Compared to all other social media platforms, Mastodon has very few 1 mintues videos (like you see those on Insta, TikTok, X etc) in my feed or in the trending tab. It has more text based content, followed by images. Very interesting! I guess humans have always liked to read and write. There is no automated alog here just humans talking and boosting what is important to them. This is how social media should be instead of constant push of clickbait videos.

#mastodon

@nixCraft Thatβ€˜s one of the things I like here most. I prefer reading. And itβ€˜s faster than any video.
@nixCraft for me, mastodon video posts load* awfully slow, so i just prefer looking for someone's thoughts on stuff and memes
@alihan_banan i didn't thought like that it might be reasons to skip it.
@alihan_banan @nixCraft Same for me. I skip posts with videos because 50% of them don't load anyway.
@nixCraft The few videos I do see are all cat videos which I 100% appreciate
@Cylis yes cat videos are our joy.
@nixCraft as a side-effect, the pace of my feed feels way more organic. I'm checking mastodon maybe once a day for a couple minutes and I've seen it all. Just as if users aren't algorithmicly pushed into delivering the next viral toot.. Quite liberating.
@AwkwardTuring @nixCraft That too. It's nice to have a social feed that doesn't look like Unity from Rick & Morty
@nixCraft Plus the amount of informative videos is wait higher here! Like this one (which informs you about this cat):
@catsalad Lmao. I didn't see that coming
@catsalad @nixCraft Very helpful video on how to operate the cat

@catsalad @nixCraft

Is that cat named Munson, by any chance?

#Kingpin

@nixCraft Short form video is so annoying. Any time someone I follow on YT posts one I ignore it. Gimme the 2 hour neurospicy cut with all the technical details.
@azonenberg @nixCraft Yes! I want those non-watered down infodumps on special interests.

@catsalad @nixCraft exactly.

Like, if i post a <1 min clip it's because the thing i want to share was actually that short and there's nothing more to say about it.

@azonenberg there is YT extension that blocks all shorts from your feed and when you search something on YouTube. give it a try.

@nixCraft I wonder if this dynamic will shift as projects like Loops and Peertube increase adoption?

I suspect however that what may not change is without centralized corporate misery profiteers optimizing every pixel of the UX to prey on cognitive heuristics, we still won't see the rate of artificial vitality with short form video on Fediverse. A blessing.

@nixCraft I wonder how much of that is just because the population here trends older? (and possibly a higher percentage of neurodivergents, which is what makes it hard for me to watch video)

@nixCraft

Videos require that you set up a camera, get the light right, get the environment quiet, film the thing, and edit it. Even with modern gear, that's still a lot more work than typing in a couple of sentences and pressing "Toot".

(And that's before we talk about attractiveness requirements.)

All of which is to say that video-centric platforms are ultimately still about a userbase that is mostly passive consumers.

@nixCraft I've always avoided TikTok-style videos and I also hear it's brainrot.

I will still watch a 1-minute video provided there's value in it and I have the conscious decision to play it.

@nixCraft I (like to) think it also might have to do with the fact that the average fedi user is conscious about the bandwidth and storage usage of their instance and the cost it entails, and therefore avoid that kind of content.
@nixCraft
I wonder if the difference comes from the type of audience.
A while ago someone told me that tik-tok was for 12 year olds. Maybe it was true back then, and how is it now? Maybe it has attracted older people that love just zapping fast on stuff and don't like reading.
@nixCraft YouTube, Instagram and others monetize the universal human weakness that very few people have defenses against. They serve you up whatever maximizes the release of dopamine, which makes their services by definition addictive, and built a monetization platform which exploits this weakness. This is why I hate YouTube shorts with a passion. It sucks you in and basically extracts life from you and turns that life into money which it hands out to influencers, the devils helpers.

@nixCraft

Eh, I would attribute it to the fact that sharing videos on fedi is a bit of a pain. I've never had a video from another instance load within a minute, especially on a phone app q_q

@nixCraft Exactly! No unnecessary dopamine.
I do wonder if Loops will ever federate in which case I expect much more of that though you are right that the culture on Mastodon is largely much less girifter-esque.
@nixCraft ...but how are investors going to make 0.01% more money if you don't constantly force the users to stay glued on pushed clickbait videos surrounded by ads? πŸ™ƒ

@nixCraft

There's no reward for instance owners to push videos. They're actually very costly in terms of storage and bandwidth, obviously.

Video platforms make money by addicting people to serve them ads. Otherwise a video platform is an incredibly dumb idea, fiscally.

@nixCraft There's other parts of the fedi that are video oriented!
@nixCraft I don't know that this will be the case forever or even that long though. There are multiple projects ongoing right now to bring short form video to the Fediverse.

@nixCraft I love reading. It engages my brain. It helps me to find my own train of thought. Understand next steps.

Videos and especially shorts have the opposite effect on me. They are super addictive and actively reduce my ability to process longer contents.

I needed to detox from video content.

@nixCraft I just can’t stand to sit and watch a video when it can be typed out and read in a minute and a half.
