Brussels knifes privacy to feed the AI boom

Draft proposals obtained by POLITICO show EU is breaking sacred privacy regime to placate industry.

Civil society decries digital rights ‘rollback' as European Commission pushes data protection changes

A coalition of 127 civil society groups and trade unions is pushing back on the European Commission’s reported changes to laws protecting citizens' data privacy and regulating how artificial intelligence can harness personal information.

The EU is set to announce on Wednesday it has given in to US lobbying and will allow firms to train AI on customer data, amongst other things. https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20251115-eu-bows-to-pressure-on-loosening-ai-privacy-rules
EU bows to pressure on loosening AI, privacy rules

The European Union is set next week to kickstart a rollback of landmark rules on artificial intelligence and data protection that face powerful pushback on both sides of the Atlantic.

@GossiTheDog Who will be fined for the inevitable data breach when the guardrails don't work?

@GossiTheDog We seem to be attempting to speedrun the point where it honestly doesn't matter if 'AI' does anything at all, thanks to the amount of impunity you get if you claim that it's super important that you build it before someone else does.

Seriously, though, whoever looked at the teetering pile of copyright infringement and scraping to the point of DDoS and was like "yeah, that looks privacy-compatible" will deserve their spot in one of the special hells.

@GossiTheDog finally, there's going to be no reason anymore to be jealous of EU citizens.

@GossiTheDog

@bonaventuresoft

It's as if "democratically elected" governments are more under corporate control than expressing "the will of the people".

Are periodic elections of professional politicians who need a lot of money to get elected, and are free to go back on their campaign "promises" once elected, by people subject to constant persuasion by corporate media, not the guarantee of democracy we have been told they are?

@GossiTheDog last haven of safety caving in? ffs

@GossiTheDog

This cannot be allowed to happen. I don't know how exactly, but we will stop this.

@GossiTheDog this sucks, royally. I am a US citizen and I consider this as magnificent, almost deity level, suckage. Bad enough that they're stealing our data, almost daily, now they're going to steal the data of UK citizens as well. And they'll make it legal as well, because our governments are betraying our interests.
@GossiTheDog the answer is always: money
@moritzdietz @GossiTheDog No, the specific answer (which I'm finding is the answer to everything these days) is "rich people not paying their taxes". Because once you let them get away with that social duty, they just want more and more and more and more – and we've already demonstrated that the rules don't apply to them.
@GossiTheDog Brussels has had a money problem for ages now, not to mention it lacks a government so corpos run wild.
@keremanjaro @GossiTheDog This is "Brussels" as in "The European Commission" (I hate that use of "Brussels" tbh), it has nothing to do (politically or in terms of budget) with Brussels the Belgian Region?

@yhancik @GossiTheDog ah. I did not expect that kind of usage. Yeah in that case you have a good point.

Then again, makes me wonder why they suddenly bit the bullet on this one.

@keremanjaro @GossiTheDog they're not known to consistently offer resistance to lobbying. It's a wonder GDPR actually happened.

And we know there definitely is lobbying from the tech industry on easing EU regulations 👇

@GossiTheDog

If we’re lucky, the bubble will burst before this passes and no one will want to be seen as making concessions to the people who broke the world’s economy.

@GossiTheDog

EU has sold out to the fascists and billionaires now as well. There is no one else on the side of good anymore ☹️

@GossiTheDog Seems like even if/when the bubble pops, AI will have expanded tech's control in ways that will have made the grift fully worth it.

They've successfully scrubbed out consent, privacy, and the notion of "trojan horses" to such an extent that it will take ages to claw back any semblence of the individual as a person.

@GossiTheDog We barely managed to stop ChatControl, which would have been incredibly invasive to everyone. This will have much less visible consequences, and I can't imagine too many people being willing to protest this ... Apathy will beat privacy😞
@elricofmelnibone @GossiTheDog Can't yet find any great international source, but it looks like this ship did sail yesterday and nobody noticed? Could not yet verify that it passed but read that it did. https://tarnkappe.info/artikel/netzpolitik/erweiterte-chatkontrolle-soll-heute-mit-verzicht-auf-anonymitaet-beschlossen-werden-322855.html

TARNKAPPE.INFO
@GossiTheDog "Draft proposal" - tell me how to oppose it, instead of doom-posting.
@GossiTheDog "Documents seen by POLITICO show that Estonia, France, Austria and Slovenia are firmly against any rewrite of the General Data Protection Regulation. Germany — usually seen as one of the most privacy-minded countries — on the other hand is pushing for big changes to help AI."
@GossiTheDog It's annoying that we have to fight over it time and time again. However, given who is against it, the proposal is likely to be stopped. Just as was the case with Chat Control.

@GossiTheDog #MarketingisNOTalegitimateInterest need I say more besides
#BanOnlineAdvertizing

out spite. Make them go back to print media.

yes I see the data hunger of LLMs rooted in the advertisement mafia.

@GossiTheDog
The bubble bursting right about now would be very convenient
@GossiTheDog
What the fucking hell!? What is being called "AI" is rubbish, unworthy of any deference or concessions. Don't believe the hype. What happened to the EU's ethics and morals? Screw the AI companies!

@GossiTheDog I called this before Trump was elected, that they're going to double down on getting rid of regulation and granting US tech giants free access to EU data. They're just going to get more hawkish on this and blackmail with NATO participation and security, if EU doesn't comply to their wants.

Finland is already planning to move election data to AWS. I want to get off this ride.

@GossiTheDog
This sucks. We have a (relatively) working multi party system which, alas, is spoiled by low voter turnout throughout the EU. I guess you get what you didn't vote for.
@GossiTheDog Indeed and the big guys in the USA get richer because they can use our privacy - thank you #UVDL
@GossiTheDog , d'aucune utilité technique, une excuse fermentée par des pirates informatiques.
@GossiTheDog AI is a fascist tech so it's sad to see them yield to it.
@GossiTheDog Me cago en la puta mierda que llaman IA y en los putos millonarios.

@GossiTheDog

Well that didn't take long.

@GossiTheDog
Fuck no! There should be no exceptions to GDPR. My data, my privacy. If anything there should be stiffer penalties for feeding any personal information into AI systems given that the security of said data is then unknown as you can't be certain what garbage an LLM is going to spit out. They can fuck right off and then fuck off some more

@GossiTheDog

The sound you hear won't be champagne corks. So...what do you plan to wear for the next, worldwide #GreatDePrAIssion ?

@GossiTheDog I don't know how far AI is going, but wouldn't it be smart to use it to your advantage?
@GossiTheDog @briankrebs This is so backwards. It would be devastating for human rights. We must stop this.
@Em0nM4stodon @GossiTheDog So the claim is that it will all be anonymized data is complete bollocks. Just like the mobile ad companies say oh this mobile location data is anonymized, and then you have this enormously profitable industry of brokers who are piecing all the marketing industry data points together to build detailed profiles on people.
@briankrebs @Em0nM4stodon @GossiTheDog

Sometimes I need to explain this to family for example. Always ask: when they know everything about a person except for his name, would you call it "private" ...?
@GossiTheDog The EU, a wonderful Trojan Horse for tax dodging, surveillance and undermining social security. Oh and let's not forget that its the perfect tool for German Car makers to sabotage legislation.

@GossiTheDog

Are they out of their mind?

"Draft changes would create new exceptions for AI companies that would allow them to legally process special categories of data (like a person’s religious or political beliefs, ethnicity or health data) to train and operate their tech. The Commission is also planning to reframe the definition of such special category data, which are afforded extra protections under the privacy rules. "

@GossiTheDog If you steal at scale, it's all good.
@GossiTheDog Oh ffs... It never ends, does it?
@GossiTheDog
Two words: Butlerian Jihad
Just saying its time…

@GossiTheDog

the bribed have realised the bubble is close to bursting and want their cash bags before it does.
