We need to separate “tech” companies from videogames. This level of ghoulishness is insufferable. This is not progress in visual tech. This is defacing of an art form by people with ugly souls.

https://www.digitalfoundry.net/features/nvidias-new-dlss-5-brings-photo-realistic-lighting-to-rtx-50-series

Also, fuck Digital Foundry. Like, seriously. That level of oozing over shit Nvidia peddles is disgusting. (and not new for them)
@yurisizov I'm sure this will help game performance as well, ha ha. Most gamers I know will sacrifice fidelity for frames all day;)
@lps Well, this does require two 5090s at the moment, so clearly this is going to work out great!
@yurisizov I'm glad I actually read the article because the way you're describing it, it seemed like they'd be foaming at the mouth to try it. This comes off to me as much more neutral than you implied. Sure, I would prefer a recognition that this technology is poisoned like all corporate "AI" is, but not criticizing something isn't the same as shilling for it. This article was mildly positive and curious at worst, and even somewhat apprehensive at times.

@wombatpandaa They are, in fact, repeating marketing nonsense from Nvidia without challenging it. On every platform they sell this as the future of in-game lighting, they talk about how this doesn’t artificially change anything in game, and that it somehow restores the original creative intent that gamedevs were unable to implement themselves.

But thanks for letting me know that this doesn’t pass your threshold for shilling.

@yurisizov I've looked into it more since I made that comment and I'll admit that I was wrong. With the context I now have, it's clear to me that DF were gassing a technology that they instead should have given much more scrutiny.

@wombatpandaa Hey, I appreciate that you've reached out! It seems that DF themselves have somewhat walked back their tone from the video and the article, and the team is split in opinions and concerns.

I'm sorry if my own response was too harsh. This crap makes me very upset and angry, and I do not feel there is a lot of space for the middle ground anymore.

@yurisizov wait wait wait wait wait wait wait

DLSS changes the model's design??????
worse of all, it looks like ai slop

@ozamidas I mean, yeah, it literally is an AI generated image over the game. Just, in realtime, using two 5090s. It would be idiotic as is, but as they peddle it as the next version of DLSS, it’s just catastrophic.
@yurisizov yeah but i just don't remember that happening with the older versions like the first or second, either i am just an idiot or Nvidia is using some openAI thing to make this aggressive character changes
@ozamidas I’m pretty sure it’s their own tech. DLSS has always been ML based. They are just moving it past image reconstruction. It’s not a model swap, more like a faceapp kind of effect. Though Nvidia is capable of replacing models at runtime too, that’s what RTX Remix does.
@ozamidas @yurisizov Nvidia has an AI research team that can train chatgpt-like image generation. Theres like 20 companies doing that and openAI has no special sauce. Of course, DLSS5 makes all of this feel like AI slop BECAUSE IT IS and removes the artistic vision

@yurisizov besides everything…

I can’t imagine trying to design the scene to look like the creative vision if you have a toggle to change the appearance so dramatically!

@leroy Well, fuck them artists is the message, I guess. Like all “AI”, the goal is to erase human voices.
@yurisizov I'm reminded of that DF Q&A video from a while back where one of the questions was about how things like RTX Remix screw with artistic intent and Alex shaking his head like he didn't think it mattered.

@DKesserich They’ve been disappointing for a long time, yeah. And I can’t really tell if this is them cowardly making sure Nvidia doesn’t blacklist them (like they do with honest reviewers), or if they are genuinely completely apathetic to the art form rendering tech is supposed to be made for.

Either way, games are like empty benchmarks for them. Not something to be appreciated.

@yurisizov wtfffff is this shit
@RoseThorndyke I think that’s what they call “neural rendering”, a.k.a. what if genai imagined the entire image roughly based on the original frame, ditching any artistic intent, style, and voice.
@yurisizov I really hope that this slopification of game art will result in more studios going for stylized and unique art direction, just to stand out from games embracing this crap. Makes me want to re-install Dishonored or Bioshock Infinite more than anything.
@okr Thing is, as a developer you won’t have a say here. Maybe not this time, but eventually their goal is to replace your voice and input.
@yurisizov I get that the end goal is selling this as a filter that you can feed any input and make it "realistic" (can't wait for the visual nightmares it produces) and in the end: if players want to do that, who's gonna stop them. But I truly believe that games with unique and intentional art (even if it's simple/stylized) will stand out and be appreciated more for what they are once everything else is turned into slop. Or at least, I hope so...

@yurisizov so anyone can soon slopify/yassify any game at the very cheap cost of just a whole nother highend graphics card! 🧟

That's one way to try to increase your sales, I guess... 🤦‍♀️

@yurisizov I find it hard to believe that someone would have been satisfied at this and call their creation complete.

@JigenD Why? And why does it matter what you think is qualified to be the end result of someone else’s creative process? Open the article, if you will, there are screenshots from other games, including the new RE. Even if you are somehow an authority on what constitutes finished art, I’m sure that example will be sufficient.

But like… What the fuck is wrong with you? Hell!..

@yurisizov The idea that everything that already exists is pure and complete and perfect and new things are to be shunned and hated isn't a new one, but it is a bad opinion to have.

There's some objective problems with the tech they showed off, and some imagined ones by the community, unfortunately. I probably wouldn't call it 'good enough' to get the DLSS title, but I also think it is objectively improving the fidelity 80% of the time.

@JigenD @yurisizov this has nothing to do with "complete" or "incomplete". you're assuming the point of art is to just keep iterating towards some weird ideal perfect realism bullshit.

the issue is that this is just replacing actual art with auto-generated slop bullshit, leaving no room for actual artistic intent in the first place.

@joshg @yurisizov There is objective truth here. Correct lighting is better, anti-aliasing is better, correct shadows are better, and lighting that illuminates polygons correctly is better.

No artist intended these incomplete aspects of real time 3d game graphics.

These are objectively more complete, and to not have them is incomplete.

@JigenD @yurisizov you should ask actual artists about that, buddy
@joshg @yurisizov You should take a step back and look at the mental gymnastics you're doing to hate a specific piece of graphics rendering technology and how it's making you behave.
@JigenD
You're a guy, right? I'm asking because, if you were a woman, you would have seen (I mean really seen, as in pissed off) all those "ai improvements" performed on women's characters through video games, also known as "making them look as smooth underage dolls with massive boobs and impractical clothing"... And you would understand the problem.
When artists create something, they intend something. Allow this crap now and tomorrow, the feature will be user configurable. Then all women will look like the gamer's favourite porn stars with their next door neighbour's voice, all Blacks and Latinos will be white, and so on. 1/2
@joshg @yurisizov

@JigenD
Then all those games where you shoot Nazis or Gangsters or whatever, will be revamped in real-time to shoot women with blue hair, or Black dudes raising cardboards asking for justice.

There is an issue at stake here.

And I mean, why stop here?
Let's apply this filter to all Pixar animations, anime, cartoons, and so on. These can surely be rendered in a more realistic way, after all. It's not like anyone cares about intellectual property or art any more.

And someday, those guys will have nice glasses and, with a click, they will apply a filter on the woman they are having sex with. And they will have reached their goal.

2/2

@joshg @yurisizov

@yurisizov worse even: #nvidia did a crudged-up version of #SLI in that the #DLSS5 was done with a SEPERATE #RTX5090

WHO THE FUCK IS THEIR ADRESSABLE MARKET WITH THIS SHITE???

@yurisizov we just can't seem to move away from this
@yurisizov No one can afford a new GPU right now, and all component prices are just gonna go up. The games that are going to sell in the next 2 years are good games with a strong art style that run on potatoes. Cos very few people are going to buy 2 5090s to play Elder Scrolls 6 lathered in slop.
@yurisizov it reminded me of this...
@leberschnitzel @yurisizov The guys that "improve" female videogame characters are the same guys than say that "women are better without makeup"?

@yurisizov A slap in the face to artists and designers. "Fuck your artistic intent, pore count is the only measure of aesthetic appeal"

This has nothing to do with lighting technology either, what are they on about

@ringlov At this point, DF cannot exist without being in bed with Nvidia, it seems. They get exclusives, thus they must sell the marketing spiel fully and utterly. :/
@yurisizov integrity is going extinct 😔

@yurisizov

It looks like fucking trash, how could they possibly think this would fly?

@dogiedog64 Bemuses me as well. And like I could see it being shown off as a side experiment to their whole RTX Remix thing, but shoving it into their upscaling tech?! Jesus Christ, they are dumb.
@yurisizov awful news, I’m speechless 😶

@yurisizov

Investors who’ve poured trillions into anything related to so-called “AI” demand a return. Companies are under intense pressure to deliver that return. Many will fail. It means companies will resort to, stoop to, desperate, thoughtless attempts at lock-in in pursuit of profit. I think this latest nVidia news is a play for consumer and game industry lock-in, even though the public smells the enshittification right away.

@yurisizov the old "tech problem": just because it's an interesting engineering challenge doesn't mean you need to solve it.

paired with the old "sales problem": some idiots will pay for it, right?

@yurisizov yoooo but the backlash is real in their very own comments section 😁 “this will kill your reputation”.
@sayonaraminasan Yeah, DF has been completely destroyed on their own website, on YouTube, and also on Bluesky. Alas, as awful as shills are, it’s Nvidia who needs to be beaten badly with a belt.
@yurisizov of course there are the “enlightened AI bro of the future” comments there as well. There really is no defending this though.. AI is not inevitable, it’s a choice. Shame on Nvidia.
@yurisizov Anybody else notice that it makes all faces more Caucasian?
@yurisizov Oof. That's so obviously Slop that it reminds me of the first months of the DALL-E release. 🤢
@yurisizov she's not even looking in the same direction?
@yurisizov Deep Learning Super Slopinator
@yurisizov I'm really glad that the comments there also see the problems. Sometimes I have the impression the Fediverse is the only place where people look at this and don't praise everything.
@kaiserkiwi This time there is a strong backlash everywhere I can see. On their website, on YouTube, and on Bluesky as well!
@yurisizov It's as simple as Nvidia making lots of money right now, off of the genAI wave, so they're pushing it forward and onto customers (whether it's actually any good or not, and ethics aside) because they want to make more and more money.
Everything else is just noise to them.
It's very frustrating...
