do I understand why even people who aren’t prone to conspiracy theories might think so? yes

governments run on trust. trust takes a long time to build and can be lost in a heartbeat – and USians have always had a strong thread of distrust of (esp. federal) government running through their culture (I generally describe their legal system as “50 squirrels in a trench coat”)

the current & former Trump administrations (and the entire Republican party that enables them) have actively taken a wrecking ball to any institutions that have (had) any amount of independent authority or bipartisan support, so trust in government is at an all time low

yes, they’re reaping what they sow (“haha! gotcha!” etc. 🙄) but also, they don’t care because they actively want a public that no longer trusts things like scientific expertise, independent evidence, or anything other than whatever the regime’s propaganda channels spew out in their firehose of [mis|dis]information du jour 💁‍♀️
