We Found More Than 40 Cases of Immigration Agents Using Banned Chokeholds and Other Moves That Can Cut Off Breathing

Civilians have had apparent seizures. One had his eyes roll back. Another had ribs broken. “I felt like I was going to pass out and die,” said a 16-year-old citizen put in a chokehold. The government won’t say if any agents have been punished.

ProPublica showed former #police & #immigration officials videos of incidents. They said agents are out of control. One said it’s “the kind of action which should get you fired.”

There is a federal ban on #chokeholds & similar tactics. But there is no sign of punishment for officers who’ve used them.

An agent in TX put a teenage citizen into a #chokehold, wrapping his arm around the boy’s neck, choking him so hard that his neck had red welts hours later. A black-masked agent in CA pressed his knee into a woman’s neck while she was handcuffed; she then appeared to pass out. An agent in MA jabbed his finger & thumb into the neck & arteries of a young father who refused to be separated from his wife & 1-year-old daughter. The man’s eyes rolled back in his head & he started convulsing.

After #GeorgeFloyd’s #murder by a #police officer 6 years ago in #Minneapolis — less than a mile from where an #ICE agent shot & killed #ReneeNicoleGood last week — police departments & federal agencies banned #chokeholds & other moves that can restrict breathing or blood flow.

But those tactics are back, now at the hands of agents conducting #Trump’s mass deportation campaign.
