Out of curiosity- what instances are y’all on - and why? What are the pros and cons of the various instances you have chosen?
@Paulatics you should nag the Senate IT to start up an official instance for official accounts of Senators.
@johnefrancis The Senate IT department is scathingly negative about Mastodon. They do not think I should be using it myself.
@Paulatics @johnefrancis You know we'd love to talk to them for you. 🤣
@Paulatics @johnefrancis
That attitude is not unique to your government It department. It is widespread in the US. Very unfortunate.
@Paulatics Did they give a reason for disapproval? A security issue and is this specifically for Mastodon or all social media apps?
@WaitingForTheSign @Paulatics I think hearing their concerns and allowing space for conversation could be productive.

@jeremyjanzen @WaitingForTheSign @Paulatics Video is pretty new to the Senate, too. Whole website refresh was done last year too.

I think it's a case of having a lot on their plate and hosting/running/budgeting for a server is just one more thing on their docket.

@jeremyjanzen @WaitingForTheSign @Paulatics in any event, when I worked in East Block, the only time I chatted with Senate IT was when I was in trouble...
@Paulatics they probably just hate change and uncertainty. It's sad that they blindly recommend all manner of terrible foreign platforms for everything.
@johnefrancis @Paulatics Large IT departments tend to be inherently conservative. It’s the same attitude that led to “nobody ever got fired for buying Microsoft products.” :/
@Paulatics @johnefrancis @Chigaze Remember this: 25 years ago the saying was “nobody ever got fired for buying IBM products." 😛
@Paulatics They wish you weren’t here, and yet the ONLY two senators I know both post on Mastodon. Personally, I love seeing how connected you are with the public.
@Paulatics @johnefrancis You had me at “They do not think…”
@Paulatics @johnefrancis now burning with curiosity about their opinion on Xitter.
@Paulatics @johnefrancis Funny you would think they’d love full control over their server.
@Bowreality @Paulatics @johnefrancis Ya, that does seem weird. I'd be interested to know their reasoning.
@Paulatics @johnefrancis Oh wow! That’s disappointing to hear! FWIW, I’m glad you’re using Mastodon anyway 😀❤️
@Paulatics @johnefrancis that is fascinating! And yet it is ok Senators are on Twitter and Facebook!?
@chris @Paulatics @johnefrancis
Senate IT has their elbows down, same as all the unethical politicians getting nazi waves from musk.
@NMBA @Paulatics @johnefrancis I'm increasingly of the opinion that we need to work on some real #elbowsUp digital sovereignty legislation in all provinces as well as the federal government so that IT departments have a clear direction.
@Paulatics
Are they (the Senate IT department) still wearing togas??
@Paulatics @johnefrancis Well, that's super unfortunate. Your account is the first time (and I am an older dog) I have every felt I know what's happening in the Senate. So thanks for bucking the negativity of those bozos 😺
@Paulatics
I'm curious as to their reasoning, especially concerning running their own instance, and comparing that to X.
@johnefrancis
@Paulatics @johnefrancis I guess they need a billionaire in charge to like a system.
@Paulatics. Has the Senate made any investigation into foreign interference in Canadian elections or government activities? Because it is abundantly clear that X and the Meta products use their algorithms to sway elections and influence governments all over the world, and no reason to think this doesn't include us. @johnefrancis
@Paulatics @johnefrancis what is their line of reasoning?
@j12t @Paulatics @johnefrancis +1. Would love to hear if there are any actual arguments we can engage with, or if it’s just the ol’ “IT loves to grumble at anything they didn’t approve” sort of situation.
@Paulatics
And the federal government has a well deserved reputation for excellence in software & systems
@Paulatics @johnefrancis they probably think you should just use Xtwitter or Facebook instead of them having to host an instance—to which I say, I think a lot of people here would be able to help with that

@Paulatics
@johnefrancis

Do they say why? What's wrong with Mastodon?

If they're afraid of data breaches running their own would allow them full control. Not that Mastodon keeps enough data on you to be much of a security risk.
