It's to be expected that Pooka should be angry when his fundamentalist, knee-jerk, stupidly stereotypical, antitheist prejudice against religious people is contradicted by reality. The "culture of contempt" is alive and well in his comment.
Speaking as a bog standard atheist. I'd rather spend time with someone like Bishop Budde.
Freedom is slavery
Love is hate
War is peace
And
Empathy is a sin
I sometimes wonder if they will ever try to redefine MLK as a white guy.
@charvaka @wellingtonrock Oh come on now. Like they'd listen to that dirty brown hippy antifa commie jew who spent all his time with a bunch of guys. He's probably gay and Judas sold him out over a lover's spat.
... And I'd bet anything that's how they'd describe him.
@wellingtonrock If being "Christ-like" is basically "being a good person in general" then most of the atheists I've known are pretty damned Christ-like. Many self-proclaimed "Christians?"
Not so much.
Reasonable people can agree on some basic things like "treat others as you would want to be treated." The folks pillorying the bishop for espousing these principles publicly are not being reasonable. The country will be turned into a big screaming school board meeting if they have their way.
Christian version:
Some people believe they worship God when, in fact, they worship the Devil.
They are not so hard to distinguish: the real test is to look at what they do and check if it follows the 'do to others as you would have them do to you' rule.
Those are the distinguishing marks of a real christian.
Superhero version:
Some people believe they are superheroes when, in fact, they are truly the most despicable villains.
They are not so hard to distinguish: check if it they respect other people, and always give them a fair treatment and try to help them when in need, no matter who they are.
That's the litmus test of a real superhero.
@wellingtonrock Thank you for letting me know. What she was asking should be considered simple and basic, not controversial and brave.
I keep thinking about how Trump rose to prominence at all on the lie of Obama being a foreign national, and how hateful men like that have been allowed to claim the similarly and demonstrably false narrative that they are the advocates of the Christian faith and its principles. It upsets me, a lot.
I am very SORRY to hear that!
It's shameful on her to excuse Genocide.

The critical post with citations is from Abunimah, who's language is not neutral but I think his analysis is correct

@wellingtonrock
There aren't many christians left in the US.
In reality we have imposters that have appropriated and twisted Jesus's real message for their own hate and political gain.
I've seen good people lose their way to it and become someone I don't even recognize.
As a Christ follower I'm trying to fight against it. I'm trying to get people to see this isn't what Jesus wants, it's not who He is.
A great satisfaction of #Atheism is the realization that you really ARE a moral person, and you don’t need to be threatened with Hell or God’s wrath or whatever to do what’s right.
As this observation demonstrates.
@wellingtonrock Atheist here but christian in my early childhood. Stories like the Good Samaritan and the Penitent Thief (in which, Jesus, though he is suffering and dying listens to and comforts the man who shows true remorse for his crimes) were foundational to my idea of what a good person is.
When I see these sick sociopaths comparing Trump to Jesus it sickens me. I don't think they believe. They just know they can use faith as a lie for doing their evil.
