Geoffrey Alpert, a professor of criminology & criminal justice at University of South Carolina, said a thorough investigation is needed into the reason for using a high level of force in that situation.

“I don’t know of any projectile where you train to shoot at that close range,” Alpert said.

Washington, a #CivilRights lawyer, said his client could have been killed.

“Any officers with just the most basic training would know you don’t shoot someone ever in the face with this, but let alone at point-blank range, & that’s because it is a lethal weapon when used like that, & it very nearly was,” Washington said.

Demonstrator injured by projectile at Southern California protest

A demonstrator was hit in the face with a projectile fired by a federal officer at close range during a protest in Southern California. The protester was bloodied and with serious injuries, according to video and fellow protesters during a Tuesday news conference. The incident occurred during a Friday protest in Santa Ana over the shooting death of Renee Good in Minneapolis by a federal agent. Video shows the officer firing at the demonstrator, who grabbed his face and fell to the ground. In a statement read aloud by a friend, the demonstrator said he lost vision in one eye. Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin says two officers were injured.

A U.S. judge has ruled federal officers in a Minneapolis-area immigration operation can’t detain or tear gas peaceful protesters who aren’t obstructing authorities, including when these people are observing the agents. U.S. District Judge Kate Menendez ruled Friday in a case filed in December on behalf of six Minnesota activists. Thousands of people have been observing the activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol officers enforcing the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area since early December. Government attorneys have argued the officers have been acting within their legal authority to enforce immigration laws and protect themselves.

A Facebook Live video [boosted before 🧵] reviewed by WaPo includes people at the house telling 911 dispatchers that the #shooting happened as the men closed the door at the residence. Another video includes Sosa-Celis mentioning some sort of scuffle before any gunshots were fired, but he does not specify whether that struggle happened at the door or in the street.
