these people-who-should-be-on-trial-in-the-hague are going to do great things for the community!
Mozilla Leadership

Mozilla

@javi

I mean, have people not noticed that Mozilla has been out to destroy everything useful or nice about Firefox for years already?

@violetmadder @javi I guess, but we keep making excuses for them. Crikey this is frustrating. Like I get we can't be moral purists and function under capitalism, but these people are absolutely amoral.

@artemis @javi

They're depraved predators out to ensure that there is NO privacy, freedom, or openness left anywhere.

Nothing functions under capitalism-- or at least not for much longer, anyway.

This is it. Most of us, to a certain degree, have excused their shit as "it's bad but it's what they need to do to survive, it's a lesser evil" some time or another. But holy shit, they have put Satan at the wheel, so I don't know how anyone can keep pretending they are not just as bad as everyone else

@javi @artemis fwiw, it's worse than it appears -- Mozilla is still working with Meta and Google on putting ad tracking into the browser.

(say what you want about the lysine price fixing conspiracy, at least they booked their own meeting rooms and didn't piggyback off of W3C the way that the attribution cartel is doing https://blog.zgp.org/terminator-ending-for-privacy-sandbox/ )

a Terminator ending for Google “Privacy Sandbox”?

@javi

Time to fork Mozilla Firefox, not just edit it.

@kevinrns @javi Been saying that for a while, and sea lions pop back in barking that all forks fail when politics and user demands collide. (Apparently they never heard of LibreOffice, Tenacity, etc. Projects born of behind the scenes f*ckery, people having enough, forking it, and still going.)

Been on Waterfox the last year, hoping Servo is making good progress. If they go public next year, Firefox can go back to Brendan Eich for all I care and become Brave Lite.

#FuckMozilla

@javi Firefox has become the John Fetterman of browsers.
@muhkayoh @javi bahaha this is sad but I cackled irl

@muhkayoh @javi

This just gave me the kick in the pants to get off Firefox. ☄️

@firstprimate @muhkayoh @javi to what? Can you recommend a browser(s)?
@muhkayoh @javi As a PA resident, I hate this so much.
@muhkayoh @javi Fetterman only supports extensions of military aid to Israel

@javi oh that is gross.

Why can't companies be normal!

@jackryder @javi

Probably one of the many reasons Mozilla has lost its way, HARD!

@librewolf is my choice these days!

@justin @javi @librewolf

Libre and Vivaldi

@jackryder @justin @javi @librewolf
Can you, with Libre or Vivaldi, synchronize between the browsers on all your machines? And send tabs?
@harbeider
Not sure tbh, its not a feature I have ever used on any browser.
@jackryder @javi @librewolf
@harbeider @jackryder @justin @javi @librewolf You can sync across machines with Vivaldi

@harbeider @lackattack @justin @javi @librewolf

Oh yeah, Libre and a few others have those functions, or you can get an add-on but buyer beware.

Depending on your needs... you could like... dump them into a repo and sync against it, I suppose?

@jackryder @harbeider @justin @javi @librewolf It's kind of nifty. Log in with your vivaldi account, then enter your separate encryption password to sync your data. I should use it more lol
@lackattack @jackryder @justin @javi @librewolf Okay, great! I have work to do, I guess. :)
@jackryder @lackattack @justin @javi @librewolf
Well, you have to login on your Mozilla account. Then you can synchronize passwords, history, et cetera. And extremely usefull is sending open tabs. For example from a smartphone to your desktop. ->

@javi The biggest issue for me is the lack of browser engines. Forking from Mozilla isn’t enough. An alternative from both chromium and gecko is needed.

There needs to be a new option that won’t come with the baggage or existing slop.

It’s the quicker option but it’s not the best option..

Until that happens every browser will be an offshoot of it and not that much better

@64bithero @javi such a huge task from scratch.

I'd love to see 'Presto' open sourced and returned to the wild:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presto_(browser_engine)

@Vivaldi , either chance this has secretly been in modernization behind the scenes all these years?!

Presto (browser engine) - Wikipedia

@64bithero @javi

There's the Ladybird web browser project, which is a new engine built from the ground up.

https://ladybird.org

Ladybird

Ladybird is a truly independent web browser, backed by a non-profit.

Orion Browser by Kagi

Orion — a web browser designed from the ground-up. Native WebKit speed, full extension compatibility, and absolute privacy is finally together in one browser that respects you.

Orion Browser
@mrgrumpymonkey @TheLastOfHisName @javi I love Kagi and their browser. It’s a still a work in progress (Mac only) and not open source but they are good people ..
@64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi Are there other browser out there that don't rely on Chromium or Firefox forks? I feel like we need a list of everything that's in the works.
@InsiderTreat @mrgrumpymonkey @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi Still Chromium based :( but always good to have options
@InsiderTreat @64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi Most known browsers are forks of either Chromium or Firefox. Of the Chromium browsers, Vivaldi is what I'd have most people use. It was my most used Chromium fork and is very stable. As long as it functions for your purpose, keep using it.
@mrgrumpymonkey
The last remaining hope is https://servo.org/ , a fully independent and open source browser engine. Unfortunately, because of those same two points, it's underfunded and development is very slow. :(
@InsiderTreat @64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi
Servo aims to empower developers with a lightweight, high-performance alternative for embedding web technologies in applications.

Servo is a web rendering engine written in Rust, with WebGL and WebGPU support, and adaptable to desktop, mobile, and embedded applications.

Servo
@phrawzty @InsiderTreat @64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi Turns out they have a mastodon page.
@servo I have since followed. Perhaps one day I can toss em a few extra bucks.
@InsiderTreat @64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi I recently shifted from Vivaldi to Helium. I guess I'll add this to this thread. It's only for Linux & the Appimage seems to break the MX Package installer while it's running. I hope for a .deb package eventually. There's already an AUR for Arch. It's my main Chromium browser on CachyOS.
https://helium.computer/
Helium Browser

The web browser made for people, with love. Best privacy by default, unbiased ad-blocking, no bloat and no noise. Fully open source.

@TheLastOfHisName @javi I hear concerns about the creators political leanings but I am still keeping an eye on it

@javi @joeress wanna give this voice in your next podcast?

I mean, it's probably the last thing any of us wants to hear, but if it's the truth, its the fucking truth 😮‍💨

@javi so what’s a preferred browser choice these days? Thanks for sharing btw.

@moooping
I like Waterfox, which is a version of Firefox but with A.I. and some other crap removed. I love that I can still use the Firefox extensions I'm used to but I won't see whatever marketing/advertising bullshit Mozilla tries to force on us.

@javi

@moooping Waterfox, Vivaldi, Zen all seem like reasonable alternatives. I'm hoping something decent comes out of the work on Servo too.
@moooping @javi I use a combo of Waterfox and LibreWolf, as these two discard the bloated crap that Firefox glues on + they have better security defaults.
@javi That explains so much
@javi wow. They have 37 vice presidents.
Holy crap.
That reminds me of a #BillHerd quote from this the 8-Bit-Guy video about how middle management were multiplying like rats once #JackTramiel left the company. :/

@javi I said it before and I'll say it again:

Mozilla is a "temporarily embarrassed Big Tech corporation".

@javi hey @Vivaldi - can you folks get up to feature parity with regards to plugins and scrolling horizontal tabs so we can finally jump ship to you?
