Is anyone using Mastodon as their primary social media and is it working for you?
@LianaBrooks Yes and yes. I primarily post here - rarely on FB (yes, I still have it because my family and the Deaf community still use it). I love the interaction here - it’s far more uplifting and educational than any other social media I’ve used.
@LianaBrooks yes, and it suits my needs perfectly. Granted I mostly lurk, but also have convos.
@LianaBrooks Yes, and yes.
Recently had to start (very reluctantly) using Facebook again in an extremely limited way to get news from art group I'm involved with.
But all my online life is here on Mastodon.

@LianaBrooks

I use it as my primary social media, but can't say that its working for me. Most of the time I just post what other people say, but I dont feel like there are many communities on here except for a self-selecting few

@Condorito I really hate to hear that, Condorito. Maybe it's time for a new "introduction" post for us all to share? No matter what you're looking for, we can probably get you closer to finding your people. 🫂
@LianaBrooks

@Condorito @LianaBrooks
Im still getting into it but this is where I'm at. Many of the topics I used to engage with on X are non existent or limited to bots reposting X or substack content. Im not a programmer which seems to be a large swath of content I see rn.

Still enjoying the type of stuff I see enough to keep me here and hopeful it continues to grow.

@LittlePolarBear @Condorito @LianaBrooks I barely see any coding stuff. Just enough to remind me it exists. You just need to find your people
@Condorito I'm sorry to hear that. Did you try following hashtags?
@LianaBrooks
@LianaBrooks yes^2
Be it noted that keeping in touch with family is not a function of social media for me.
@LianaBrooks yes to both. i left fb 15 years ago, reddit and twitter in 2022. this is the only place i've been since and it's easily my favorite, going all the way back to newsgroups, IRC, forums, friendster, and myspace.
@LianaBrooks
It’s my only social media. I would never go back, ever.
@LianaBrooks yup, and definitely. I haven't been able to convince anyone from FB to come over, but I've found plenty of cool folks anyway.
@Sablebadger @LianaBrooks yeah, this… the folk I would have known on fb before that are here, were here before me. So it’s growing new connections and that’s cool.
@LianaBrooks yes on both counts for me.

@LianaBrooks

yes! I left twitter many years ago (pre-covid), then kicked fb I think three years ago, & instagram last year.

couldn't stand every third post I was seeing being an ad or "promoted." I would meet up with friends & acquaintances and realized none of their posts had been shown to me & I felt out of the loop DESPITE being connected. no thanks. love it here 💜

@LianaBrooks I think I spend more time on my three #Mastodon servers than I spend on others.Not actually counting though.
@RFPatterson Facinating... see, the servers bit is what trips me up. I don't like bouncing between them. But you've found a way to make it work?
@LianaBrooks On my local nz one, I follow the other two. So if I post to one of the others (because of different audience) and think it also worthwhile locally I go back to the nz one and boost here too.
@LianaBrooks Yes, although I also spend time on BlueSky. It's been working fine; I haven't noticed any technical issues recently.
@LianaBrooks @robyn yes and yes :) since day 1
@LianaBrooks I do Mastodon and LinkedIn (only work related) but spend a lot more time here, so would call it "primary" and very much working for me.

@LianaBrooks

I am currently, and I like it fine at the moment.

@LianaBrooks yes and very yes

I love all of it, and I learned a lot from the communities that welcomed me.
Best feature: have separate pseudonym accounts on different servers, partitioning professional life from friends from activism from private life from exploratory and intellectual curiosity. Tusky client allows jumping from one account to the other as easy as switching timelines.

With my accounts I mostly read and boost, with minor interactions, but I get news, super interesting commentary, and links to amazing blog posts.

I have read that the Fediverse hasn't been as welcoming or not even safe for many non-(white-cis-male) people, I do my best to not (involuntarily) add to the problem, and actually help when I can. All good-manners I learnt here.

@LianaBrooks Mastodon is my one and only social media. I had pretty much abandoned social media entirely for a few years before finding and joining Mastodon. It is without a doubt the best experience I've ever had on any social media platform.

Mastodon is not a rage factory as all the other social media platforms were...it is a home.

(Don't get me wrong, there's PLENTY of rage at the news articles being shared...but not about or because of the platform itself.)

@LianaBrooks yeah. I like recognizing people and knowing a little about their lives. Other platforms are on the busy side for me.

@LianaBrooks after getting kicked off Facebook more than a week ago I have returned to Mastodon.

I feel that I making new connections and friends but it is a different community to that which I had on Fb. One reason is that my real life friends are not here.

I want to use Mastodon as a micro-blogging platform and use as a base for my sharing and spread a link to my daily Masto blogging distributed by email.

@LianaBrooks yep, and it works really well for me.

@LianaBrooks

Yes.

But then all I want is to chat with some people I get along with

@LianaBrooks
Yes and yes.
Our Mastodon experience is what we make it. With the setting available to us we can tailor our experience to what we want it to be. That's what makes it the perfect SM for me.
@LianaBrooks It's my only social media & yes
working great! it's awesome to share interests with people on the fediverse. it really feels like home.

left twitter ages ago and never found anything else that stuck. just restarted my instance recently, and i'm really enjoying it ❤️

@LianaBrooks It's been my primary social media for three years now and it's been very refreshing.
@LianaBrooks Yes and yes. I have two fediverse accounts and no other social media. However, I do follow some bluesky people using the fediverse bridge.
@LianaBrooks yes and of course. there is zero corporate toxicity, it is pure human activity. so it is impossible not to enjoy.

@LianaBrooks Yes, it is and it is working for me.

You do however have to curate the accounts you follow and choose hashtags to follow. There is no algorithm on the #fediverse, you are the algorithm.

Reply to posts and boost posts by others that you find interesting and find relevant for other people who follow you. That is how you can make it work for yourself and others.

@alterelefant @LianaBrooks same. It is my ONLY social media at this point.
