@bodhipaksa I have a similar one from a while ago
:\
@bodhipaksa @TheComfortableSpotPodcast All true, and yet....
We won't stop the pernicious effects of #capitalist #clickbait focussed social media if we don't leave it ourselves, and persuade those around us to leave it, too. I do understand how hard this is, and I would hate to be an impediment to young people building their social networks in a way that works for them, but...
@bodhipaksa @TheComfortableSpotPodcast I had that issue with Facebook and Google messenger/hangouts. I left with the line "If keeping in touch with me is as important to you as my privcy and safety is to me, you'll reach me [here]".
...many did not. Oh well. I have better friends now.
@mattas.bsky.social @bodhipaksa I still have a Twitter account and I see what's happening there.
Recently, they rolled out automatic porn filtering in EU an UK. Nowadays, you can't view images and videos Twitter marks as "sensitive content" unless you send a picture of your ID somewhere in Twitter settings to verify that you're an adult. The filter is buggy and there's a way to bypass it. This way I could keep my ID safe and I still can see what's being filtered.
And, as I said earlier, I saw Twitter hiding truly non-sensitive, non-political images claiming it's a sensitive content. That's why I think these kind of filters are just dumb. I think that could also be the case with Instagram. It's possible that the filter isn't targeting any political content. Maybe it just decided to hide the image with no apparent reason and it's just by chance that it happened to be something that far-right doesn't like.
Scenes from the halls of New York's immigration courts.
As good as a confession…
@bodhipaksa if you're on Instagram you are literally giving money to someone who hired a neonazi to unbias his AI engine.
So sorry but no surprise here.
In my opinion it's none of my business whether or not asylum seekers are going to make the country great. If they are fleeing persecution and need help that we are able to give then we should give it. There are literally 10s of millions of people here already who aren't making the country great, what's a few 10s of thousands more?
@elfburgerman Unfortunately not likely. She's 18 and yesterday was her first day on her new college campus. Friends are important, and corporate social media is where her friends are.
The sad thing is they don't have any viable alternative that isn't toxic. The Fediverse is never going to work at that scale; it would have huge problems with moderation and safety, for example. So kids are stuck with this, and we (that is, our corporate-owned politicians) are not going to change anything.
@elfburgerman I'd like to be wrong about that!
Yes, it's a good point that universities and colleges could have their own servers. But high schools and middle schools? I don't think they have the resources for moderation.* That's the age that kids are getting into social media. And when things went badly wrong with moderation in, say, a high school social network (think bullying, suicide) it's a very different thing from when that happens in a corporate network. Weirdly.)
* The footnote is that in an ideal world we would make this happen and not allow corporate social media to distort the minds of our young people. But our politicians are owned by the capitalists, and ordinary people take the current system for granted and can't imagine any alternative. In fact they're terrified of anything else. (Which would be "socialism" of course.)
@ArtHarg That is a good word! (Thank you, Wiktionary!)
There seems to be some overlap with the Scots word, muck (which is not quite the same as its English equivalent.)
@bodhipaksa I'm so confused by young people staying on these platforms. Like weren't they calling Insta and FB boomer base alpha?
I always got shit for posting on FB or Insta and now that I'm off them all the people who gave me shit are still farting around there.
