A priest in the Episcopal Church in Hawai'i, husband, parent, surfer, occasional writer, frequent over-thinker. Forgiven, just like you.

Today we will be discussing the ever-present sign of the cross in Christianity. If you've ever wondered why we Christians make such a big deal out of the instrument upon which Jesus was killed, then this installment is for you.

We go live at 2:30 Hawai'i time (but can be watched whenever after that)

Feels weird to write a sort of obituary for Ted Turner considering that I knew very little of the man. But he was a fixture in the background of my entire life, largely shaping the world I knew. He was also widely criticized in my childhood church for his politics and (lack of?) faith. Which means that he is probably worth celebrating, if I'm being honest.

On May 4th 1945, the BBC broadcast news of the German surrender in Denmark. Danes tore down their Nazi-imposed curfew blackout blinds and lit candles in their windows. Every May 4th since, people mark the liberation by putting a candle in their window at dusk. Every year, someone says: that tradition is dying out. Only old people do it now. Every year, the candles in windows and on balconies in our mixed-use, mixed-generation, mixed-age neighbourhood tell a different story.

Four dead in Ohio

May 4, 1970. Kent State University. Ohio.

Kids saw a moving sale sign and so bugged me about going. Turns out the dude had a TON of various gadgets he was getting rid of. Saw this Drop keyboard and had to have it (being a 90s kid I’m such a sucker for anything Atomic Purple). Got it for a steal (coupled with a bin of Lego he sold my kids). Might have to sub out my beloved Apple G4 Power Mac keyboard…

Yellow Forest (2026)

I sometimes get my ideas from just colors I see somewhere. The colors here come from a cartooney image someone made of a turquoise dog on a yellow background.

My first thought was that this was a dark joke about "going to market" being like "going out for smokes/milk" (and not coming back).

My second thought was: oh. oh no.
