Nerds! Is there a location tracker (like a physical tag) that I could put in a backpack and attach to an app so my family could see where I was at any given point in time? Ideally I'd like one that draws a fun little map with my route. AirTags? Do they draw a little map or just say current location?

[NOTE: I am not recommending anyone else does this, and it won't be permanent, I just have a limited use case for which I would like to use one of these things]

FYI, as someone asked me to update. It looks like this is the closest to what i need - https://safetagtracking.com/products/safetag-mini-4g?currency=GBP&language=en&country=GB but I can only share location with others for 3 days and ideally I need a permanent share on it (which I will eventually turn off obvs). So if anyone has any info on something like this but with longer-term sharing and/or better battery life hit me up

@girlonthenet Ah, apparently you can share an Apple Tag’s location with other people. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/iph419cc5f28/ios

In Find My on iPhone, share an AirTag so you won’t receive unwanted separation alerts.

@arratoon @girlonthenet yeah AirTags should provide exactly what you want
@girlonthenet I *think* the Transcontinental race uses https://www.findmespot.com/en-us/products-services/spot-trace but it's geared to very remote usage and satellite comms. I can't find info on the battery life.

@girlonthenet so it's not a tag-based solution but you can share your location with specific people via Google maps for as long as you are away and then turn it off when done. (I'm assuming here that you'll have your phone with you on the big trip!)

I've used it quite a bit (when out walking so my SO can see where I'm up to) and even if you're not using navigation/maps on the phone it works and doesn't drain the battery - not 100% on the details but it generally seems to use cell tower/ wireless network info and only reports when they check)

Will also do specific trip notifications, i.e. you set a route for the day and your ETA and it will only allow them to see you for the duration and turn off when you get there.

@girlonthenet you’re on the Android ecosystem? Apple?
@Colman apple

@girlonthenet Is this a different use case than just sharing your phone location for a limited time?

I think there are running apps that track a route, and folks use them occasionally to draw penises on the map

@SnyperWolf yeah I need something that will do it over a much longer time period.
@girlonthenet AirTags tend to show current location, I don't think there's a location history map, that I know of anyway. Happy to be wrong on that!
@girlonthenet If your able to self-host some software, OwnTracks has an app that runs on your phone, which sends back to a private server. If you give people access to that server, they can see the location history of your phone.
So, a privacy conscious option, but a bit faffy to set up.
@girlonthenet I don't think AirTags allow real-time tracking from a distance (I have them on various things but usually use them to find them at home), as they don't do GPS. What I think you need is a GPS tracker - they are also sold as pet trackers (I am assuming you don't just want to use your phone - I think most phones allow you to have others track them by now).
@lipow ah yes! Super helpful thank you! and yeah I basically don't wanna use my phone cos of battery life, I'll look into GPS trackers! Thank you so much

@girlonthenet @lipow FWIW I use Apple’s phone Find My location tracking all the time without any real impact on battery. If you're concerned then I'd suggest trying it - phone location services are nowhere the battery hogs they used to be.

People think me & my wife are weird because we can know where the other is at any time, but it has saved a lot of burnt dinners over the years! And when we were both driving around the country caring for elderly parents, it showed we arrived safely

@thirstybear @lipow can it plot a route or just give in-the--moment data?
@girlonthenet @lipow In the moment, I’m afraid. There's always apps like Strava & Komoot that I think can produce a real-time plot (for a subscription?), but I can't vouch for battery-friendliness of 3rd party apps.

@thirstybear @girlonthenet @lipow the Check In feature may also be of interest to you:

@lipow @girlonthenet we use AirTags for this and it definitely provides real time tracking.

We have one on our dog collar, and as long as someone with an iPhone is near him, we will always get real time info. I was able to share the tag so my whole family can see him.

We also have a bunch of them for luggage and backpacks. But we tend not to share those.

IMO if you have an iPhone, it’s by far the easiest solution.

@girlonthenet I know of paid for services like Garmin GPS tracker and, one we use for our dog, Tractive. Or use an old android phone and some apps on there. If you find something please post here as would like to know what's out there.
@girlonthenet I have AirTags on my bikes, and in a couple of bags. AFAIK it’s only me who can track them.
@girlonthenet RevK @revk used to have a GPS logger in his collection of available circuit boards - not sure if it could send live positioning data or whether it was better suited for saving your tracks to memory until you download it. In any case can't see it on his store right now.

@nmeth @girlonthenet Mostly for later processing, but obviously all is possible.

And, to be honest, happy to work on such a project, but one has to wonder - get an iPhone and find my friends?

Yes, I could make something way more privacy preserving, if needed.

TBH battery management on any project is the biggest issue.

But yes, say it you want me to have a play... I've done this on a cruise ship once.

@revk @nmeth ah thank you! I appreciate the info. Find My doesn't quite work for what I need because I'd like historical route data, but I think I've found a solution now - thanks!
@girlonthenet @nmeth Makes sense, and yes, I definitely did that on a cruise once. Let me know if I can help in future.
@girlonthenet Do they need to be able to see your position live? If not then either a GPS logger (or your phone recording location) can give you a timestamped GPX file that you can load into anything like komoot for people to see.
@ross ooh that's v helpful thank you!
@girlonthenet You can't seem to buy the one I bought a while ago (<cough> before the iPhone had GPS) anymore but "gps logger" on your favourite store shows they still exist. Press button, they record the time/location, then you can do with that what you want. Or just use Strava. :)
@ross amazing thank you so much!

@girlonthenet I believe if you're ok Apple AirTag can share with others, but you need to be near to other AirTag reading devices, so if you're hiking it probably won't work well, same for the Samsung ones I believe.

If you're out hiking or similar you may need an active GPS tag or similar, unfortunately I don't know much about them beyond they exist, but some sports kit places may do them for personal safety.

@deviantollam I don't suppose you've got any insights as you've tested the fudge out of stuff like this?

@girlonthenet
Garmin has one such solution.

@girlonthenet tractive dog tracker - anyone on your account can watch in real time, see history on a map, etc. watchers can activate "live mode" for short periods of extremely high accuracy... they can also turn on a light and make your tracker "beep" so... that could be a problem 😅 premium subscription gives you 365 days of playback history on a map and heatmap view.

or i have friends who use things like Queclink's GL310MG for endurance racing, but i don't know if it is easy to self-serve mapping/apps outside of an event. you can subscribe to services like gpsgate but i don't know if that is crazy expensive. they might integrate with strava. anything that integrates with services like strava could allow real time tracking - but most wearables would probably struggle to do a full day without charging on an always-on live tracking

i have a friend who recently did a 2-3000km hike with a tracker dot... i'll see if i can find out what they used

update: they used garmin messenger so relied on phone to update online- might not be ideal

@girlonthenet my best friend and her family have been using the free version of Life360 for a couple of years. She finds it brilliant.

https://www.life360.com/en-gb

Unfortunately, not a tag though.

@girlonthenet a Garmin InReach mini can provide the tracking and maps for others, but its a paid service. As for reliability, etc its pretty much top notch, its the system/tech used for ultra marathon races, etc issued to all participants … maybe overkill for your application, but its damn good in its niche.
@girlonthenet I use RideWithGPS, which I like for lots of other reasons, but it’s definitely hard on battery life - I have an external battery in a top tube bag for rides over two hours or so.
@girlonthenet there’s an app called OutdoorActive that has a feature that does this (your friends/family can log in to the website to see your route). I’ve not used it but I know someone who does.
@girlonthenet we’ve used this for field trips and vehicle tracking, small enough to clip to a backpack; uses gps satellite and has sos functionality. Requires a monthly plan but one can sign up only when required. Whether outdoor stores hire them out and you just need to set up a plan individually? https://outdoorgpsshop.co.uk/products/spot-gen4-satellite-gps-personal-tracker
Spot Gen4 - Satellite GPS Personal Tracker

@girlonthenet are you a user of a smartphone?

Because if you're going to be hiking or out someplace away from other people, any tracker type device you use is just going to be pinging off of your own personal phone most likely.

If that's the case, eliminate the middle step and just share location with people from your phone directly maybe? Or is there a battery life issue that's a concern or is there a different concern

@girlonthenet If you're going to be super-remote, you might want to look at something like this https://www.findmespot.com/en-us

I helped beta-test these a way long time ago and they still worked when you were way off the grid because they talked up to satellites rather than cell towers

The world has evolved since then, so there may be way better stuff available, but I think the key concern is to make sure your device can talk to something when you need it to

SPOT Satellite Communication Devices | Saved by SPOT | US

SPOT sells affordable satellite safety devices, delivering reliable location-based tracking, messaging and lifesaving SOS technology. SPOT products monitor your location, connecting to emergency responders while out of cellular range.

@girlonthenet The thing about tracking tags is that they're Bluetooth devices, and they rely on some nearby phone, constantly scanning, to go "oh, I recognize that as a tracker device, so I'm gonna report over cellular that I just saw it here." But those phones are stupid picky about which devices they acknowledge. So if my Pixel sees an Apple Airtag, it doesn't care. But if it sees a Pixel tag, it'll report in. Apple and Samsung also only report on their own tags. Find a satellite tracker.
