What a stupid time to have a degree in International Relations.
@evacide true. all it takes is „relations”.
@evacide oh no. Someone just started her intl relations degree. Is it really not important anymore?
@ahalam can't say anything about the relevancy of the degree, but think right now you can go ask a toad in the swamp about the state of international relations in 6 months and get no worse answers than asking an expert in it. Nothing is sacred anymore and common sense is lying in bed with a bad fever.
@evacide

@ahalam @evacide It's more about being intricately aware and educated in how profoundly we are fucked.

(And the less than optimistic mental state that comed from this awareness)

@evacide I can't imagine the level of screaming going on inside your head right now. Because I have no such degree, and it's pretty damn loud.
@evacide the problem with this degree and having a big family is that once you sit down to explain what's happening in the world, your family members and relatives might say "You are wrong, I saw a different explanation on Twitter".
@evacide I'm still trying to figure out how my favorite bartender with a Master in international relations pivoted to a career in cybersecurity. However she did it, nice job!
@evacide im sure none of the people pushing the buttons have one
@evacide So many political scientists, war everywhere, so many physicists, oil, coal and gas combustion everywhere, so many theologians, hatred everywhere, so many biologists and physicians, illnesses everywhere. We have the knowledge and the insight, but humanity lacks will and consistency.
@evacide much love from here, just survive this period and it will get better. Or some other famous last words :).

@evacide

The point of a gun, thats the current modus for diplomacy.

@xs4me2 @evacide And it’s failing miserably - yet they keep trying.
@evacide this was peak of humour in Ukraine 2022
@gonzo_askold Ukrainian humor is the darkest substance known to man. I respect it.
@evacide I don’t know. Oolon Colluphid did pretty well with a series of “I told ya so” books.
@evacide
What's the right time to get it?
@evacide you’re telling me.
@evacide I did a screenshot of that one, and sticked it on our wall at the office. As usual, you're spot-on.
@evacide I think otherwise. It's the perfect in these times to have a degree in International Relations, since you can test theories against complex practical oddities. And sure deduce and understand more than we ordinary people can.
@evacide I agree in the sense you understand what is going on from multiple view points and also know what is going wrong and how it could get worse and why, and that we’re ruled by idiots.
@evacide Yes, there are some people who think that IR are nothing but "let's throw some bombs at them"!
@evacide Damn, I wonder if any global relations degrees are gonna go extinct after the Orange Cockwomble dies and democracy is restored in America, because no self-respecting country would want to globally relate to the Fascist States in any way after this nonsense.
@evacide my sociology degree can go in the bin, too. My conclusions about group dynamics are not academic anymore.
@evacide my cousin just finished her masters in international law 😭
@evacide I feel both seen, attacked and extremely related to, thanks...
@evacide I resemble that remark
@evacide try being a lawyer. "The Constitution is a thing we used to have which..."
@evacide it was the best of times, it was the worst of times

@draNgNon @evacide such degrees made sense in times when foreign actors, dignitaries, diplomats and heads of state could be expected to follow rules of logic and decorum.

Logic and decorum no longer exist.

@tezoatlipoca @evacide yes but that's the only stable path out of this mess

@evacide

...or a degree on Russian and East European Studies.

@evacide @briankrebs This is true at least twice a decade, at least since the 60’s.

@evacide

I heard an interview recently with President Alexander Stubb of Finland, who has a PhD in international politics.

It was refreshing to hear a coherent discussion of the state of the world.

At minimum it was possible to ask questions and challenge assumptions, instead of respond to random nonsense.

@evacide Should have gotten into property development like Kushner and that other moron cosplaying diplomats
