Who attacks a tiny independent git host?

Assholes, that’s who.

Good job being assholes, assholes. https://social.anoxinon.de/@Codeberg/113995906071458932

Codeberg.org (@[email protected])

We are currently suffering from a network-level DDoS attack. Or maybe just a single actor. Anyway, our downlink is jammed.

social.anoxinon.de - Mastodon

Here’s what the assholes attacking Codeberg to try and make it unsuable don’t understand:

It doesn’t matter.

I can’t push to Codeberg right now? So fucking what?

You think I’m going to go running back to Github because you’ve temporarily inconvenienced me?

You think I give a couple of hundred euros to Codeberg every year to demand perfect service?

I support them by hosting my code there and by donating to them because I believe in what they do and because I want to see them succeed and to support alternatives to the likes of toxic trillion-dollar corporations like Microsoft.

So go ahead, take them off the web for as long as you can. When you’re bored, or out of money, or whatever, I’ll still be there, on Codeberg, happily supporting a local and ethical alternative to your US/Silicon Valley/Big Tech bullshit.

Oh and who’s behind it? The fucking fascists, of course. Because, of course. Fucking fascists.

“Codeberg is currently suffering from hate campaigns due to far-right forces … In the past days, several projects advocating tolerance and equal rights on Codeberg have been subject to hate attacks, such as massive spam of abusive messages in their issue trackers.

We will not be discouraged in our fight against far-right ideologies. They are currently on the rise in many parts of the world, and we believe it is important to protect all kinds of marginalized groups. However, if you believe this does not affect your project, you are wrong. Far-right forces pose a threat to all of us.

Extreme right forces actively target members of our communities and discriminate based on ethnicity and gender, political background, sexual orientation, disabilities, nationality and faith. However diversity is an important asset in free/libre software communities and it is what makes our software great and development productive.

By targetting some of our most active translators, nicest designers, best developers and all other motivated contributors, they are hurting the free/libre software ecosystem as a whole.

Don't be fooled if right-wing forces promise to "promote open source" in their political agenda. This has nothing to do with the values of our movement! This is about national patriotism and protectionism, and they will happily accept splitting our community on their way.

We all know that the free/libre software ecosystem won't work this way. Every human is an integral and equally important part of it, and targetting some of our community members threatens the ecosystem as a whole.

Let's together stay strong and united against the emerging threats. We stay strong against discrimination of all kind, including but not limited to sexism, transphobia, homophobia, racism, antisemitism and ableism. And we hope that you all join us for this mission.

A big shout-out to all the projects that collect facts and resources against hate and discrimination and that have been the primary goal of these attacks. Support them if you can.

If you ever considered supporting the fight against right-wing forces, for example by joining political movements and parties, organizing protests or getting involved in online communities with this goal - now might be the best time to move ahead.

Again, we apologize for the disruption of your work and the abusive content delivered to your mailboxes. We are doing our best to contain the situation.

We'd like to thank everyone who signaled their support in the current situation, via e-mail, Mastodon and in Matrix chats. This means a lot to us.

Thank you for your trust and support!
Your Codeberg Public Relations team”

So you want to fight fascism and make a difference right now? Do this:

Join Codeberg e.V. – become part of the organisation; part of the resistance – and actively support this valuable and ethical EU-based anti-fascist¹ git hosting alternative that’s under attack by fascists as we speak:

https://join.codeberg.org

Seriously, do it now.²

Volunteer and/or donate if you can.

Let’s send Codeberg’s membership through the roof and show these fucking fascists that when they push we push back twice as hard.

When you do, please add your voice to this thread so others can see.

I rarely ask this but please repost this far and wide.

² If you’re having trouble reaching the server, it might also be under attack. You can check the current status of all Codeberg’s servers from https://status.codeberg.org/status/codeberg

The registration server might now be getting hit too by fascists.

You can check the status of servers here:

Not to worry, this campaign will continue. And if you notice it’s green, that’s the time to get in and sign up for membership.

A couple of people have already signed up as members (that I’m aware of) in the past half hour or so.

@aral Already a member since a while ! I'm trying to make people move there too!

@hyde
...us too, members for awhile

@aral

@bhaugen @hyde @aral
Same here and I am just paging, of using my account (yet, maybe never, future will tell) for code presentation.

#JoinCodeberg

@aral thank you for bringing codeberg to my awareness 🫡
@urlyman You’re very welcome :)
@aral unfortunately I've had too many messes, mainly food bank visit delays, to join them this month, but next month should work & did a little thread on this... because I really was shocked at how low their membership fees are... It's telling on many levels.

With the people signing up to be Codeberg members today, it seems the fascist cunts attacking them are focussing their attack on the registration server now.

So you know exactly what they don’t want you to do and thus exactly what you need to do.

When you can, join Codeberg as a member of the organisation. Join me and hundreds of others in being part of it, supporting it financially and volunteering your skills, if you can, and having a vote in how it’s governed. Let’s grow its ranks.

Show the fucking fascists that when they poke us, we come back bigger and stronger.

donate.codeberg.org is also an option.
Donate to Codeberg!

@aral Thank you!

Can someone also please share some links to the best non-Codeberg sites to learn how to get started with Codeberg?

@aral although, is the website getting DDoS-ed right now ?

@Eltech Separate server; it’s doing fine at the moment.

@Eltech The Codeberg e.V. Registration Server is lookup up for me. Perhaps intermittent issues but mostly green?
@aral It's down for me, but I'll try again later and send a donation their way. That blog post was inspired, these are the kinds of people we need!
@aral I already have an account (is that the same as joining?) and will donate later (when it's possible to reach the sie again).
@TheTraveller Having an account is a good start. Joining the organisation is just that: you’re part of it. Basically, it’s a cooperative and you’re a member. You can vote, etc.
@aral maybe fastly can give them a hand (@devs)
@aral I don't plan to use anything else for my public projects :)

@aral Already there. Donating 100EUR a year. But to be honest, recently their service is worth more than that to me. Need to adapt.

Thanks Aral for the initiative. Organizing against fascism is more important than ever. But I don't see much happening in my region. We need this kind of movement on a larger scale. I see people who get scared by far right offensive behavior. And that's the fascist strategy: Make people scared. That stops working once we realize that we outnumber them by far.

@aral Joined  Managed to submit application form in the short timespan when registration server was briefly online.

I hope I'll be useful with my skills around relational databases  No more delay - time to contribute!

@aral Turns out making the international transfer from my US bank account is harder than it should be…

I’m committing to visiting my bank in person this afternoon to try to make it happen though @Codeberg.

@philip @Codeberg Thank you and sorry you have to go through all that hassle. I remember international transfers being not entirely straightforward when I was there.

@aral surprisingly I didn't know much about codeberg (I'm just a Linux enthusiast, not a programmer) and I'll definitely put a few hours this weekend to move my stuff there.

Hopefully I'm not alone in this situation and codeberg will leave bigger and stronger because of this!

@aral #Codeberg and #Forgejo are absolute jewels. If you care about #opensource, #federation, #selfhosting, or just want a low maintenance, high quality #git based experience, I highly recommend them.

#programming #DevOps

@aral managed to squeeze in and register both an account and as a supporter, but it took me a few tries. Thanks for pointing this out!

i did… last year
liza sabater - Codeberg.org - https://codeberg.org/blogdiva

it’s time that i start using it.

liza sabater

Codeberg is a non-profit, community-led organization that aims to help free and open source projects prosper by giving them a safe and friendly home.

@aral

Thanks for pointing, I should have done that already.

Membership closed, now will share this post on slack channels...

@aral Joined last year, to host a couple very small things. I’m sad/angry they’re being targeted, but glad the choice I made matches my values.
@aral This is a great way to offset money paid to @protonprivacy
@aral still all down... 😠
@douwe Registration server looks to be up now :)
@aral If you use #Codeberg (or not, but still are willing to help), please consider supporting Codeberg financially: https://donate.codeberg.org
Donate to Codeberg!

@adam_wysokinski Yep. And while one-time donations are great, the path to sustainability is through memberships, so please consider becoming a member and supporting them with ongoing funds and having the right to vote on issues, etc. :)
@aral I joined #Codeberg some time ago, but I have now convinced two colleagues who have joined Codeberg today.
@af Yay! And, if they can, do let them know that – unlike GitHub – they can actually become a member of the organisation itself to support it and have a say in how it is run. Not something you can do easily with Microsoft ;)
@aral today is definitely a great day to donate to Codeberg 💪
Done, with company match.
@jsoriano Much appreciated, thank you :) 💕
@aral It took a couple tries to get the ball through the hoop on Liberapay, but I got it done. I've been interested to move some projects out of Microsoft® GitHub® for quite some time. Thanks for the call to action.
@jlamoree Awesome, thank you :) 💕

@aral
Do you happen to know whether there's an operational or administrative overhead for unregistered recurring transfers or SEPA funding memberships?
