@atpfm @marcoarment
Marco (and Casey?) should watch at least one episode of Star Trek TOS, demonstrating the shipboard computer working entirely on voice command.
(I think we—myself included—may be overestimating Marco's and Cassie's tolerance for watching vintage sci-fi films.)
@atpfm The One with the Whales is the first Trek I ever saw. A very worn out taped off TV VHS...
Looking forward to the eventually inevitable DS9 watch through podcast. 🤣
@atpfm @marcoarment Were you inspired by “Hello, Computer!”?
I am so excited to listen to this!
@biggsjm @atpfm @marcoarment ehhh sometimes you want to show the *one* part that is palatable to a non-fan, or should I say, never-gonna-be-a-fan. For the humourous + relatable content, this movie is fine.
Wrath of Khan, on the other hand? @caseyliss sorry pal, that’s a hard pill to swallow, hard in the 1980s and even harder in the CG era. Only the first two Chris Pine movies were “mainstream” in a certain way (and if you like Fast & Furious, the third one). And the last 10 years of TV series is a dystopian graft onto utopia, but that’s another rant …
The one American scifi series that *might* be considered mainstream was, weirdly, Stargate — or Space Macguyver. X-Files probably didn’t count since it’s more of a thriller genre?
What I’m saying is I think I’m impartial because I’m not a Star Trek fan, just a casual viewer who’s seen most of some series; but moreover, in the show where I really am a fan, I have DIFFERENT recommendations for “the one perfect episode” that you give to a non-fan you’re trying to convert (e.g., “Blink”) versus giving to a non-fan who’s gotta sit with you and never going to do that twice (e.g. 50th anniversary movie episode).
And when you rewind to classic eras like 1980s, it gets VERY dicey and you have to be super careful — acquired tastes strongly apply! Then you’ve got 1960s where B&W (black and white) episodes exist for shows like Lost in Space and Doctor Who.
I’m adamant that what you NEVER do is insist someone start at the beginning. Even Star Trek TNG has a better jump-on point of season 3’s opener, and most fans admit season 1 is weird.
Oddly, the prequel series (2001-2004) with Scott Bacula is easier to watch, the less of a fan you are. I went into it just thinking of it as NASA employees who turned into “American Tourists in Space”. It kinda works, within its original strategy. But it didn’t get any ratings because … UPN etc.
@biggsjm @atpfm @marcoarment @caseyliss Wow! Since I wrote that, this perfect YouTube guide has come out — what are the right jumping on points to suggest?
Of course, you could just watch Seth Macfarlane’s “The Orville” TV show instead, if you’d rather have a comedy or satire that is self-aware of how nerdy things can look for outsiders. Or the movie “Galaxy Quest” — in both cases they are respected by Trek fans as pastiches rather than parodies.
And a welcome distraction from all the terrible news being created by the new administration.
I’m surprised no one mentioned Galaxy Quest as a possible future “Star Trek” movie club episode.
@atpfm @marcoarment @caseyliss Now *that’s* entertainment.
It’s like someone’s never seen a Marvel movie and show them Thor: Ragnarok first!
@pixelscience @atpfm @caseyliss The first (and, so far, only) Marvel movie I've seen is Avengers: Infinity War.
It was indeed very weird to start there.
@atpfm The joke about the spaceship in the park was that everyone was on drugs of some sort, and no one would notice (supposed to be near Haight & Ashbury, but was filmed in LA). Always thought they should put some footprints in the park as a low-cost monument.
Starfleet HQ is where Ft Baker is, across the bridge in Marin, not SF.
I think the debut double episode of TNG, Encounter At Farpoint, would be a good next step.
@moofie @atpfm @[email protected]
Maybe in a future special, they can watch a double feature of the TOS episode that introduced Khan followed by The Wrath of Khan.
@atpfm (haven't listened to the whole thing, so not sure if you mention, but)
The Cetacean Institute was mostly shot on location at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is an absolutely world class institution! Well worth the visit if you like that sort of thing (~2 hour drive south from Bay Area).
You can see the area that the movie CGId in the whale tank (1st picture).
Double trivia, it's my (now) wife's favorite place in the world, so it's where we got engaged! Right in front of the big tank.
@atpfm great episode!!
Comedy suggestion: Monty Python & the Holy Grail (if @marcoarment hasn’t already seen it)
Adam Sandler suggestion: Punch Drunk Love
@marcoarment @atpfm I know you said you’re doing it in the wrong order for introducing someone to Trek. While that’s true chronologically, I think Trek IV as well as First Contact are great, entry-level movies for first timers.
They both benefit, due to the time travel mechanic, of having a character from the past unfamiliar with starfleet and the federation to ask questions and have everything explained to them.
They are lore heavy but have plenty of guard rails.
@atpfm @marcoarment @siracusa @caseyliss
This member special presents a real problem for me, because I always watch the movie before listening to ATP Movie Club, but I also always watch movies in order and never start with a sequel.
So, in order to listen to this I need to make time to watch the first four Star Trek Movies.
@atpfm @marcoarment @caseyliss @siracusa
Well double dumbass on all three of you!
@atpfm I can't believe you didn't suggest watching the the single best Star Trek movie: https://david.reviews/movies/galaxy-quest-1999/
Also, speaking of early 2000s comedies, Zoolander holds up remarkably well! We just watched it and there's like, 2 lines in the 90 minute movie you wouldn't write today. Everything else was still great. Not that you should movie club that, but some of them are still worth watching!
@tcb Could watch just this one.
If you have time for:
1: Wrath of Khan
2: Wrath of Khan & Search for Spock
3: All of them, obviously.
