The fundamental problem is that doing water properly is not and never has been profitable. Privatisation was only attractive to investors because there was no obligation to do it properly.
The reality is that investors have now sucked the cash cow dry and there is nothing left for new investors to steal. Re-nationalisation is inevitable, and will be hugely expensive because it will require building all the infrastructure the private investors avoided doing.

The purpose of public transport is to transport the public. Imagine if we had road pricing that required you to buy a discount card, and book slots on the motorway weeks in advance. They'd be riots. The same should be true for trains.
