Can I ask a favour?

If you see someone who is asking for help using this place, and if no one else is helping them, could you tag me into the conversation and/or link to my website https://fedi.tips?

I'm trying to provide unofficial tech support for people using Mastodon and the wider Fediverse. I'm especially keen to help new people who want easy-to-understand advice, but they won't see me and I won't see them unless someone tags me.

Thanks πŸ™

@FediTips thanks for all your work in making Fedi welcoming! πŸ€—

@FediTips

This is so good of you. πŸ‘πŸ½

@FediTips

You are doing a great service.

Thank you!

@FediTips I need some help! I want to post some code, but if I use the ``` code here ``` method nothing seems to happen to me.
But I've seen someone post code in detailed format. So, how is it possible?

@mattiagiovanetti

Ordinary Mastodon, which your server mastodon.uno is using, does not let people add text formatting.

However, some servers are running altered versions of Mastodon which do allow people to format text.

Ordinary Mastodon can display formatted text, even though it cannot write it.

There is lots more information about this topic in this guide: https://fedi.tips/is-mastodon-compatible-with-rich-text-formatting-such-as-markdown/

@mattiagiovanetti Looks good to me.
@mariellequinton uhm... maybe on mastodon.uno this method doesn't work, but thanks for the quick reply!
@mattiagiovanetti It's probably your app, maybe try out other apps to see if they format better? Hopefully you find one that you love!
@mariellequinton I'm using Firefox and I'm running Ubuntu Studio, I suppose is the mastodon's platform I'm using: mastodon.uno from Italy.
@mattiagiovanetti There are several Mastodon web apps/clients. I'm currently using trunks on Android, but it's available via the web too https://trunks.social/login I think Elk and phanpy are quite popular but there's a list here https://joinmastodon.org/apps

A cross platform mastodon client. Available on Android, iOS, Mac and Web.

@FediTips could we consider launching a translation ?

@mthgn

I can't host any translations because it would get very complicated to keep them up to date.

However, the text on my site is available to anyone under Creative Commons Attribution Sharealike, so there are people who have made their own translated tips sites using my text.

There are a couple in French:

@FediTips thank you. I’ve been trying to figure out how to build lists like I can in bluesky

@GreetingsOut

There are Lists on Mastodon, but they are meant as personal "mini timelines". You add accounts you're already following and those accounts' posts and boosts appear on the List. You can then optionally hide them from your main timeline, which is a good way of reducing how busy your main timeline is.

@FediTips Oh, there we go, relevant to one of my recent posts, why do I see posts as barely having any Favourites and even the ones that do have them, when I go to see who Favourited it, it shows no one?

@Brian

The numbers and favourites below a post are lower priority on here, and they don't necessarily get updated as often or as widely as the numbers on the original version of a post. You can check what the most accurate numbers and favourites are on a post by going to its "original page", more info at https://fedi.tips/what-are-original-pages-in-mastodon

@FediTips I see it now, went to this: https://wetdry.world/@micr0/115375745664561354 post and although it shows 1 Favourite for me, I went to the server it's hosted on and suddenly…1.500 Favourites…Now the Fediverse seems way bigger than it did to me.

I made a thing called Wellness Ping because someone I care about went silent and it took too long for anyone to notice. You get regular check-ins via email. If you don't respond, your emergency contacts get notified. Built it for anyone who might go missing and needs someone to notice: activists, journalists, researchers, solo folks. I paid for premium hosting (high-reliability VPS in Sweden) and a quality email provider because uptime actually matters for something like this. Also paying extra for minimal data retention (7 days email activity, working toward zero content storage). Free forever (as long as I'm alive) and open source. https://wellness-p.ing

@Brian

Yup! Basically, it's easier not to pay attention to numbers on here, they aren't considered important πŸ™‚

There was concern from the developers and early users on here about how people were trying to "farm" numbers on Twitter, Instagram etc. By downplaying the numbers, it avoids encouraging lots of fake engagement. That's why you can't even see the numbers if you're just browsing your main timeline, to prevent them mattering so much.

@FediTips Really smart, great job on whoever came up with that.

LB: remembered that I'm giving away advertising space for free PURELY BECAUSE THE WORST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD WANT TO CHARGE LOADS OF MONEY FOR IT, please give me your 468x60 pixel non-animated banner for your hobby website or small (small!) business. Make it colourful and cool looking like something that someone would want to click. I'm not going to put it over content or move stuff around just as someone's moving their finger to tap on something or any of that bullshit, I'm not going to TRICK people into clicking it accidentally, so if you want anyone to click on it then it has to be Actually Enticing. Put it in https://www.improbableisland.com/hobbysites.php and tell your webring. EDIT: expand this thread for examples of good ads, cool/interesting replies and some of the most incredibly niche websites you've ever seen

@FediTips
Thanks for that! I gave up on Facebook & pretty much all social media years ago, then heard about Mastodon. So far, so good!
