I received an email from an #AI training company in which they are

disappointed the recently-passed big bill didn’t include a proposed moratorium on U.S. state-level AI regulation.

Because regulation will cause harm due to not knowing enough about the tech.

And then later goes into the AI News section, in which one is a report of LLMs committing blackmail in an Anthropic study, and another report of LLMs with access to tools using them deceptively to avoid oversight, resist efforts to be replaced, etc.

Well, I'm convinced! Convinced that some serious thought needs to be applied here and if the federal government can't do it (which they obviously cannot), then it's up the states to lead, just as they did with #Privacy laws.

Do you publish a site on #Vercel? Are you annoyed by or just want to prevent scraping by #AI

Since I don't manage the underlying infrastructure, I wasn't sure if I could deploy something like #Anubis. A quick search through the docs reveals they have built-in bot mitigation settings in the firewall function, even at the free tier.

Note that these are off by default, so you need to go in and change them.

We had a bunch of #watermelon leftover from last weekend's BBQ. Why, thank you #nigellalawson for your frozen watermelon daiquiri recipe!

Two tools are needed: (a) inheritance tax (which worked well in the UK circa 1940-1980) and (b) wealth tax (over a threshold excluding a first home and a regular person's pension).

What we've got now: the bottom 50% bear 90% of the tax burden.

A guy who I've known many decades said that my embrace of the far left had lowered his opinion of me a lot. We were talking about wealth taxes, qua my earlier post about 90% tax rates. But not just income taxes, estate taxes, real estate taxes, generally speaking, asset taxes. The billionaire class has to cease to exist. What the bootlickers defending them seem to not understand, is that this is the *nice* way to make that happen.

Mastodon 🐘

With Mastodon v4.4.0 instance owners can enable HTTP referrers. That means:

If somebody clicks a link in a Mastodon post (e.g. to a news article), the link target owner (such as the news site operator) can see that a user from that instance has visited their website.

They do _only_ get the instance domain (e.g. metalhead.club). No information about the user!

I've enabled this setting, because I am sure that it will increase awareness of Mastodon's existence. 💪

Edit: (in previous versions, Mastodon did not send referrer-Headers)

"Sherman said, 'If we will not endure a king as a political power, we should not endure a king over the production, transportation, and sale of any of the necessaries of life. If we would not submit to an emperor we should not submit to an autocrat of trade with power to prevent competition and to fix the price of any commodity.'"

— Cory Doctorow: The Bezzle, pp. 13-13

Doctorow quoting Senator John Sherman's speech to Congress in 1890.

You may have heard that globalchange.gov and all the national reports on climate change have gone down.

We got em all on #sciop, a webrip and all the PDFs extracted: https://sciop.net/datasets/globalchange-gov-webrip

Has anyone used a Pine Phone Pro? Is it usable for a Linux expert, or do you have to file a bug report a week?
