In case you missed it, there is now a Fediverse alternative to Strava called Wanderer:

➡️ https://wanderer.to

There is a public server list at:

➡️ https://wanderer.to/servers

To sign up on a server, click on "Create Account", then "Login", then "Make One".

If you're running your own public Wanderer server you can add it to the list at https://github.com/Flomp/wanderer/discussions/361

Techy people can self-host using instructions at https://wanderer.to/run/installation

p.s. A number of people have replied with questions for the developer. You can follow or contact the lead dev of Wanderer at:

@FediTips brilliant to see wanderer servers setting up!
Now you can leak secret military bases on your own terms.

It's not quite the same as strava. This is less about activity tracking, and more about recording and sharing trails.

For someone like me who runs along the same location most times I run, in a paved urban area, there isn't much in the way of trails for me to reveal!

@ada

Yeah, that's fair enough.

Mainly compared it to Strava as there is an option for importing data from existing Strava account, but yeah it's not exactly the same.

Also character limit made it difficult to explain in full 😁

@FediTips @ada For future reference, perhaps a better comparison is AllTrails, though it’s still slightly less known than Strava
@villasbc @FediTips @ada
AllTrails is my go-to app as someone who likes to hike
@FediTips Adding hashtag for those #BikeTooter folks who like this stuff...
@meganL @FediTips This is all great! (love to open source).
@FediTips fabulous! But how is this different from or better the Organic Maps effort? https://organicmaps.app/donate/
Donate to support the development of Organic Maps

Your money pays for all project-related expenses and motivates us to improve Organic Maps.

@edupont_clearly

I don't think they're intended for the same purpose?

Organic Maps is a navigation app, whereas Wanderer is for recording and sharing trails. Wanderer is more like a social networking kind of thing.

@FediTips @edupont_clearly and for what it's worth, as I was about to do my rounds of donating to some of the FOSS apps I use (inc Organic Maps), I spotted (via @itsfoss ) that due to governance issues and community concerns, Organic Maps had been forked into CoMaps and had just been released. Having read up on the situation, I exported my Organic Maps data, installed CoMaps and imported my data there and then uninstalled Organic Maps. Worth letting others know I thought. https://www.comaps.app/about-us/

@healthiswealth @FediTips @edupont_clearly @itsfoss I’m a bit out of the loop on this one. So your personal stance is that CoMaps is the better path forward?
@villasbc @FediTips @edupont_clearly @itsfoss As was I and it was sad to hear OM took this turn but luckily the code has been forked and from a GUI point of view its the same for the end user. They appear to be finalising the new logo at the moment so this is to be update soon too. This link will hopefully explain further the issues and status of OM/CoMaps. Hopefully you can then make an informed decision as to what you will do. Good luck! https://www.comaps.app/news/2025-04-16/1/?ref=news.itsfoss.com
Open Letter to Organic Maps Shareholders

@healthiswealth @villasbc @FediTips @itsfoss I appreciate this thread very much! But when I read the post from April (https://www.comaps.app/news/2025-04-16/1/), I see the usual disagreement between purists and realists - is an open source app for everyone to use free of charge, or can someone build a business on it?
Open Letter to Organic Maps Shareholders

@edupont_clearly @villasbc @FediTips @itsfoss Hi. I'm not sure what the disagreements between purists & realists are but if the differences are surmised by your question then my belief is that people can do what they want. In this instance I will continue to contribute to openstreemaps by uploading my map data & now use & donate to CoMaps. I would rather my efforts & money go to a NFP where the donated money goes back into the project & the maintainers running cost, which benefits the community.
@healthiswealth @FediTips @edupont_clearly @itsfoss Interesting. Thanks for the link. Despite the conflicts of interest and impact to those involved, this goes to show the power of open source in that the community can fork and move on. Will replace my usage with CoMaps and try to be more attuned to the communications.
@FediTips and yet I still don’t get why a privacy aware/alternative to- application is hosted on GitHub and has a Discord server ? 🤷🏻‍♂️
@himmelfalden @FediTips plenty of developers there, maybe that’s it

@FediTips
@gutocarvalho Taí uma ferramenta boa para o bolha.tools 😈

@FediTips fedi search engine when?

@FediTips If #LocusMap can be persuaded to support them, I might use them (Locus Maps will upload GPS tracks to #Strava and #OpenStreetMap amongst others)

#cycling

@FediTips
Interesting. I'll check back later, and hopefully there will be more instances. Thx 🌳
@FediTips
Cool! Hoping for OpenTracks integration, though.

@FediTips maybe this could be interesting for us as well @CoMaps ?

Anyways it looks kind of cool to me! I'm interested to see where this goes :)

@Flummic @FediTips @CoMaps

That would be perfect!!

making use of the fediverse in the best possible way: Cooperate.

CoMaps with an option to feed into wanderer. Yes, please!

- This type of cooperation would be a great proof of concept that a valuable service doesn't necessarily need its own app. And that different apps can feed into the same service.

#cooperation #fediverse #unlimitedoptions

@FediTips Great initiative, and the app looks promising! I'm considering running an instance. Anyone knows if there's a plan to develop a mobile app to go along?

#wanderer

@jeremy

I don't know, the lead developer @flomp would be the one to ask 🙂

@FediTips Here's the Github feature request thread for the record: https://github.com/Flomp/wanderer/issues/387. Thanks @flomp for the answer and the transparency.

Any alternatives to the bike touring platform Warmshowers?
@FediTips Saw this and thought of you @Minty95. I remember you use Strava?
@eclecticpassions
Had a quick look, will need a LOT of work to catch up with #strava 😪 but I'll keep an eye on it.
