#Trans folx in #Kansas given 1 day to surrender their (now invalid) IDs and driver's licenses to the state. As of tomorrow (Thursday), driving while trans is a class-B misdemeanor ($1000 fine and up to 6 months in jail).

The zero-grace-period execution means driving to turn in your license is a crime.

Oh yeah, this bill also enacted a bathroom bounty program allowing private individuals to sue trans folx for using the restroom.

"The legislature did not include a grace period."

@alice WHAT THE FUCK !!!
How can this happen ???

@B_Bird @alice

The market grows faster with fascists regimes, so the market finances and promotes fascists regimes, which in turn promote the toxic masculinity mindset which works because generations failed to teach their sons some decent humanity.
On top it was always more fun to finance militarism instead of education.

@B_Bird @alice fascism promises things it cannot do; so it has to deliver on "the distractions"

There were a lot of German Jews who wouldn't believe the fascists could do what they did. Don't be there when it's too late to leave.

@missqarnstein @B_Bird @alice

If you choose to flee to Canada, just make sure you don't end up in Alberta or the Maritimes.

Our Canadian laws are inclusive, but certain provincial premiers are chipping away at them in any way they can within their jurisdiction, or way out of their jurisdiction, they don't care.

@missqarnstein @B_Bird @alice being able to leave is a privilage trans people are less likely than the general population to have, unfortunately

@OctaviaConAmore @B_Bird @alice well it might be more difficult and inconvenient than somebody with funds and a correct passport.

But it sure beats staying and dying.

Don't be a defeatist and lay down in your grave.

@missqarnstein @B_Bird @alice I'm not being defeatest, I'm being realistic

my ancestors didn't survive genocides and fire/carpet bombing just for me to give up and I never will, but I would be lying if I denied that a large number of us won't be able to leave whether that's due to lack of funds, lack of connections, or disability (something most countries don't look kindly on and aomething trans people disproportionately are  )1

@missqarnstein
I'd argue that what the Nazis did to the Jews was in fact the distraction. Both from the perspective that it gave the government a thing to point at to say they were doing things, but also that they initially claimed they intended to deport them, not kill them. (Where have we heard that before.) The Nazi deathcamps were initially internment camps that gradually became death camps as all other optiones of keeping "undesirables" out of society became infeasible.

Because big empires can't actually deport a small nations worth of people somewhere else without causing an Israel level of mess, kind of like when big empires deported a bunch of people to create Israel.

@missqarnstein
Anyway the warning is even more dire. A fascist government would literally rather kill all its citizens than to stop being both evil and largely economically innefective.
@alice

@B_Bird @alice A poorly-written bill went to a committee who gutted it and inserted some batshit insanity without following the procedure for allowing any public input. Less-insane politicians suggested amendments to make it less awful and were repeatedly shut down. The bill went to the Governor's desk and she not only vetoed it, but made a public statement on how awful the bill is.

The Republican-led legislature voted to override the veto, and now we're stuck with the law.

@mrgm @B_Bird @alice thank you for explaining this.
