Inline skating the mean streets of NYC since 1993 and still alive to kvetch about it.

During the day, webmaster for some scientists, Java netCDF dataviz and cartography coder.

Otherwise, a Jack Methodist, somewhere left of center and (sigh) a recovering Idahoan.

Plus various experiences and opinions of no merit.

Rolled to #ConeyIsland #Brooklyn in Saturday's amazing weather, posting up 46 miles round trip of #InlineSkating #NYC. But alas, I will not be taking the Narrows route the next time I head that way because some sections of the Shore Parkway bikepath were so much worse than I remembered, and I went that way just four monthd ago!
I could be wrong about the delay before new asphalt. #NYCDOT's resurfacing schedule showed some locations as to be paved almost immediately. One of them was Ave A, but I did not see such activity last night. Maybe there were delays due to the rain Monday evening.
AFAICT, this is a fake license plate, possibly bought from some idiot on Etsy. It wasn't until the third look at the photo that I realized that typeface layout was really F'ed up. May whoever operates this vehicle get broadsided tomorrow.

Out #InlineSkating in #NYC Thursday evening and, oh, hey, street resurfacing season has begun. Encountered a couple streets in lower Manhattan (Ave A and lowermost Mott St.) that had been milled, with new asphalt probably not going down for another couple weeks.

This past winter did such a job on #NYC streets that I have been eagerly awaiting resurfacing. Really hoping NYC DOT will do Broadway near my apt as it's been 7.5 years since that bit was last done.

Wow! #Strava has been impressively slow to load in a laptop browser the past day or two. Have they injected even more shitty #JavaScript into their pages?

Skated Tuesday evening despite the big temperature drop because I am sick of WFH and every excuse to GTF out of my apartment is taken. It was indeed cold, but at least the frickin' wind was a crosswind.

This will continue until my 'office' gets actual office space.

Weather is getting weird again and the next week or so could be brrrrr cold. Nevertheless, there were many signs this past week of #NYC #InlineSkating peeps welcoming the onset of spring. There was the earlier than expected NJ Monday Night Skate, and yesterday, it seems various Empire Speed members got together to do loops in #Brookyn #ProspectPark. Also, there were the Strava reports of peeps posting up miles rolling to Red Hook or circling about inner Queens. Woot!

#InlineSkating

We've added three more out-of-town #GroupSkate weekends to the Empire website calendar: Philadelphia, Skate DC, and LA Big Avocado Roll.

Already done are the two Miami events. Houston is next week, then Atlanta kicks off the summer season, followed by DC Skate of the Union, Philly, Portland, Seattle, NYC BAR, Skate DC, and LA.

Still waiting for word on Boston, Chicago, Toronto and San Antonio's dates, but none of those will be earlier than mid August.

Nearly perfect #InlineSkating weather in #NYC Monday evening. So good that the NJ Monday Night Skate across the river unofficially started their 2026 season a month early.

And so many inline speedskaters emerged from their winter dens and started doing loops!

Found something on Daily Beast. Not a well-written news site by any means (ick), but the basic info ties in with something I saw on social 8 hours ago.
