In case you missed it, there is now a Fediverse alternative to Strava called Wanderer:

➡️ https://wanderer.to

There is a public server list at:

➡️ https://wanderer.to/servers

To sign up on a server, click on "Create Account", then "Login", then "Make One".

If you're running your own public Wanderer server you can add it to the list at https://github.com/Flomp/wanderer/discussions/361

Techy people can self-host using instructions at https://wanderer.to/run/installation

@FediTips fabulous! But how is this different from or better the Organic Maps effort? https://organicmaps.app/donate/

@edupont_clearly

I don't think they're intended for the same purpose?

Organic Maps is a navigation app, whereas Wanderer is for recording and sharing trails. Wanderer is more like a social networking kind of thing.

@FediTips @edupont_clearly and for what it's worth, as I was about to do my rounds of donating to some of the FOSS apps I use (inc Organic Maps), I spotted (via @itsfoss ) that due to governance issues and community concerns, Organic Maps had been forked into CoMaps and had just been released. Having read up on the situation, I exported my Organic Maps data, installed CoMaps and imported my data there and then uninstalled Organic Maps. Worth letting others know I thought. https://www.comaps.app/about-us/

@healthiswealth @FediTips @edupont_clearly @itsfoss I’m a bit out of the loop on this one. So your personal stance is that CoMaps is the better path forward?
@villasbc @FediTips @edupont_clearly @itsfoss As was I and it was sad to hear OM took this turn but luckily the code has been forked and from a GUI point of view its the same for the end user. They appear to be finalising the new logo at the moment so this is to be update soon too. This link will hopefully explain further the issues and status of OM/CoMaps. Hopefully you can then make an informed decision as to what you will do. Good luck! https://www.comaps.app/news/2025-04-16/1/?ref=news.itsfoss.com
Open Letter to Organic Maps Shareholders

@healthiswealth @villasbc @FediTips @itsfoss I appreciate this thread very much! But when I read the post from April (https://www.comaps.app/news/2025-04-16/1/), I see the usual disagreement between purists and realists - is an open source app for everyone to use free of charge, or can someone build a business on it?
Open Letter to Organic Maps Shareholders

@edupont_clearly @villasbc @FediTips @itsfoss Hi. I'm not sure what the disagreements between purists & realists are but if the differences are surmised by your question then my belief is that people can do what they want. In this instance I will continue to contribute to openstreemaps by uploading my map data & now use & donate to CoMaps. I would rather my efforts & money go to a NFP where the donated money goes back into the project & the maintainers running cost, which benefits the community.
@healthiswealth @FediTips @edupont_clearly @itsfoss Interesting. Thanks for the link. Despite the conflicts of interest and impact to those involved, this goes to show the power of open source in that the community can fork and move on. Will replace my usage with CoMaps and try to be more attuned to the communications.
