First talk today at the Social Web Devroom we have @pfefferle talking about the state of WordPress's fediverse integration
#FOSDEM #ActivityPub #fedidev
Excited to see WordPress still using the @FediverseSymbol throughout the interface
Next up is @andypiper and @haubles talking about @Mastodon's vision
@andypiper: "mastodon is part of a movement" "it is part of the fediverse"

@haubles just dropped the massive news that Mastodon is going to be changing the default signup flow on mobile apps to choose an instance thats geographically close to you instead of choosing mastodon.social by default!

UPDATE: their official announcement here: https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/115989801184595302

the internet went down and then I went to get a coffee with @douginamug! Just got back and caught the end of @bjoernsta's talk about https://savesocial.eu

Networks For Democracy.

And now @cypherhippie has a lightning talk about bringing #DIDs to the fediverse
A slide of a slide of @arcalinea talking about using DIDs for ATProto
A slide of @snarfed.org agreeing with the premise of bringing DIDs to the fediverse
Core Assumptions
1) "Communities must be in control"
2) "Nobody shall be locked-in"
3) "There is NO FREE marketplace of ideas."
Next we have @django presenting some ideas about moving the ActivityPub API C2S forward
A quote from @Gargron about how C2S was seriously lacking
Oh hell yeah looks like @django used my https://iconography.fediverse.info for their slides!
After a short break we have @raffomania is presenting a new federated bookmark sharing software called 'ties'
https://github.com/raffomania/ties
The philosophy of 'ties'
Oh @raffomania wants to do full text search of an archived version of websites from 'ties'
@samvie up next with a talk about digital sovereignty!
all the orgs that signed the "open networks and democratic public spheres" alience
Fedimedia Italia presenting their association!
Who is Fedimedia Italia:
Wow Fedimedia Italia has *a lot* of instances
Oh cool and also @raccoonforfriendicaapp and #Flohra are also under their umbrella

@tsyesika and @cwebber up next talking about what's next for the fediverse!

https://stream.fosdem.org/h2215.m3u8

The fediverse is not done!
@tsyesika is talking about issues with naming and fishing and has a slide up with a fake @Gargron account
They are talking about what the fediverse would look like if we were using more generic servers
@FediVariety up next about getting public agencies to use the fediverse
Taking a tiny break to get some fresh air and then ruin the freshness with a cigarette and then back to my regularly scheduled programming. @andypiper has awarded me "official love blog status" so now my duty has peerpressure!
Had a longer break then I meant to opps!
@liaizon @tsyesika @Gargron this is what rel=me integration is for.
@KevinMarks @tsyesika that doesn't help in this case unless that information is used and visualized in places like name autocomplete and weighting of search results. Also it requires everyone to have a website or place that they own which is only the case for tech and larger personalities
@liaizon @tsyesika I've had 2 impersonators on mastodon.social in the last month, so prioritising accounts with bidirectional rel=me links in autocomplete would help.
@liaizon I can see an open source solution already exist for each issue, why groups don't talk each other's?
@uriel there isnt an implementation of any protocol that has all these properties, which is one reason why Christine has been working on Spritely Goblins this whole time

@liaizon There are—and more than one. Never heard of RetroShare? Instead of declarative sentences like "there is no," why not say "I am not aware of any"?

Yet you've answered my question: you don't exchange knowledge because you think you know everything.

@uriel this is a talk about these properties *for* the fediverse. Retroshare is not being made for global public communication or many of the things that we use the fediverse for. I don't think Retroshare would want people to try to shoehorn the project into use for the sorts of things that Spritely is being built for

@liaizon

Not quite.

ActivityPub doesn’t prescribe a specific transport layer for delivering its activities. In practice, most deployments use HTTPS today, but in principle the transport could be swapped for something else—anything from SIP to SMTP to libp2p.

So there would be no inherent obstacle if an implementation chose to use Bitmessage (the protocol behind retroshare) as its transport.

You’re not seeing many alternatives largely because you’re assuming that what you haven’t encountered simply doesn’t exist.

@liaizon as I posted already publicly I'm bothered by the fact they went for AI slop rather than pulling the actual memes, in a community where this is very frowned upon
@lucent yeah I noticed that in their slides too :(

diorama
@liaizon Not all of them are instances; we actually have “only” 18 instances.

@liaizon

But can we be sure that all the softwares and orgs mentioned there will protect user data to the max?

@liaizon Having a small world moment recognizing @raffomania from my time in Hamburg, where we had some overlapping years at the university's computer science campus and apparently exchanged a couple of emails. Not sure if we ever met face to face. Cool project! 🙂
@julian @liaizon oh wow, when you followed me recently your name seemed familiar! I’ll have to check out your fediverse projects :)

@raffomania Likewise! 😀 I'm up to my neck in teaching and organizational work for the day job this winter, but I'm hoping to make progress on @encyclia again in the warmer months.

@liaizon

@julian Good luck! I'm juggling development on ties with the dayjob too, the context switches are challenging, but it's still rewarding :)
@liaizon @raffomania Oh, would totally love this when it requires a little less tech know how.
@wess @liaizon maybe someday ties will be supported by the likes of coolify or pikapods so it’s easy to have your own instance :)

@raffomania @liaizon I'm also not opposed to learning how to do it if there's some good walkthroughs for less techie folks. I've dabbled a little in hosting (mostly websites) but love to learn more when I can. I like the idea of self-hosting. I was a LONG-TIME delicious user and lost all those links when the service went away.

I am also unfamiliar with coolify or pikapods so will check that out.

@wess @liaizon Setting up a homelab / self-hosting things is a great adventure. The self-hosting community on here, lemmy and reddit is super active, and there are lots of resources. To get started, I'd recommend setting up something in a local network (e.g. behind your router at home) so you can learn in peace without worrying about security.
@raffomania @liaizon Awesome! Thanks for the suggestion.
@liaizon as someone that's been cooperating with @django pretty heavily in the past months I feel a bit overlooked...
@mariusor I apologize, this visual slide was a last minute addition and couldn’t find the icon, but I did mention FedBox!
@mariusor the irony here is that aside from FebBox, I’ve only tested my app with Pleroma, Friendica and Bonfire the others likely have no oauth capabilities!
@mariusor fyi, here is my interop tracking page https://github.com/mediaformat/c2s

@django :D sorry, I realize that in writing that can sound a little petulant but I was being mock upset. :D

FedBOX doesn't have a logo yet... but soon there will be one. Maybe next year. :)

@liaizon Indeed, that’s me.
@liaizon "barebones" i'll grant, but the idea of "no notifications" is funny because the inbox is all notifications. a separate "home feed" would ideally be an, uh... separate feed. in many cases you can construct one based on the notifications you receive in your inbox! that doesn't seem to be what mastodon is going for, though, so it's no wonder they weren't keen on using it (i.e. different goals)
@liaizon what is needed for a social platform is an entire suite of apis, not just one endpoint.

@liaizon and @Gargron is wrong... I'd say "as usually" but that'd just be mean.

Email clients have been built into rich messaging platforms despite resting on a much more barebones base vocabulary in comparison to ActivityStreams.

What Gagron did was show a severe lack of imagination, and thusly condemn a passable interface to an obscurity that some of us have been trying to overcome ever since...

@liaizon

4) numbered lists on the slides must not be centered 😄

@liaizon
As a comms guy, I wanna see #3 workshopped into a positive statement.
@jaystephens there IS an expensive market place of ideas?

@liaizon
OK I snrk-lol'd 🙂

Being serious for a moment, a short, pithy boiling down of
"The exchange of ideas functions well only when shared norms are agreed and enforced in the public square"
