If you were going to play a Role Playing Game, who would your character be?
@RickiTarr I have always leaned into non-human melee DPS type roles. Backstory usually includes some kind of alienation from family/village/race of origin. Whether it was pen and paper back in the early 80's (D&D) or early online (Everquest, WoW, etc). As an old dude now it's fun to look back to see stuff I struggled with worked out in fictional ways like that.

@RickiTarr I do!
I have an ogre with anger issues for a warrior, a fire witch who is blatantly insane, an ice wizard who's a stoner that rides around naked, and a Bad priest who dislikes almost everyone and doesn't heal strangers.

This is in an MMO and I don't think others necessarily understand that this isn't me, honest!
If you're gonna roleplay, play the roles!!

@RickiTarr My character would be... SUPER DEMOCRAT...LOL.
@RickiTarr Marvin the Paranoid Android from hitchhikers
@RickiTarr Since my career has always involved being responsible, someone thoroughly disreputable. A thief and a vagabond, maybe.
@RickiTarr
the pizza delivery boy ๐Ÿ˜

@RickiTarr

A bridge troll with OCD who winks out of existence for 3 minutes every time he hiccups.

@RickiTarr
Mycodruid or octopus, depending on the setting.

@RickiTarr Iโ€™m in the process of making a storm sorcerer moon elf who has been living in the wild for reasons I havenโ€™t fully fleshed out as of yet. Been quite a few years since I played, so it took me far longer to figure the rest out of the stuff than Iโ€™d like to admit. Iโ€™m hoping to find an online beginners D and D campaign after Iโ€™m done, or an in person if Iโ€™m lucky enough. No one I know plays anymore.

Iโ€™ve always leaned into mage & ranger archetypes whenever I play.

@RickiTarr
It's difficult to answer that question without knowing the setting and system. If you mean D&D, I almost always play a human rogue.
@Dr_Ubertrout @RickiTarr Exactly this. What is the setting?

In first-person "roleplaying" video games like Skyrim, Fallout 4, Mass Effect
et al, I'm more or less the 'paladin' who's trying to fix everything and save everyone, or as close to everyone as I can manage. (Which is why it INFURIATES me that in Mass Effect 3, after all the work you put into getting a peaceful resolution between the Quarians and the Geth, the destroy-the-Reapers ending choice โ€” the ONLY "canonical" ending IMO, it's what you've spent the entire game trilogy promising to do โ€” forces you to destroy the geth. It's a hobnailed boot to the face from Bioware's writers.)

In fantasy-oriented desktop RPGs like D&D, GURPS et al, I tended to be the fighter-mage, the warrior with some arcane special abilities, the outcast without a clan, the loner who could never find anywhere he
belonged. But principled, never a murder-hobo. I always preferred the clever solution over "Kill them all, the gods will know their own." But leave me no other option and I will end you.

Who was that masked warrior?"
@Dr_Ubertrout @RickiTarr In Skyrim, my personal head-canon for how the game SHOULD have ended goes like this:

After the Dragonborn has dealt with Alduin the World-eater, the problem of the civil war remains. The Dragonborn
does not join the Empire's side, nor the Stormcloaks, instead taking matters into their own hands and bringing down Ulfric Stormcloak,ยน thus ending the civil war. With the civil war ended, the Dragonborn secures the backing of the other Jarls, and becomes High King of Skyrim. As High King, the Dragonborn sends General Tullius and the Imperial army back to Cyrodiil since, absent a civil war, there is no longer any justification for the Imperial army to remain in Skyrim unless the Empire wishes war with a united Skyrim. The Dragonborn appoints Mjรถll the Lioness as the new Jarl of Riften, with full authority to clean it up, and meets with Emperor Titus Mede โ€” but not to assassinate him. Instead the Dragonborn asserts his claim to the Dragon Throne as Dragonborn Emperor, the re-establishment of the Septim line. Titus Mede, who is old, weary, and already dying, agrees, and names the Dragonborn as his successor before abdicating in his favor. The new Dragonborn Emperor, taking the last name of Septim, unites Skyrim and the rest of Cyrodiil, and then leads a combined army backed by dragon air-support to kick the Thalmor, the Nazis of Tamriel, all the way back to the Summerset Isles, liberating Morrowind in the process.

ยน When I last came up against him,
one empowered Fire Breath shout and Ulfric and his right-hand man (whose name I forget) were crispy critters.
@RickiTarr Vampire The Masquerade, a Ventrue who's used his supernatural social manipulation for money (in service to the clan [and other vampires{but don't tell the clan}]) and success, at the cost of losing every human connection near and dear

Autopilot from the "Airplane!"

@RickiTarr Sous-chef at the local inn, wielding a +2 Enchanted Soup Ladle, crafting butternut squash Elixirs of Satiety.
@RickiTarr No matter the race or the class, always chaotic neutral.
@RickiTarr a female slightly arrogant โ€žfaceโ€œ character (the talker of the group) with light psi-abilities in a post apocalyptic setting
@RickiTarr George Smiley. I really want a Circus RPG. But who would ever want to play Karla?

@RickiTarr

It would be exactly this warlock/sorceror/dead-goddess-avatar because it is

@RickiTarr A ridiculously potent magic user whose incantations spoil milk and rot eggs as a side effect of casting, and whose passion in life, the thing around which the game revolves, is baking.

@Willow @RickiTarr

As absolutley, by the book, totally normal, rule abiding, law abiding, straighlaced, sober, honest person.

Well would make a nice change!

@Willow @RickiTarr So, they make a mean Texas sheet cake? I mean you use spoiled milk for that soโ€ฆ
@RickiTarr Of course now I'm remembering a Champions character who acquired superpowers as a result of A Bizarre Accident (of course) set up by the game master, and (of course) had to discover them as he went along.

Cut to character casually strolling in mid-air past third-floor windows of the hospital he woke up in after the accident, merrily ablaze, smiling and waving cheerfully at patients in the rooms.
@RickiTarr Why did you want to know anyway? Were you looking for ideas?
@GeoffreyWinn I just like imagining a Mastodon wide RPG game, with a very interesting array of characters.

@RickiTarr

A hermit living in a cave studying ancient tomes of knowledge in search of meaning against the backdrop of near-immortality.

@RickiTarr

RPG character?

A somewhat anorexic hobbit mage with little affinity for cooking, merriment, or magicโ€”but an eye for useful magical knickknacks, one that will eventually let her channel lightning with shocking results. She is able to see through the eyes of her Raven familiar, but that compact cost her ring finger. The raven ate it. What hobbit man would marry someone every hobbit calls a witch behind her back anyway? On the road, she uses the elven name Nertรซ, which means nine, but the spiteful call her Nazgรปla, which also means nine but is a reference to The Nine, specifically the nine ringwraiths. She's not very scary in face or expression, and some call her cute since if you ignore her hairy feet, she seems like a short teenage daughter of humans. Her hair is flaming red.

@RickiTarr Yeesh, I totally donโ€™t do RPGsโ€ฆ uh a snide chatty kermit-like frog creature with attitude but also funny. I keep a ready stash of sparkles to chuck when things need to lighten up.

@wendinoakland

a steady stash of sparkles to chuck

This made my day. And succeeded in lightening things up! โœจ

@RickiTarr Dwarf alchemist who licks every substance. CN, of course.

@RickiTarr A handsome, roguish healer.

Stick to what you know....

@RickiTarr oddly enough starting with a new group tomorrow! It looks like ill be playing an archery focused monk named Dorn, he meditates and seeks control through it...

Might as well intermix my various hobbies together after all!

The idea of being able to turn my mind to archery as an actual full life thing Like an old kyudo master would be a dream...

@RickiTarr Chaotic good. No matter what, I can't seem to play evil characters, I keep abandoning every playthrough where I tried that. Except in Rimworld, but that's another matter entirely.

@RickiTarr A halfling thief who would instantly murder and steal from everyone in his party if he weren't on the run from his former accomplices whom he left to burn in a house during a heist gone wrong, and didn't need protection from them. His current party does not know.

It's the only way I found to play a neutral evil character convincingly, and it truly did work. He's my longest-lived #RPG character (3y over various adventures) and I'm not done with him yet.

@RickiTarr I spent a lovely 3 years playing 'Seamus the Unclothed,' a gnome barbarian with a warhammer, a dream, and not a stitch to wear.

@RickiTarr

How about a Vulcan who goes on vacation to Terra but then loses his return ticket home and gets stranded there?

@RickiTarr A Tibetan monk hermetically sealed within a chamber without light, sound, communications devices, or ventilation.
