Human brain cells on a chip learned to play Doom in a week

Neuron-powered computer chips can now be easily programmed to play a first-person shooter game, bringing biological computers a step closer to useful applications

New Scientist
also the screenshot they used is very much not actually doom. they very obviously got an ai to generate a screenshot of doom, which is stupid, because a quadrillion of them exist everywhere, and it failed miserably. look at the picture for five seconds and try not to wince
oops, no its a real screenshot.
turns out theres some super bizzaro doom mod and it actually looks like that.
@Viss It's called "Freedoom"
@Viss Why tho?

@jackryder

.... ssssssssssssscience?

@Viss riiiiiight

Sciiience.

@jackryder im not sure what this is, but it doesnt look like syndicate
@Viss @jackryder Fallout 2 or 1, can't recall perfectly after these years.

@isd_d @Viss
Oh sorry, yes. I believe it's Fallout 1, hinting at the synths.

I just searched for "Brain in a jar" when I was looking.

The article gives "we've grown brains to do the work of..." vibes.

@Viss I don't think it is! Or if it is AI generated, it was done by the company not New Scientist.

https://youtu.be/yRV8fSw6HaE This is the original source that article is based on.

Just before the 30 second mark. You can see where they screenshotted.

@trashpanda oh god, its some bizarro world doom clone thing. thats weird
@Viss looks a lot like Freedoom to me
@Viss Seems like the cells "learned to play doom" in a "barely better than random inputs" sort of way.
@Viss
Don't show this to Hegseth.
@FritzAdalis oh man if he could read he'd get so upset
@Viss Doom really will run on anything
@Viss i don't love that learning to pretend to shoot people is the metric for "a step closer to useful applications"
@Viss Not to speak this into existence, but given existing organoid research, I'm kind of surprised the Worst People You Know haven't picked this up and run with it yet.
@Viss Like, why use a kajillion GPUs when you can just grow a brain in a vat and make it delete your emails?
@theorangetheme yes this will totally work out fine!
@Viss Ron Howard voice: "But it didn't work out fine."
@Viss the cells are probably just trying to figure out how to kill themselves.
@Viss That is the genesis of every #BlackMirror episode right there.
@Viss The brain cells yearn for the doom

@Viss

I can't get over the graphics. Is this a mod? What the hell are we looking at? That is not Doom Guy, the gun looks wrong, what the hell is he shooting?

(also yes black magic with cellular life etc but)

@venya @Viss Freedoom. Great fun, available on the repo.
@Viss is there nothing Doom cannot do?
@Viss Damn, they're better than I am at this game.

@Viss

»bringing biological computers a step closer to useful applications« 😄

Wait… useful for what? 😳

@Viss

this is what the brain cells in question look like under a microscope

@Viss looking- there is literally nothing more satisfying than the sound and feeling of the Doom shotgun, followed by the tinny roars of death when you nail something with said shotgun. It's a distilled endorphin rush without compare. To conclude, those are happy braincells, and this is how we grow zombie soldiers.

(Technically it was Quake soldiers that had their pleasure centres wired to go off when they killed, but close enough).

@BoysenberryCider i hope they learn to rocketjump
@Viss coming to Skynet and Matrix universe, one step at time
@Viss should I feel bad that it took me 2 weeks?
@Viss I the near future: "Just a sec, I need to feed my Torment Nexus."

@Viss
Wait, what.. they program it in Python? So, like what does that even mean? You can program the human brain in Python?

Okay so how can I do this at home? I've got a few great brain automation ideas.

@Viss Now that’s actually AI innovation…

@Viss A bit disappointed: of course, playing Doom is nice, but I was hoping they were running Doom on human brain cells...

(wouldn't be the first time either; I still have the occasional Doom dream, flashing back to the 90s)

@Viss "We are going to glue you to silicon and put you literally in hell. For science."
@SecondUniverse @Viss
That was the thought I had too:/
@Viss for real wtf?? that's too weird

@Viss
Sounds like science fiction...

We are living in parts of the future I was reading about as a teenager

@Viss Doom, it runs on anything! :P

@Viss

Training human brain cells on a chip to play this game evokes certain images...

@johnlogic @Viss
Ahhh memories...
