Apple to Europe: „Your laws are bad for us, therefore we are withholding unrelated features from your citizens and do everything possible to lobby against your laws.“

Apple in the USA: „We only follow the laws and orders of our authoritarian government, there is nothing we can do against it.“

@_holger They are pulling the same shit for other authoritarian/fictatoriah governments.
@_holger one must follow the local laws
@j_hearsay so why aren’t they following local EU laws like the Digital Markets Act?
@_holger @j_hearsay because they know we stick to the rule of law and not offering a service is not against any law. Also the EU forced them to use USB-C.
@j_hearsay @_holger what is the legal basis for the removal of the apps? all articles I’ve read simply cite “pressure from the justice department”.
@UlrikeHahn @j_hearsay that‘s what I heard as well and that’s why I wrote „orders from the government“ - maybe I could have phrased it better.
@_holger @j_hearsay I see nothing wrong with your post, I was querying the necessity of Apple’s response on the grounds that “local laws have to be followed” as suggested by j_hearsay’s reply.
I haven’t heard any legal grounds for why Apple would have to comply so far, and would be interested to know if there are any…
@_holger @j_hearsay this piece suggests the app is completely legal and there is no legal basis for its removal https://pluralistic.net/2025/10/06/america-with-chinese-characteristics/
Pluralistic: Apple’s unlawful evil (06 Oct 2025) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

@_holger One of these is an authoritarian government that acts completely irresponsibly, the other a democratic one that is bound by laws.

Sad but true: it is clear that Europe will cave in, while in the US the company is facing the threat of being broken up.

@_holger Choose your battles carefully.

An enemy of my enemy is my friend.

If Apple decide not to comply with the "Chat Control" law (if it comes into effect) then we should take that as some sort of win against that draconian proposal.

#ChatControl

@_holger @mattiem May I remind you of China and AirDrop to foreigners 10 min limit sir?
@yar @_holger You do not need to - this is terrible too!
@_holger Europe to Apple: Sounds good. We'll make our own open source hardware and software and you can fuck off.
@justin @_holger I really wish that would be the reaction. Just take the money that these companies have to pay for their bullshit and make something better.

Apple to Europe: „Your laws are bad for us, therefore we are withholding unrelated features from your citizens

This citizen of Europe is withholding money from Apple by a

total boycott of apple products and services.

I also encourage others to do the same.

@Kerplunk I hope you’re doing the same thing with Microsoft, Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc.

@ahltorp
Hi Magnus,

I dumped microsoft many years ago, never used facebook, have a non google phone use alternative search engines and browsers. Sideload applications, mostly from FDroid.

I am not fully out of amazon because I still have a couple of articles in warranty, without an account they make claims impossible.
I can close the account next springtime.

Desktop and Laptop.
My OS of choice antiX with ICEWM,
init runit.

Main Browsers
LibreWolf,
UngoogledChromium
Tor

@Kerplunk That is admirable, but for many people it’s not an option.

”sideload […] mostly from FDroid” seems to imply that you’re running Android (Google), and that you are running applications from an ”official” app store as well. Are you?

Here in Sweden, you are basically locked out of many government and private services if you don’t use either the Apple or Google app stores. BankID, the banks’ common authentication system, only works through those.

#FuckApple #FuckTimCook

Sucks up to #queerphobic #MAGATrump, gives this bastard money and gifts (wtf?) , bans an anti-ICE app... Yeah overgrown Timmy and his lot can FUCK OFF !!

The answer from Europe should be, good luck, make our day...
Missing the EU market is an economical suicide.

@_holger remember, everyone, they only follow the law without resistance, if the law somehow benefits them
@_holger Bending to the powers for favor
@_holger Maybe Europe should become more authoritarian towards Apple and its crony friends.
@_holger Also, one threatens the core business model of Apple, the other doesn’t.

@_holger This just says "We like legislation which boosts our business. If you country has legislation which compromises that, go change your laws to accomodate us"

Europe to Apple: Go f*ck yourself. You need us, we don't need you. We make the rules here, not you. If you want to do business here, accept the rules like every other company. You're not special. And we're certainly not going to change the law just for you. You don't even pay taxes in most European countries.

@_holger That's because they already have the US government eating out of their hand (regulatory capture) but not so much in Europe

@_holger Then in China ...

"Yes, dear leader, you say jump and I ask how high?!"

- Tim Cook

@_holger boycott all bad behaviours
@_holger unfortunately that is the difference between operating in a democracy and operating in a fascist authoritarian regime, they feel free to play manipulation games against the EU because they know there won't be any punitive attack against them beyond the laws that have been enacted to protect the consumers, whereas if they piss off the big fat orange turd they know they could find themselves being attacked or murdered by masked thugs in their own homes...
@_holger you do not understand its so easy: Money and Data
@_holger some times I miss the days of not having a smart phone and living in absolute bliss.
@_holger Apple in China: How dare you try and get some privacy. Blocked that app, blocked that app. Now how are those suicide nets hiding up?
@_holger and people who still want to argue that Apple is misunderstood or something, lol
@_holger Billionaires have decided that the nazi regime will bolster profits and keep undesirables from having a say
@_holger Ain't this the grand category mistake in a nutshell.
@_holger They're also happy to comply with the fascists running occupied mainland China.
