🤯 Anyone else here unfortunate enough to suffer from migraine attacks? What are your coping tips and tricks?

Today's chaotic weather in Manchester has knocked me out for the day, a particularly violent one! My biggest migraine trigger is this kind of weather/pressue system.

Photo of a lovely abandoned chateau in France (my bedroom sadly isn't as cosy-looking as this one!). See you all tomorrow 💙

@ObsidianUrbex go outside for a walk or a bike ride, get some fresh air and eat/drink things you like (even it is coffee). I got that advice from a Swiss Neurology professor and I’m glad he told me that alltough I do take a anti-migraine medicine now and then
@fackeldeyfinds
I did go outside afterwards, but I can barely move without throwing up when I get a bad attack. Also intense light sensitivity. Spent most the day in a dark room rushing to the bathroom 😭
@ObsidianUrbex ai….I hope you soon will feel better
Aimovig® 70 mg/-140 mg Injektionslösung im Fertigpen - PatientenInfo-Service

@kanuka
I didn't know there were injection pens!
@ObsidianUrbex They are quite expensive, I guess that´s why. But it´s worth a try. Good luck.
@ObsidianUrbex if it's really bad i lie down in a dark, cool room. in fact the colder the better. it really helps being cool. if not too bad i have coffee (caffeine is anti inflammatory), healthy food & as much fresh air as possible. i hope you feel better soon.
@peediewee feeling better now, after most of the day in bed. I throw up every 20-30 mins for a good few hours, so after that I passed out which was quite nice 💙
@ObsidianUrbex glad your feeling better. migraines are horrible things. sometimes i've got a sore head but no nausea but at times my head's just a little sore but i'm thowing up every 5 mins. it's exhausting. i'm usually in bed for a whole day, sometimes two. i hope you don't get another for a long while.
@ObsidianUrbex I've never managed to narrow down a trigger other than lack of sleep + extra caffeine.

@kelson
Perhaps hormones?

For me it is stress, or big barometric pressure switches. I had problems at work and the migraines got so bad the Dr sent me for a brain scan. "Thankfully", just stress and nothing more sinister

@ObsidianUrbex I had no idea that weather changes could trigger a migraine but you're the 2nd person who mentioned it today. Do we know what is the mechanism for this?

I also hope you can rest and recover. Migraines seem to be the worst.

@elduvelle
I think it's to do with the air pressure changes. Specifically strong lows I believe.

For me thunder and rain storms, if they come on suddenly I am almost guaranteed to get a migraine. I have met a few people who suffer in this way. Ironically I got pretty much laughed at when I spoke to a Dr a few years ago, he categorically stated it's not possible 😶

@ObsidianUrbex Thanks for explaining. yeah, there is still A Lot we don't know about the brain..
@Obsidian Urbex Photography  I am not personally affected, but two family members are... what significantly improved their situtation in the long run was the following: keeping a migraine diary to identify triggers, then reducing triggers whenever possible, avoiding stressors like lack of sleep, irregular meals (yes! Not convenient, but boy does that make a difference). And above all, taking a pain killer as soon as any migraine like pain is felt. They both went through this process under guidance of a neurologist, which I think makes total sense.
@sophie
Do they also have the projectile, regular vomiting? My issue is it feels like a headache, by the time I realise it's a migraine the nausea begins and I'm throwing up violently in a few minutes 😭
@ObsidianUrbex triptans work. But GPs only prescribe triptans in a few days at a time. And pharmacies quite often don't stock them. I use them to relieve episodic cluster headache.
@hicksy2
I do have a pack of 4 sumatriptan, but usually I am being sick soon after the pain starts 😶
@ObsidianUrbex injections or nasal spray are available on prescription, they make sense if you are being sick.
@ObsidianUrbex
Other than my daily prophylactic meds: making sure i have enough sleep, not taking any caffeine, avoiding and coping with stress.

@ObsidianUrbex

Forgive me if this is a repost - I tried earlier and I think it failed...

Anyway:
This is really odd. I've read the replies thus far in the thread and a common theme seems to be pain and or vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Mine is not like that, so I probably need to talk to my GP!

On odd occasions, I will catch a 'sharp' light reflection from something and it will 'stick' in my vision. At that point I know I cannot drive or watch TV or similar for at least half an hour.

Then I start getting the 'kaleidoscope vision' thing in an arc around that point (which is always in the centre of my view). That arc will grow wider, until after about 25 mins, it has expanded outside my field of view, at which point normal life may now continue.

I can confirm however that the advice about a dark room or subdued light helps me a lot when that is going on.

@bytebro
Migraine with "auras" (the lights you describe), definitely get this checked with a drs just in case. Probably nothing to worry about, but might be safe.

I get 2 types of migraine. More minor pain, with these lights and blurry tunnel vision or partial sight loss in one eye. More debilitating ones with intense headache, projectile vomiting every 20 mins or so, usually ends up with me passing out after being sick 5-6x

@ObsidianUrbex

One of my reasons for deferring the Dr thing right now is that the visual artifact thing started about 4yrs ago, but then in the last 6mths I've had a cataract operation on 1 eye, and I'm still wondering if fixing that might have fixed the other. We shall see, I guess!

@ObsidianUrbex Migraines are really horrible, get well soon.
@Stem
They are terrible! I'm back functioning again but still feel a little delicate, tomorrow I should be back at 100% 💙
@ObsidianUrbex For me:
Coffee
Sleep
Meds
Orgasm (I’m not kidding)
Running very warm water over my hands
Protein
Water
@ObsidianUrbex I get ocular migraines, where my vision - usually only in one eye - becomes blurred with wavy interference. It usually occurs when I am over-tired or stressed, and the only solution is to lie down in the dark for a short while until it passes.

@StevenLawsonPhotography @ObsidianUrbex

I get this, but find it comes on if I've not eaten/ drunk enough. Luckily not had when driving. I sort of now know when it is about to happen, and drink water.

@Tae156 @ObsidianUrbex Yes, dehydration can cause it for me, too. I try to drink 2l of water a day but sometimes it's just not possible.
@ObsidianUrbex I get barometric pressure linked migraines as well. I’m so sorry you get them: they’re almost impossible to prevent since we can’t control the weather. I take rizatriptan + naproxen sodium at the first sign of an attack. From traveling to the UK I know that sumatriptan, which is similar, is available in Boots without a prescription. When my pain is particularly bad, I fill the bathtub with a couple of inches of hot water, put my feet in, and then put an ice pack on the back of my head. Ice hats help too. I find that it’s not just one trigger for me that brings on a particularly bad attacks: usually it’s because I’m tired or my hormones are out of wack or I haven’t been eating or drinking enough water. My favorite migraine specialist once told me that migraine brains hate change so you have to become a true creature of habit. Sleep the same hours, eat at the same times, plenty of water. It sucks but that’s what’s really made a difference for me.
