This is the original parody article. It was updated at the bottom with Newt's X account post thinking it was a serious article and approving of the idea.
Thank goodness we can still rely on Newt to be the voice of sanity and reason.
In response to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, former House Speaker New Gingrich calls for a “dozen thermonuclear detonations” to create “a waterway wider than the Panama Canal, deeper than the Suez, and safe from Iranian attacks.”
What a fscking MORON.
Oh my god, is there a contest among the republicans for who can invent the new dumbest idea?
What if instead of destroying your hurricane you make it angrier with all the nukes and the burning oil and you get a hypercane instead.
The oceans would have to heat up quite a bit more before that can happen.
But maybe if Rosneft, Aramco, and Exxon Mobil try really hard we can hit those 50 C/122 F sea temperatures needed to support a hypercane.
Also death to the oil & gas industry.
@newsguyusa a "dozen" seems far too few.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Plowshare - "A project proposed in a 1963 memorandum by [LLNL] would have used 520 2-megaton nuclear explosions to excavate a canal through the Negev Desert ... as an alternative route to the Suez Canal."
https://www.osti.gov/opennet/servlets/purl/453701.pdf has a device spacing of 1300 feet for 2MT bombs.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pechora%E2%80%93Kama_Canal says "potentially several hundreds of nuclear charges" for ~40km.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Carryall proposed 22 devices for a ~2 mile cut.
Indeed, noted non nuclear physicist Gingrich
Our only hope is that the idiot in charge doesn't see that message
OMG.... could this be the start...
Don't worry, they're working on it.
Newt Gingrich, like Trump, is a skilled hand at ragebait and clickbait that will get boosted & amplified.
Unfortunately, nonsense like this is often repeated often enough that it becomes part of Republican dogma & billionaire policy platforms like Project 2025.
There's likely some Israeli billionaire still promoting the Ben Gurion canal.
"Mr. Gingrich, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

I take your point about repeating and legitimising garbage, but in Steve's case, posting nonsense like that is just comic relief for his followers 😀
