Yesterday was my last day in Minneapolis and I spent it running around the city visiting the places I wanted to go. There is another, younger, scrappier non profit with neon called CAFAC - Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center - and it is right at George Floyd Square.
Seeing the square, and it's memorial was powerful. It seems there are daily events at the gas station- now changed into "People's way" with a campfire in the middle of the pumps and a brass band meeting up there along with about 50 other folks. 5 wood or Steel fists have been placed in the square, and the four intersections surrounding it. The spots of the incident, have been memorialized.
CAFAC has metal casting classes- and is public arts and activism oriented. Seems like they are ready (and are currently) making a very heavy, and long lasting iron, steel or bronze mark.
Their neon shop used all lead glass (out of production for 20 years. Funky- but exciting!
