A big part of open source maintainers getting fried is something I've said about running eg forums/IRC servers/fed instances: These are things that used to be part of people's jobs. Tridge originally developed rsync as part of his phd thesis. X came out of MIT's Project Athena. Bill Joy developed vi as a grad student working at CSRG. Lone weirdos doing a thing out of their basement with no support was never the fucking norm because it is unsustainable for most people!
