Everyone’s on their Hand386 so I dusted off my PocketChip and look at that, I’m running System 7.5.3 thanks to Mini VMac! It’s delightfully quick!

Could I build Mini VMac for Pocket Chip myself to include the LocalTalk over UDP option?? How hard could it be?! 🤪

After making some really sketchy repository changes and doing an incantation, I got some X11 sources installed and Mini VMac actually compiled without issue!

And look! It’s speaking AppleTalk (UDP) on my network!! Hahaha this is so weird to me. Should I print something to my AppleTalk ImageWriter II from my handheld? 😅

After a few tries I was able to fully print from Quark XPress to the ImageWriter II over #AppleTalk with the #AirTalk from the #PocketChip! It wasn’t quick but it worked!

How about browsing the ✨ Internet ✨ on the emulated Mac? 😅

Using MacIPGW here for MacIP. Writing up a blog post about all of this later today!

New blog post: Macintosh Emulation and Printing using Mini VMac on a PocketCHIP

In this post I go over how I got Mini VMac compiled on the PocketCHIP with LocalTalk options enabled. I also go over how I printed to a real ImageWriter II as well as browsed the web with Netscape 2.0!

Thanks in advance for a boost!

Ha you thought I was done with this silly PocketCHIP? 😅 Let’s run SoftPC!

Minesweeper because solitaire didn’t place the cards right (probably because of the weird screen size?)

Picking up this project from two years ago, I finally printed a bezel and key set for my PocketCHIP. I printed it with Polar Retro Platinum and used waterslide decals for the key tops and badge with Univers 57 font.

Update: I collected the models and the art for the waterslide decals in one place:

Boot the emulated Mac on the PocketCHIP.. from Floppy?! Sure, why not! 🙃

@paulrickards this is getting out of hand, i love it. See, you sharpened all the pencil and now it’s a new one!!!
@paulrickards this whole thread inspired me to finally persist in unbricking (and re-bricking, several times) my own Pocketchip. Fun!! I need to print this case and keys; they look fantastic!
@j Fantastic! Glad to hear it was an inspiration. The keyboard does give it a more polished feel. And it's so much easier to locate keys. Look forward to seeing yours when it's finished 🙂

@paulrickards not sure if real or nanoraptor
@aburka Best compliment ☺️ cc: @NanoRaptor
@paulrickards Those keys look really nice! I wonder how durable the water slide decals will be. Possibly 3D printing directly onto a laser printout might last longer? I messed with that briefly for making a case for the IIc to QuickTake adapter, it was very difficult to get the printed sheet aligned where the 3D print was going to be.

@fozztexx Not sure about durability but we’ll find out. Saw someone do it but use an acrylic clear coat on top. Might try that.

For printing on top method did you scrub away the paper layer after?

@paulrickards Yah. It left a kind of rough surface. I've seen it done elsewhere with overhead transparency film, but I only have a few sheets and didn't want to use it on an experiment.
@paulrickards Huh I still have mine, the battery is dead though
@paulrickards Does adding keytops make the keys more ergonomic? I have a PocketChip but repeatedly pinching stiff buttons on a thin circuit board isn't something my wrists can take for long.
@psf Better but still not great. I still wouldn’t want to type on it for too long.
@paulrickards I've got a bricked Pocket chip that I haven't been able to restore because a needed code repo isn't up any more. I'm curious about your setup here. Is that running Basilisk?

@wysiwyggins I think I saw someone duplicated the repos, but I've never had to do it myself. Maybe this?

I'm using MiniVMac. More details in this thread at the top, including a blog post I wrote about how I got it to compile.

Good luck!

Reflashing the Pocket CHIP in 2023

In the event you need to reflash a CHIP computer in 2023 or later, this post contains a walkthrough of a successful reflash using Ubuntu 14.04 on a Live USB.

@paulrickards huh, I didn’t realize Mini Vmac did system 7’s that late. Cool!
@paulrickards well, this all may have just expedited “dig out pocketCHIP from storage” on my to-do list.

@Famicoman Pssst, I just uploaded the models I collected for this plus the art for the waterslide decals for the key caps.

@paulrickards Impressive! My PocketCHIP sits beyond my displays on the wall ledge. I've not used it in a few years.

What emulator is that?

The "keyboard" on the thing as is is pretty abysmal. I started to try and pull the clear adhesive sheet off, not realizing that was all that was holding the "key caps" in place -- figured it out before too late, thankfully.

#PocketCHIP #BBS #Linux

@blakespot Thanks! It's MiniVMac with LToUDP enabled so I can do AppleTalk with it. More details in this thread at the top or on my blog post:

https://biosrhythm.com/?p=2688

The new keyboard I printed isn't much better feeling, unfortunately. But what it does do it make the keys easier to find in this quirky layout.

» Macintosh Emulation and Printing using Mini VMac on a PocketCHIP

@paulrickards Very nice - I shall read it.

I didn't realize MiniVMac added color at some point.

@blakespot Yep, it'll emulate up to a Mac II with 256 colors and 8MB of RAM.
@paulrickards But is it 32-bit clean?!?!
@blakespot Haha I don't think so
@paulrickards what is this Max OS platform?!?!?! This is cool!
@paulrickards whit those key caps it seem can be used! I need to find mine and replace the broken touch
@paulrickards is the pencil pocket a sharpener? Because the pencil is smaller in some pictures 🤣
@OnceUponAGoblin Haha no but an interesting idea for an upgrade 😆 It just turns the pencil into a kickstand for it.
@paulrickards I wish there was a pi designed to slot into this case
@howtophil That would be really cool!
@paulrickards They could call it the pi-kit-chip
@paulrickards oh nice... are these chips still a misery to flash ?
@oz Probably? I’ve been lucky to not have to do so, yet!
@billgoats There's a whole day for Flying Toasters?! And it happens every week?! You have made me so happy with this knowledge.
@paulrickards
@bitcrush_io there is if you want there to be :D
@paulrickards ok you've sold us, now we just have to figure out how to reset our PocketCHIP since the donor didn't give us a password...
@mediaarchaeologylab Yeesss! It boots to the icon menu? Tried the default passwords?
@paulrickards tried "chip", are there others?
@mediaarchaeologylab AFAIK, just that one but used for both user chip and root.
@paulrickards hmmmm fun. we'll poke some more...

@paulrickards @stroughtonsmith Makes me wish I still had my pocketchip
@paulrickards I’ve worked on the PocketCHIP for so long, it holds a special place in my heart. I’m glad it’s still being used today to make awesome things like this.
@paulrickards Ah, Quark XPress 3.1. That’s the first version I started using on my Centris 610.

@paulrickards

(I have paid for and not received a PocketCHIP on *two* separate occasions, so I've taken that as a sign from $DEITY that I am not meant to own one.)

@suetanvil @paulrickards Chris, if I'm able to get my PocketCHIP going again, shall I send it to you?

@scruss @paulrickards

Alas, I think that time has passed. I've moved on to meaning to do things with my Pinebook Pro.

@suetanvil @paulrickards I've been meaning to do things with a Synertek SYM-1 since 1988, so I feel you

(Same goes for an OLPC and an Asus Eee)

@paulrickards Oh nice, i recently re-discovered my Pocket CHIP in a desk, similarly abandoned .. now I think I have a fun new project .. thanks !
