Does Apple still not have any official accounts on Mastodon (or Bluesky)? Are they really still using X as their primary (only?) text-based social media platform? https://www.macrumors.com/2026/02/26/apple-teases-a-big-week-ahead/
Apple Teases 'A Big Week Ahead' With Announcements Starting Monday

Apple CEO Tim Cook today teased "a big week ahead," with announcements starting Monday. His post included an #AppleLaunch hashtag with a...

@siracusa it’s a shame. There is no reason to have an X account these days
@vmachiel @siracusa It's not a shame, it's 🤮
@siracusa they shouldn’t be there but a surprising number of tech people / developers refuse to leave so it’s not surprising. With their position they could influence people be leaving though.
@fds @siracusa First they should create a presence outside X. Which they did not.
Either they cannot afford handling multiple platforms or they choose to support only X.com.

@al3x They do have the accounts (at least on threads but I. assume it's not active). a one person band manages cross posting so I'm sure they could.

It's definitely a choose to. The kind view is they know Elon will loose his shit and probably start up lawsuits but it is that sort centrist idea of I'm not the bad guy but I’m just trying to keep the peace that allows people like Elon to flourish, imo.

@siracusa It's weird, right? Not just the "X is bad" part, but also being able to run your own server and self-verify, controlling the message end-to-end, protecting privacy, not beholden to another company, etc. Not even as their only outlet, but at least for crossposting. Every tech company that knows about Mastodon should have their own server.
@marcintosh @siracusa As someone who works for a large tech company, I see that Marketing understands Twitter, et.al. and can use the apps/websites. If they're even _aware_ of Mastodon, self-hosting a Mastodon server becomes •A PROJECT,• coordinated with IT for server space, DNS, eng hours. But who's budget does it come out of? For not just install but ongoing maintenance and patching? (That said, there's nothing stopping them from creating an account on The Big Instance to migrate later.)
@marcintosh @siracusa that’s the least Apple thing to do. Plus marketing is not tech, it’s marketing.
@marcintosh you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how social media marketing works. None of what you said means anything in that context. If anything, it’s a deterrent.
@marcintosh @siracusa They go to where the people are. And the people are on X….
Threads edges out X in daily mobile users, new data shows | TechCrunch

Threads’ daily mobile usage has quietly surpassed X as Meta leans on cross-promotion, creator tools, and fast feature rollouts — even as X faces fresh controversies

TechCrunch

@siracusa Really? I did not know that. Last time I checked Threads was US only.

Has that changed?

Also, I use neither X nor Facebook. I really detest Facebook aka Meta, so I wouldn’t use it anyway.

Boggles the mind why people leave X to escape Big Tech but then move to Threads, which is….big tech 🤷‍♂️

@siracusa I spent some time exploring whether there’s a viable indie business helping orgs that broadcast on X get set up on Mastodon and Bluesky. I focused on state and local public agencies. Alas; the typical mid-size progressive city’s transit department doesn’t even know this is something they should consider.

Apple, though? It boggles.

@davepeck @siracusa Stay in touch. I want to spin something up for social or political movements — to the point of being as non-partisan as the ACLU, defending all sides

or support someone else doing it

And then buttress that by doing to online opinions what TLS-PSK does to encryption: build Automated Trust Pyramids for social media accounts, where you can inherit trust score coefficients from other people, or set your own trust scores for people that have earned your trust in real life.

@siracusa I don’t think we should be surprised by this anymore.
@siracusa I suspect it is placating Elon/administration
@siracusa I really wish there was an interview where someone asks Cook directly about this. They’re so big all they need to do is put out press releases and not even be on any platform. Why do they choose to be on X and not kick it out of the App Store. I’d like to see him sweat a little defending this with follow up questions. The cherry on top would be seeing him defend going to that movie premier among other things. but sadly I know these things will never come up if someone interviewed him 😔
@refactoredd @siracusa And risk “access”? Not gonna happen, unfortunately.
@siracusa It is weird that even their Threads account is vacant.
@ichris @siracusa maybe they don’t accept gold trinkets
@ichris @siracusa It’s not, but under Alan Dye’s design direction the text and chrome are all rendered white on white so it doesn’t get in the way of your content.
@ichris @siracusa their Twitter account has always been post-less too if you go to it. Right now it only shows a pinned tweet introducing the latest iPhone.

@siracusa I’m not even certain there is any presence on Facebook /meta/ Threads/ Instagram.

I think like much of corporate America they thought they were one and done for social media presence back in the earlier days of Twitter when ‘Follow us on Twitter’ was the closing statement in every ad and news story.

@siracusa I'm kind of surprised they don't have a Threads account we can access through the platform’s Activity Pub integration.
@siracusa Next payment of the Danegeld: Tim switches Apple to Truth Social and makes it the number one recommendation on the app store.
@siracusa I'm half surprised they don't have a presence on Truth Social what with some of the weird pro-admin stuff they've been doing lately. (I assume they're not anyway, I suspect it'd make headlines if they were.)
@siracusa
I'd be surprised if they were on Mastodon. Sticking with Twitter tracks with their politics and priorities.
@siracusa normies still use X. That’s the reason.
@siracusa I still have wide segments of things I follow that are primarily or only on X - lots of college sports related content, lots of F1 related content, things related to my work, my daughter’s college - some post across platforms but some don’t.
@mpfef98 aren’t there bots for that? I used to know about this … actually there’s one last account I do want to follow, so maybe I should do this myself
@whophd Bots for what? Reposting accounts across to Mastodon and/or BlueSky and/or Threads? Sure for some stuff

@siracusa I mean... you did see the gold trophy thing, right...? They've declared their allegience.
@jwcph @siracusa Must be that “courage” they keep talking about
@siracusa How about we forget about the specific companies and just call it the Fediverse?

@siracusa “Here’s to the crazy ones,” [Dreyfuss] “The misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers — the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently.”

»Current Apple CEO Tim Cook, for instance, keeps a copy of one of the original “Think Different” ads in his office.« — perhaps in his back. Or on the underside of the carpet.

It’s now only about the money, not about having the better product. Or at least being kind to people.

Mac user since 1994, but now switching. A brand that kisses the ring of the autocrat and shits on human rights doesn’t need my money.

@siracusa Yeah. What if Apple started their own Masto instance? Seems like a no-brainer tbh

@FrChazzz @siracusa it should be as big of a deal for companies as setting up a web server

Or maybe, more to the point, an email server — which has a necessary labyrinth of trust hierarchies these days

(and is a fascinate analogue into what we need to do with individual accounts, as a peer-to-peer “social trust” mechanism)

@siracusa They should be on all platforms as a matter of principle with the implicit understanding that none of them matter except the social formerly known as Twitter, and maybe Threads.
@siracusa I suspect they need to play nice with Elon so Tesla keeps the native Apple Music app and keeps working on CarPlay support.
@siracusa sorry but you guys are in a political bubble. X is where everyone is. It’s where all political leaders from all over the world make important statements and argue with each other. I’m not judging your comfy outposts here and on bsky. But if you want to make a global announcement you do it on X
@Beirutspring If you want to make a global announcement, you do it everywhere.
@siracusa come on. Following that logic they should do it as well on truth social and other rando social networks.

@siracusa Is Apple still coasting on what they did 10–15 years ago?
@siracusa Based upon CEO behavior, I'm surprised they don't have an account on Truth Social.
@siracusa yes because that’s where the audience is. Trillion dollar companies don’t often speak into the void
@siracusa given the number of Apple employees and ex-employees with Mastodon accounts I would have hoped to see (a long time ago already) Apple hosting their own instance for their employees or at the very least for their institutional accounts 😞 shame. Same goes for French public radio. I don't understand the hurdle, it makes far more sense for them to be in control of their social media platform in a federated environment rather than relying on the centralized ones of X/Insta/Bluesky. My company doesn't have a social media presence. If we were to have one, it would be through Mastodon with our own instance. (This is something we frequently question and evaluate)
@siracusa Why would they be on Masto or Blue Sky though? Mastodon is only nerds and Blue Sky just a colony of Twitter ex-pats who veered heavily on one side of the political spectrum.
@siracusa at this point the question is why aren’t they on Truth Social
