I didn't realize the facebook execs Mozilla acqui-hired last year have been promoted! I was assuming they were still just heading the ads division of Mozilla, but oh boy, I fucking wish.

Now the
former Senior VP of Marketing of facebook (2008-2022, the finest years of facebook) is the CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER of the entire Mozilla.

And the
former VP of Ads in Facebook (2012-2022), is now the Senior VP of Product of Mozilla.

Let me repeat this:

The guy who used to lead the facebook team that was literally "
advertising to teenagers based on their emotional state" is now the guy who decides the direction of Firefox as a product. But hey, let's keep giving Mozilla the benefit of the doubt uh? I'm sure these people-who-should-be-on-trial-in-the-hague are going to do great things for the community!

edit: Bradwood has been promoted to Chief Business Officer of the Mozilla Corporation, not Chief Financial Officer, my bad

edit2: as
@[email protected] pointed out, even if Graham Mudd's title is "SVP of Product", the bio in his page talks about him as the SVP of Product for the Mozilla Ads division specifically. So it may be the case that he hasn't been promoted and he's just on top of the ad division. That being said, Mozilla doesn't have a Chief Product Officer anymore, and that makes Mudd the most senior product person in the entire Mozilla organization, outranking the VP that seems to be org-wide.
Mozilla Leadership

Mozilla

@javi The biggest issue for me is the lack of browser engines. Forking from Mozilla isn’t enough. An alternative from both chromium and gecko is needed.

There needs to be a new option that won’t come with the baggage or existing slop.

It’s the quicker option but it’s not the best option..

Until that happens every browser will be an offshoot of it and not that much better

@64bithero @javi

There's the Ladybird web browser project, which is a new engine built from the ground up.

@mrgrumpymonkey @TheLastOfHisName @javi I love Kagi and their browser. It’s a still a work in progress (Mac only) and not open source but they are good people ..
@64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi Are there other browser out there that don't rely on Chromium or Firefox forks? I feel like we need a list of everything that's in the works.
@InsiderTreat @mrgrumpymonkey @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi Still Chromium based :( but always good to have options
@InsiderTreat @64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi Most known browsers are forks of either Chromium or Firefox. Of the Chromium browsers, Vivaldi is what I'd have most people use. It was my most used Chromium fork and is very stable. As long as it functions for your purpose, keep using it.
@mrgrumpymonkey
The last remaining hope is https://servo.org/ , a fully independent and open source browser engine. Unfortunately, because of those same two points, it's underfunded and development is very slow. :(
@InsiderTreat @64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi
Servo aims to empower developers with a lightweight, high-performance alternative for embedding web technologies in applications.

Servo is a web rendering engine written in Rust, with WebGL and WebGPU support, and adaptable to desktop, mobile, and embedded applications.

Servo
@phrawzty @InsiderTreat @64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi Turns out they have a mastodon page.
@servo I have since followed. Perhaps one day I can toss em a few extra bucks.
@mrgrumpymonkey
I've been donating €5 a month for the past couple of years. Maybe the money is ultimately getting thrown away, but I like to think that if servo comes to fruition, tart I will have had at least a small part in guaranteeing the future of open technology for the generations to come
@InsiderTreat @64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi @servo
@InsiderTreat @64bithero @TheLastOfHisName @javi @Vivaldi I recently shifted from Vivaldi to Helium. I guess I'll add this to this thread. It's only for Linux & the Appimage seems to break the MX Package installer while it's running. I hope for a .deb package eventually. There's already an AUR for Arch. It's my main Chromium browser on CachyOS.
