#Trans folx in #Kansas given 1 day to surrender their (now invalid) IDs and driver's licenses to the state. As of tomorrow (Thursday), driving while trans is a class-B misdemeanor ($1000 fine and up to 6 months in jail).

The zero-grace-period execution means driving to turn in your license is a crime.

Oh yeah, this bill also enacted a bathroom bounty program allowing private individuals to sue trans folx for using the restroom.

Kansas Sends Letters To Trans People Demanding The Immediate Surrender Of Drivers Licenses

"The legislature did not include a grace period."

@alice

Really flagrantly disgusting.

@alice WHAT THE FUCK !!!
How can this happen ???

@B_Bird @alice

The market grows faster with fascists regimes, so the market finances and promotes fascists regimes, which in turn promote the toxic masculinity mindset which works because generations failed to teach their sons some decent humanity.
On top it was always more fun to finance militarism instead of education.

@B_Bird @alice fascism promises things it cannot do; so it has to deliver on "the distractions"

There were a lot of German Jews who wouldn't believe the fascists could do what they did. Don't be there when it's too late to leave.

@missqarnstein @B_Bird @alice

If you choose to flee to Canada, just make sure you don't end up in Alberta or the Maritimes.

Our Canadian laws are inclusive, but certain provincial premiers are chipping away at them in any way they can within their jurisdiction, or way out of their jurisdiction, they don't care.

@missqarnstein @B_Bird @alice being able to leave is a privilage trans people are less likely than the general population to have, unfortunately

@OctaviaConAmore @B_Bird @alice well it might be more difficult and inconvenient than somebody with funds and a correct passport.

But it sure beats staying and dying.

Don't be a defeatist and lay down in your grave.

@missqarnstein @B_Bird @alice I'm not being defeatest, I'm being realistic

my ancestors didn't survive genocides and fire/carpet bombing just for me to give up and I never will, but I would be lying if I denied that a large number of us won't be able to leave whether that's due to lack of funds, lack of connections, or disability (something most countries don't look kindly on and aomething trans people disproportionately are  )1

@missqarnstein
I'd argue that what the Nazis did to the Jews was in fact the distraction. Both from the perspective that it gave the government a thing to point at to say they were doing things, but also that they initially claimed they intended to deport them, not kill them. (Where have we heard that before.) The Nazi deathcamps were initially internment camps that gradually became death camps as all other optiones of keeping "undesirables" out of society became infeasible.

Because big empires can't actually deport a small nations worth of people somewhere else without causing an Israel level of mess, kind of like when big empires deported a bunch of people to create Israel.
@[email protected] @alice

@missqarnstein
Anyway the warning is even more dire. A fascist government would literally rather kill all its citizens than to stop being both evil and largely economically innefective.
@alice

@B_Bird @alice A poorly-written bill went to a committee who gutted it and inserted some batshit insanity without following the procedure for allowing any public input. Less-insane politicians suggested amendments to make it less awful and were repeatedly shut down. The bill went to the Governor's desk and she not only vetoed it, but made a public statement on how awful the bill is.

The Republican-led legislature voted to override the veto, and now we're stuck with the law.

@mrgm @B_Bird @alice thank you for explaining this.
@alice
That's barbaric.
From here, in Europe, I'm watching in horror.
(The forces ruining US society are spending crazy money to spread the madness to this side of the pond.
And my son is trans.)

@alice Why is it that conservative forces are always so fixated on other people's genitals?

(Interestingly in more than one way)

@Fettlaus @alice
the genitals are a pretext - it's about a marginalised group that they think can't defend itself or have others step in to defend them.
@calcius @alice @Fettlaus Good luck everyone.

The point and the graphic needs to be said more often.
Thanks!

@introvertcatto @calcius @alice @Fettlaus

@Fettlaus @alice

because they are pervs

@alice Honestly somewhat surprised the bill doesn't mandate wearing a marker on an armband when out in public. I guess that's still just a little too on the nose for them.
@Fruan @alice that would conflict with "We can always tell". Not that logical consistency is always a requirement with this lot, I'll admit.

@alice

It's weird seeing all the far right "15 minute city" conspiracy theories (which claim alternatives to cars restrict people's freedom) and now the far right is specifically using cars to restrict people's freedoms.

It's like yet another accusation being a confession. All the conspiratorial lies they told about public transport being an instrument of control, they are now actually doing themselves with cars.

@FediThing @alice every time they acuse some group of something it is a self report on their own intentions it seems.
@FediThing This is more about the DL as personal ID, which is ubiquitous in the US. We use our DLs as ID all the time -- liquor store, club, bank, etc. This is about shaming and humiliating a disfavoured group, and making just living as hard as possible. And, ultimately, discouraging trans people from voting, where ID is also required.
@wesdym @FediThing Ah shit yeah, as a European I had actually forgotten this is your baseline ID as well. That makes it even worse and I would not have thought they could make it worse.
MSN

@ruari Yep. It's about disempowering and erasing disfavoured people.

@alice such a stupid thing to fixate into. What have trans people done to them? What economical benefit is in for... Anyone?

There are a million things that would be much much more useful economically than alienating a part of the population from using your services.

If USA wants to be a capitalist oligarchy, USA should correctly corrupt itself.

@Goodlucksil @alice Every fascist regime needs an "out group", a group of people to rally against, to present as enemies to keep their support base occupied.

@Goodlucksil the architects of this sort of thinking don't actually care about trans people one way or the other. This is a classic wedge issue just like abortion has been.

The solution to this problem, like every other mind-bending problem in the United States, starts with campaign finance reform. The path from there is unfortunately long and fraught with difficulties.

@alice

@Goodlucksil @alice what have trans people done? upended their entire worldview, shattered their sense of identity, and called to question everything they thought they knew about how things work... by merely existing
@alice
Dorothy flees back to Oz
@alice Sadly, yes. All of the "WE DON'T WANT THIS" from the constituents falls on deaf ears for the corrupt legislature. I'm hoping things get less awful here after mid-terms, but there's a LOT of damage the jackasses have caused in the last several years that needs to be undone. In the meantime, I'd recommend anyone thinking of moving to Kansas to stay away. The land is beautiful and the people are friendly, but the laws here are fucked.

@alice

My European driving licence has an entry about which vehicles I'm allowed to drive. And if I would be required to wear glasses.

Nothing about my sex.

Even though some people (almost always men) express their feelings of inferiority by choosing an overpowered vehicle - nobody (at least somehow sane) drives it with their genitalia.

These law makers in Kansas are batshit crazy. My sympathy to all who are affected.

@wvs @alice

The uk license has gender encoded into the license number. It may well be hidden in the EU one as well. They do like their data.

@wvs @alice In the UK there's no separate field for it but it's encoded in the driver number :(
@alice
Just fuck these people.
(I know, nobody actually wants to.)
@JSteven @alice no fair making me spew coffee at this hour!!
@alice
Same shit, different country!
@alice This is wrong and ridiculous and I hate everything about it.

@alice

<del>"America's Heartland"</del>
<add>"America's Hateland"</add>

@alice Cis people need to fucking well read this and do something.
@alice It would be interesting to see if trans people would sue Kansas for not letting them be people, or some such thing. It would be nice to have SCOTUS reverse the decision, and then fine the hell out of the Kansas government.
@weirdone @alice I can’t understand how this will work because in eg. a traffic stop the cop will see a completely different person to that in the ID. Surely the whole purpose of ID is to prove you are who you say you are and if your ID says you’re a man and you look like a woman (or vice versa), it no longer serves any practical purpose. If you are a trans man or a trans woman, then your ID should reflect that, otherwise it’s completely useless.

@peterbrown

True enough.

I can imagine that some people's licenses may be coming up for renewal, and they want to wait for that to happen before getting a new license. If it's more than a year before renewal, I suppose they could get the license changed and renewed at the same time, paying a pro-rated amount to cover whatever time is left on the current license, plus the cost for the new one. 🤷‍♂️

Just an idea.

@alice

@weirdone @peterbrown @alice
Their licenses were invalidated today with no grace period. Any trans person with a KS license who drives today who has changed their gender on their license to their real gender would be driving illegally. They’re being forced to change it back to their ASAB and being given no time to do so, in order to inflict as much pain as possible. The Kansas legislature is filled with evil people.
@weirdone Under this law, any DL that has a gender marker different from your birth certificate becomes invalid TODAY. Use of it incurs a fine, and can also include jail time. It also incurs an automatic 90-day suspension, and if you violate that, a mandatory minimum 5 days in jail.
@peterbrown @weirdone @alice This isn't about utility. If it were they'd be combatting their piss poor public health, education system, homelessness, poverty, etc etc. This is about targetting a group of people and saying you have the solution to 'make them go away'. I agree though, it kind of makes the ID useless.
@peterbrown Right. But that's not its purpose. Its purpose is to shame and humiliate trans people and discourage them from being themselves anytime they're not in the privacy of their home. It's also meant to discourage voting by people they don't like.
@weirdone It's very hard to sue govt for anything, ever, and this is an issue very much in legal play in the US right now. Also, our high court is dominated by conservative justices who mostly agree with whatever the regime wants, and the regime hates trans people. So I would bet against that.
@wesdym Yeah. That's what Kansas *hopes* they do. With enough people joining a class-action lawsuit, the court would have to at least hear them out.
@weirdone @alice I never fully trusted the federal government to protect trans rights, but I sure as hell don't right now
@alice ....and yet European countries still (so far as I understand it) refuse asylum claims on the basis that "The USA is a Safe Country".
@swaldman @alice I honestly don't get why we still list the US as "safe to travel" in the travel advisories either.
@phl @alice I've always assumed it's because it would be diplomatically awkward to do otherwise.
