I just learned a new nightmare that will also prevent me ever moving back to America.

In Victoria, a used mattress has to be clearly labeled as such by law at sale.

In many American states, mattress stores can simply reupholster a used mattress and sell it as brand new.

I may never sleep again.

@hacks4pancakes lol wtf

That wouldn't fly a second in the EU. That's just nuts.

@hacks4pancakes

That is insane. No thanks ... not a chance...

@hacks4pancakes well you will have to bring your mattress with you 🙂. Let's call it BYOM🙂
@hacks4pancakes TIL and helps to validate the decision to purchase a new Purple mattress. They come sealed from international shipping.

@hacks4pancakes I think this is why, here, mattress tags have big warnings printed on them saying it's illegal to remove the tag unless you're the consumer

because then if you're buying a mattress and it doesn't have the tag, you know it's not new

(not a perfect solution by any means, but)

@hacks4pancakes I would have expected that spending hundreds of nights in hotels had rendered that fact moot. 😏
@hacks4pancakes to be fair.... The requirement is all upholstery needs to be removed, leaving nothing but the inner springs. Then it gets all new fabrics.
@Stinkie @hacks4pancakes that seems a lot more reasonable. Also troublesome enough that it'd never be done for anything except some handmade bespoke mattresses (thinking the kind of thing you might get if you're a near 7 foot tall basketball player)
@fencepost @hacks4pancakes surprisingly there was a really successful factory in my area that remanufactured beds. I think they went under during COVID
@Stinkie practically it looks s lot worse. Look at the videos of people cutting open the top layer of their mattresses

@hacks4pancakes

Does the #EU let you import American mattresses? I'm pretty confident Americans can import European ones. Also, there are new artisinal Amish made mattresses to consider.

@VictimOfSimony @hacks4pancakes Don’t they use different sizes (European mattresses being sized in multiples of 10cm, and US ones being imperial), with the effect that local sheets, bed frames and such would not be usable?

@acb
@hacks4pancakes

That's a good question. Bed sheets aren't precision instruments, so they're close enough that you just want to be aware of the American size measurements in CM, which is easy to grab a reference for. In general, Americans prefer the American "queen size" which is in-between two common European sizes; that's where the misunderstanding comes from. You can mix the continents' gear if you pay attention to what you're buying.

@hacks4pancakes

This is the least of our worries in the US.

@hacks4pancakes that's foul. do we have a list of these states?
@hacks4pancakes That's why you get a latex memory foam one: no way to get that back in the box after it explodes out
@hacks4pancakes not cool to just drop such a cognitohazard without any warning
@hacks4pancakes what the actual fuck… welcome to a normal place
@hacks4pancakes Yet another thing keeping Americans awake at night.
@hacks4pancakes ::internally shrieking ::
@hacks4pancakes you can sleep again.... just not on an American mattress
