Trying to spend more time on Mastadon. Who do I need to follow to better track US politics, Ukraine and The Middle East/Iran?

Repost for better signal boost?

I’m Tim, I run The Counteroffensive, on Ukraine, and Iran War Dispatches, which launched on Saturday!

@timkmak You could also follow hashtags like #ukrane , #iran for a while so you can see who is posting stuff of use to you.
@timkmak oh, and FYI you can make URLs clickable in Mastodon by starting them with "https://".
@jamesmarshall oh nooooo
@timkmak but you can also edit your posts!

@timkmak @emptywheel
@atrupar (posts more on threads)
Plus you can follow various people on threads & bluesky from here too.

@heidilifeldman

@timkmak @EugeneMcParland has been posting a lot on the matter.

@timkmak

Follow the hashtags, or put them in your account 'description'.

@timkmak Flipboard does have a lot of feeds of regular news sources you can follow.
@timkmak if you just search for users with Flipboard it's basically just the rss feeds of those companies

@timkmak Others have mentioned Anders Puck. There's also @randahl, who often posts about Ukraine.
@timkmak Tim, meet Dr. Malka Older @older, executive director of Global Voices, an idependent international news organization (among other things). Dr. Older, meet Tim, a US Army vet who runs an idependent news organization on the ground in Ukraine (and is now has reporters covering Iran from the region). I expect you two have a lot to talk about. 😁
@jappel @timkmak nice to meet you Tim! I'm not on here as much as on bluesky, but happy to chat if you like, and you can also follow @globalvoices

@timkmak for Ukraine, a voice from inside: @dim0kq

@kravietz is worth reading most of the time (I would totally disagree with him about nuclear energy, but he's not riding that horse too hard, so, doesn't matter for me now)

@timkmak What @harkank posts can be relevant to you, esp. regarding SIGINT. Usually posts in German, but I think worth translating.
@timkmak oh, don't worry too much, you'll get news about US anything whether you want it or not.
@timkmak @bolts is really good for a wide scala of US politics
@timkmak Has anyone mentioned @EugeneMcParland? He’s a must-follow on Ukraine.
@timkmak
It looks like most relevant accounts have already been mentioned. Well done all!
@timkmak Professor Timothy Snyder of U Toronto and Yale Univ is an expert scholar on authoritarian methods and is an expert on Eastern Europe and the Ukraine. He has predicted the activities of Russia and Putin before they went into Ukraine in 2012 and 2022, and he also has a substack newsletter. I have other sources in my posting here:

@timkmak
John Quiggan, maybe.
@timkmak I find @EuromaidanPress worth following for Ukraine news.

@timkmak Standard recommendation for questions like this: start by following hashtags. They propagate reasonably well across the network and will expose you to people talking about the things you care about. That will give you people to follow.

Also of note: unfollowing isn't a hostile act - so follow folks, see what happens, pick up some of the people they interact with and unfollow anybody who's ending up being more noise than signal in your feed.
