A guy who I've known many decades said that my embrace of the far left had lowered his opinion of me a lot.

We were talking about wealth taxes, qua my earlier post about 90% tax rates. But not just income taxes, estate taxes, real estate taxes, generally speaking, asset taxes.

The billionaire class has to cease to exist. What the bootlickers defending them seem to not understand, is that this is the *nice* way to make that happen.

"You're not far left," a buddy says.

In a world with fascists controlling every part of the federal government, I'm disinclined to argue with "far left" as a description. At least it clearly distinguishes me from the Nazis.

@fatsam 'Far Left' is meaningless as a comparative term. It's only meaningful when defined intrinsically. Tankies are Far Left. Stalinists are Far Left. "You've got to break a few eggs to make an omelette" is a Far Left sentiment. People who oppose fascism or unbridled capitalism, however earnestly, are not Far Left for that reason.

@wesdym @fatsam

It's possibly not such a thing in the US, but in Europe many centre-left (ie socialist and social democrat) parties adopted economic liberalism in the 1990s and dropped their left-wing economic policies while pretending to still be centre-left to hold on to their voter base.

Those who continued to oppose economic liberalism were duly called 'far' or 'hard' left so that mainstream centrist parties could continue to call themselves left-wing.

@fatsam
Compared to Europe the US basically has one party with two right wings.
@nekodojo white people in Europe often think that. None of them belong to political parties as diverse as the Democratic Party.

@fatsam

People who automatically criticise the left tend to have been brainwashed or are simply too ignorant to change their opinions to suit the circumstances.....and at a time when billionaires are dictating economic policy to supposedly democratic govts it's probably time to give those left-wing ideas a second look.

People shouldn't pick a side for life, because matching your political views to current circumstances is no different from steering a car around bends in the road.

@fatsam Tax them into the dirt.
@fatsam I'd much rather talk things over like civilized folks, and tax the corporations and billionaires so they pay their fair share.
The French solution is riskier for all, and quite painful for the survivors.
@Jirikiha @fatsam the "French Solution" is a great euphemism. 💯

@ktneely @Jirikiha @fatsam

"The French Solution" will now become part of my vocabulary.

@Jirikiha @fatsam

There is this to be said for the French solution--it lingers. To this day the French government is shit-scared of their people. The proles only have to threaten to go on strike and the government caves.

@Uair @Jirikiha @fatsam to be fair, the French also riot at the drop of a baguette. Which, I think, is why it works for them. The politicians know they can’t ignore the wishes of the people because the people will cheerfully bring the country to a grinding halt if they’re not happy about something.

Anglophones are not good at rioting, we tend to bottle it all up until it explodes. We need to learn to be willing to stop traffic until our needs are met.

@Jirikiha @fatsam Sadly, the billionaires and corporations are not "civilised folks".
Civility did not defeat Hitler.
@Jirikiha @fatsam I don't recall any actual survivers.

@fatsam

What that person might call the far left is called Socialism in Europe and the UK and is in no way extremist.

It's how a modern society not stuck in the middle ages should be run.

When someone states their dislike of Socialism I ask them if they would like to work Saturdays regularly, not have public holidays and forgo their state pension.

Strangely enough they generally decline the offer 🙄🤦‍♂️

@simonzerafa @fatsam What most Americans would call "far left" isn't remotely "socialist" in any civilized-world sense. It's smack in the mainstream of the UK's Labour or Germany's SPD -- and the former is likely to show you the door if you advocate anything truly socialist.

@marcas @fatsam

Sadly UK Labour isn't very socialist these days. Frankly their nickname three days is Red Tories 🫤

@simonzerafa @fatsam The brainwashing USians have been submitted to in regards to socialism is a case of study for future generations, if we ever get there.
The fact that they don't know the difference between Marxism, communism, social-democracies, and other kinds of governments is both a failure on their education system and a triumph of their far-right believers

@Johns_priv @simonzerafa @fatsam

It's what happens when you make something taboo. People stop talking about it till they become ignorant.

@Johns_priv @simonzerafa @fatsam and it’s so selective around issues.

Their fire service is government-run and funded by taxes. Everything they should hate. But not even the most hardened Reaganist suggests privatising it. But they’ll trot out the old line that governments can’t run things and funding services from taxation is a terrible infringement on liberty.

@fatsam I *want* the low opinion of certain people.
@kentenmakto @fatsam "Your boos mean nothing, I've seen what makes you cheer."

@fatsam True. That said, though, a season or so of La Terreur might be just the thing for teaching these parasites the fear of god.

Put a bit of stick about, that sort of thing.

@marcas @fatsam
You should read The Rebel by Albert Camus
Everyone advocating violence and murder for rebellion should read it. It will make you think.

@JoBlakely @marcas the deaths of Robespierre, his brother, and friends, got me there already. Peaceful revolution is always preferable to violent revolution.

... but not always possible.

@marcas @fatsam just look at how they reacted to one assassination of a health insurance company executive.

That said, "the French Solution" ended up running rampant amongst more than just the nobility and moneyed classes in France or even those that deserved it. Once you pull the pin on that grenade you never know where it will end up tossed.

@fatsam I think I’m quite far into centre-right to right on this. I think we should have wealth taxes that are aimed at ensuring no one has a net worth over about $100m. I think it’s probably a better plan than the far left alternative, which involves guillotines.
@david_chisnall @fatsam the French Revolution was not at all a far-left „Solution“ to the problem of „the rich“. In its first phase, the wealthy citizens fought for a constitutional monarchy and their civil rights.
When that was threatened by internal and external counter-revolutionary powers, it lead to a „radical“ democratic republic (the one with the guillotines) and when that failed, a rule of the upper middle and upper class was established, which fought 1/2

@david_chisnall @fatsam Both against movements for social equality and movements to bring back the monarchy.
I fail to see the far left in power here.

The killing was done by what we would now call upper class guys who wanted to really wipe the floor with the aristocracy because they were fed up with only having money but very little power.

@klarnebel @david_chisnall is that a comment about the terror? No, I wouldn't recommend that as any approach to plan on. Look what happened to Robespierre, his brother, and his friends.
@fatsam @david_chisnall I don’t say that anyone should do anything like that. I don’t want that. I just want to disprove myth that the French Revolution was a far-left one.

@david_chisnall oh, sure, if you want to call that center right, the label doesn't concern me. Better to tax than chop.

But I'm open to chopping.

@fatsam

It’s a question of where you put the Overton Window. There are two extremes:

  • Allow billionaires to accumulate all wealth, control governments, and reduce everyone else to serfs.
  • Round them up and execute them.

Framing a wealth tax that aims to reduce wealth imbalance to levels that are sustainable in a democracy as an extreme is ignoring one of the real extremes.

@david_chisnall @fatsam Nazi Germany used the guillotine between 1933 and 1945 to execute 16,500 prisoners so not just the left.
@Darberoom1954 Modern day Nazis always claim that Nazi Germany was politically left because they named it "National-Socialism", only focusing on the last word and totally ignoring the first.
@david_chisnall @fatsam
@fatsam the not nice way was guillotines last time around

@pipe_dreams @fatsam

we can do it again if they like

@darwinwoodka I prefer the friendly option where everyone pays their fair share. But right now the ball is totally in the court of the multi-billionairs. They can choose their preferred method.
@pipe_dreams @fatsam
@pipe_dreams @fatsam The “last time”? The last time in my cultural sphere was when the people rose up and killed all of the feudal landlords that oppressed them. And then a bunch of other shіt happened that makes it hard to talk about with outsiders, but personally, I see the mass execution of landlords to be a net positive for society.
@enoch_exe_inc @fatsam I was talking about the French revolution where the nobility was killed en masse. Same principle. It was the next thing I could think of from my cultural background.
Same principle.
To be clear I do not condone violence of any kind against anyone and above example ended in extremely bloody dictatorship.Not what we want. Pacifist here
But I don't care at all about riots and property damage they need to learn the hard way it seems.They don't hear our pleas on their yachts.
@pipe_dreams @enoch_exe_inc @fatsam The French Revolution happened a long time ago, and there are other, more successful revolutions that actually accomplished more than eventually restoring the monarchy multiple times or getting an Emperor instead of a King. For example, the Chinese Revolutions…the first of which got us the only liberal-democratic elections ever and he declared himself emperor shortly afterwards.
@pipe_dreams @enoch_exe_inc @fatsam For anyone wondering why modern China doesn’t have Western-style democratic elections, Yuan Shikai is basically why. One step forward, two steps back. And then the Warlord Era began. And then the Shanghai Massacre and eventual Long March. And then the Japanese invaded. It’s really not hard to see why the Land Reform Movement after the dust settled had hundreds of millions of peasants murdering all of their landlords.
@enoch_exe_inc @fatsam are you talking about the communist revolution in Russia or China by chance? I understand the people and their desire for freedom from feudalism. I also totally get the appeal of communism. It is at its core a very nice philosophy about fundamental equality. Marx and Engels are from my country. Sadly that also ended in dictatorship and oppression. The philosophy was very very fast turned into another tool of oppression of other power hungry people.
@enoch_exe_inc @fatsam sometimes in dark hours I doubt that there is any core moral good in humans at all. But there are always counter examples. The fedi community for example. So I conclude the rant on a positive note.
Thank you fediverse for bringing such nice people to my phone. And thanks to the mods and admins for keeping it nice and providing the infrastructure for this wonderful place.
@fatsam no one on the left as far as I know has any issues with millionaires. Heck, I might even be one by the time I retire if my investments work out. But no one needs to be a billionaire. Unless you want individuals buying countries, which I am very much against.

@DragonBard @fatsam

I'm a millionaire and billionaires are an abomination

@DragonBard I don't even mind multi-millionairs or billionaires. I only have problems with multi-billionairs. People may get rich but let's make sure no one remains poor. If this puts me in the political left wing, so be it.
@fatsam
@fatsam I don't believe the obscenely rich will ever allow us to tax them out of existence. We will have to use violence instead.
@SvenGeier I saw that ages ago but could never refind it. Thanks for sharing it

@fatsam

We should have a rich society; not a poor society that happens to have some rich people in it.

@fatsam

a guy you've known many decades is a fucking idiot

@fatsam We are quickly approaching the point where the "French Solution" may become the only Avenue left open.
The Cost of U.S. Wars Then and Now

Though it lasted fewer than four years, World War II was the most expensive war in United States history. Adjusted for inflation to today’s dollars, the war cost over $4 trillion and in 1945, the war’s last year, defense spending comprised about 40% of gross domestic product (GDP). During that time, the government used new methods to raise the required funds and succeeded in accomplishing its goal. While the wars waged in today’s world are significant and costly, they still pale in comparison to the size and financial impact of World War II.

@fatsam You can suggest that guy to check history and find out how the French handled that in the past. Include a picture of January 6, it already contains a clue.
@fatsam but wont anyone consider all the aspiring billionaires who will one day profit from the status quo

@fatsam Anybody that opposes a wealth tax has no capability to think for themselves.

I’ve talked to some conservatives about this, and in 100% of cases, their opposition was “if they can tax that wealth, they can tax mine!”

Sweeties, they already tax you WAY more than the wealthy. And you will never ever ever be wealthy enough to be hit by these taxes. Which is their other big delusion: they really think someday they will strike it rich.

In summary, the conservative movement is a small number of greedy rich people, and a LARGE amount of profoundly stupid people who think they are part of a “club” with the rich ones who don’t care about them at all.
