In response to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, former House Speaker New Gingrich calls for a “dozen thermonuclear detonations” to create “a waterway wider than the Panama Canal, deeper than the Suez, and safe from Iranian attacks.”
@newsguyusa Doesn't he have a spouse with cancer he can divorce while cheating instead of talking about anything he doesn't have experience with?
@newsguyusa I have been waiting to see who would be the first one to suggest this.
@newsguyusa yes, Newt. Now, please follow the nurse back to your room. They're about to serve your favourite: lemon jello.
@newsguyusa Please tell me this is an article from The Onion
@SunDancer @newsguyusa
The idea was a joke post, but Newt didn't get that and think it's a good idea.
@katrinakatrinka @SunDancer @newsguyusa Is there any reputable source showing Gingrich even joked about this? It sounds false.

@cgervasi @SunDancer @newsguyusa
This is the original parody article. It was updated at the bottom with Newt's X account post thinking it was a serious article and approving of the idea.

It's Time

An open letter to Secretary Hegseth

ChinaTalk
@katrinakatrinka @SunDancer @newsguyusa The screenshot looks real. It's hard to believe, but many things that are hard to believe these days turn out to be true.
@newsguyusa Let Newt be the first to traverse the new radioactive passage

@newsguyusa

Thank goodness we can still rely on Newt to be the voice of sanity and reason.

@[email protected] Christ alive these people are despicable ghouls. NUKING several countries just to make way for oil ships?
Can't believe Newt Gingrich is seriously suggesting to 'sea of irradiated cobalt' the strait of hormuz.....
#uspol
@newsguyusa I thought he was dead already
@newsguyusa no risk of radiation...newt is such a dumbass
@newsguyusa Really showing that supervillain energy here. :/
@newsguyusa These old dinosaurs will stop at nothing to get at the remains of older dinosaurs...
@newsguyusa Newt, the wannabe-trump from the 80s, that's the guy we were missing so badly 😖
@newsguyusa Well that is a new level of crazy

@newsguyusa

In response to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, former House Speaker New Gingrich calls for a “dozen thermonuclear detonations” to create “a waterway wider than the Panama Canal, deeper than the Suez, and safe from Iranian attacks.”

What a fscking MORON.

@newsguyusa I'm sure the UAE and Oman won't mind at all.
@newsguyusa You sure there's a new Gingrich? That sounds a bit like the old one.
@newsguyusa
Sounds like a good plan, devised by an expert in thermonuclear effects and international rights!

@newsguyusa

Oh my god, is there a contest among the republicans for who can invent the new dumbest idea?

@alienghic @newsguyusa What if we sent the hurricane in with the nuke, and then it destroyed the hurricane AND made a canal? Would that work?

@Andres4NY @newsguyusa

What if instead of destroying your hurricane you make it angrier with all the nukes and the burning oil and you get a hypercane instead.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypercane

Hypercane - Wikipedia

@alienghic @newsguyusa omg, do not like!

@Andres4NY

The oceans would have to heat up quite a bit more before that can happen.

But maybe if Rosneft, Aramco, and Exxon Mobil try really hard we can hit those 50 C/122 F sea temperatures needed to support a hypercane.

Also death to the oil & gas industry.

@alienghic @newsguyusa least they could do is come up with *original* dumb ideas https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Plowshare
Project Plowshare - Wikipedia

@newsguyusa a "dozen" seems far too few.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Plowshare - "A project proposed in a 1963 memorandum by [LLNL] would have used 520 2-megaton nuclear explosions to excavate a canal through the Negev Desert ... as an alternative route to the Suez Canal."

https://www.osti.gov/opennet/servlets/purl/453701.pdf has a device spacing of 1300 feet for 2MT bombs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pechora%E2%80%93Kama_Canal says "potentially several hundreds of nuclear charges" for ~40km.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Carryall proposed 22 devices for a ~2 mile cut.

@dalke @newsguyusa

Indeed, noted non nuclear physicist Gingrich

@newsguyusa

Radioactive oil. Sounds good.

Would that give my car superpowers, too?

@newsguyusa
As Jeff Tiedrich has pointed out elsewhere, old Newt failed to read to the bottom of his re-post about atomic-bombing a canal to bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
There it pointed out that anyone with a working brain could see that this couldn't work.
PS: Why isn't Gingrich dead yet?

@newsguyusa

Our only hope is that the idiot in charge doesn't see that message

@newsguyusa In the UK there is an expression for very drunk people, and that term is "Pissed as a newt" ("Pissed" being another word for unbelievably drunk).
Coincidence?
@BackFromTheDud @newsguyusa she turned me into a newt! (i got better)

@newsguyusa

OMG.... could this be the start...

@newsguyusa Newt seems to assume Donald's war to stop Iran from ever threatening Hormuz is doomed to fail.
@newsguyusa yep yep, what the world needs right now clearly is a dozen thermonuclear detonations
@newsguyusa - when in a hole, stop digging. ESPECIALLY when that digging involves the use of hundreds (not a dozen) thermonuclear weapons. Th lunatics have well and truly broken out of the asylum they took over and are now instead in the US administration.
@newsguyusa
Is Newt in the Epstein files too?
@newsguyusa Can you imagine what the Speaker of the House would recommend if it was a plumbing problem and he was a plumber? I know, he could not pass the education tests, but still.
@newsguyusa WTAF. I don't want to live on this planet anymore, and haven't for quite a long time now.
@newsguyusa The most astonishing thing about this is that Old Newt apparently got this idea from a satirical letter.
The letter's last paragraph said something to the
effect that its views don't apply to anyone with brain cells!
Newt is a long time science fiction fan. It seems that in his dotage he can't distinguish scientific fact from fiction.

@Barbramon1 @newsguyusa

Newt Gingrich, like Trump, is a skilled hand at ragebait and clickbait that will get boosted & amplified.

Unfortunately, nonsense like this is often repeated often enough that it becomes part of Republican dogma & billionaire policy platforms like Project 2025.

There's likely some Israeli billionaire still promoting the Ben Gurion canal.

@newsguyusa "hey honey, have you seen my prunes? I'm blocked up worse than the Straits of Hormuz!"

@newsguyusa

"Mr. Gingrich, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.

Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

@newsguyusa Newt Gingrich is a blithering fucking idiot.
@newsguyusa It's shit like this that makes me feel better about my own mental health issues. I'm unwell, and that's never been in question. But I'm not THAT unwell!
@newsguyusa Blocking you for now. Please stop this shit! Its bad enough the press has to repeat what Trump admin says, but platforming this is inexcusable.

@tasket @newsguyusa

I take your point about repeating and legitimising garbage, but in Steve's case, posting nonsense like that is just comic relief for his followers 😀

@newsguyusa He is a deeply unserious man.
