@wellingtonrock FYI the #altText is incomplete: ‘When the Atheists are backing the bishop that speaks like Jesus and the "Christians" want her hung, you know something's up.’
@wellingtonrock I watched and read her words. As an atheist and albeit anecdotal, I back her right to say what she said, but the content was stupid. This kind of talk is manipulative. The non-fundamentalist, "good" Christians need to get over themselves and this pet obsession with imaginary patriarchs, good words attributed accurately or not. This talk helps maintain authoritarianism, both real and imaginary!

@lednaBM @wellingtonrock

It's to be expected that Pooka should be angry when his fundamentalist, knee-jerk, stupidly stereotypical, antitheist prejudice against religious people is contradicted by reality. The "culture of contempt" is alive and well in his comment.

Speaking as a bog standard atheist. I'd rather spend time with someone like Bishop Budde.

@lednaBM @wellingtonrock Wow! Talk about contempt! This one (not including his handle, as he won't see it) has earned a block from me.
@wellingtonrock Christians don't get to speak for atheists, fck this slippery creepy kind of speaking *for* people.
@wellingtonrock They aren't really Christians. Most sensible atheists agree with the rational things Jesus (probably) said.

Christianity Today Editor: Evangelicals Call Jesus “Liberal” and “Weak”

A former evangelical leader is sounding the alarm about the direction his religion is headed in.

The New Republic
@wellingtonrock just, I wouldn't equate Christians and American Evangelicals. Seriously.
@wellingtonrock I'm a Wiccan and I love that sermon that Rev Marion Budde Edgar gave she is a shining light in the darkness
@wellingtonrock If Jesus of Nazareth were around, he'd say the same things the bishop said, with more fervor. And the bigots listening to him would react with more rage because he ain't white.
@charvaka @wellingtonrock Noooo, Jesus wasn't a Middle Eastern Jew, he was a white, Anglo-Saxon.

@shanesemler @wellingtonrock

I sometimes wonder if they will ever try to redefine MLK as a white guy.

@charvaka @shanesemler @wellingtonrock They have been trying to redefine him as a Republican.
@charvaka @wellingtonrock Either that or they will call him a terrorist.
@charvaka @wellingtonrock and now we understand why people were so quick to have Jesus condemned

@charvaka @wellingtonrock Oh come on now. Like they'd listen to that dirty brown hippy antifa commie jew who spent all his time with a bunch of guys. He's probably gay and Judas sold him out over a lover's spat.

... And I'd bet anything that's how they'd describe him.

@wellingtonrock If being "Christ-like" is basically "being a good person in general" then most of the atheists I've known are pretty damned Christ-like. Many self-proclaimed "Christians?"

Not so much.

Reasonable people can agree on some basic things like "treat others as you would want to be treated." The folks pillorying the bishop for espousing these principles publicly are not being reasonable. The country will be turned into a big screaming school board meeting if they have their way.

@wellingtonrock

Christian version:

Some people believe they worship God when, in fact, they worship the Devil.

They are not so hard to distinguish: the real test is to look at what they do and check if it follows the 'do to others as you would have them do to you' rule.

Those are the distinguishing marks of a real christian.

Superhero version:

Some people believe they are superheroes when, in fact, they are truly the most despicable villains.

They are not so hard to distinguish: check if it they respect other people, and always give them a fair treatment and try to help them when in need, no matter who they are.

That's the litmus test of a real superhero.

@wellingtonrock I have been out of the loop. Who is she?
@OchotonidKnight
Anglican priest at US Nat'l Prayer s'v'ce asks tRump to be kind, have mercy on LGBTQ, Immigrants, Women, etc. He, of course, spat venom at her on 'Truth' Social.

@wellingtonrock Thank you for letting me know. What she was asking should be considered simple and basic, not controversial and brave.

I keep thinking about how Trump rose to prominence at all on the lie of Obama being a foreign national, and how hateful men like that have been allowed to claim the similarly and demonstrably false narrative that they are the advocates of the Christian faith and its principles. It upsets me, a lot.

@wellingtonrock just more evidence we live in an alternate universe and timeline...
@wellingtonrock Jesus, some people will really crucify you if you say something they don’t want to hear 🙏
@wellingtonrock you know, it was never about christianity, it was about controlling women.
@wellingtonrock After the attention Mariann Budde's speech got, it was a disappointing to find out that she is a Zionist, t.i. somebody arguing a state has the right to protect itself by colonizing and killing indigenous people.

@dani1

I am very SORRY to hear that!
It's shameful on her to excuse Genocide.

@wellingtonrock but then the "dani1" joined mastodon on Saturday and giving you "information" without any reference and background. Are you sure that his statement is true?
@fridrich You are right to question this reference. I based myself on a video talk with quotes from a writing of Budde. It was Budde's statement published on 11 Oct 2023. I would suggest you to read it yourself. If you would argue that on 11 October Budde, like a lot of people was too shocked to make a clear judgement of the situation, I would agree with you.

The critical post with citations is from Abunimah, who's language is not neutral but I think his analysis is correct

Joint Statement on Israel/Palestine

@wellingtonrock to be honest sometimes when people ask me if I haven an Idol, I say the person Jesus the bible is depicting. I mean yea there are some quirks like that he constantly has to prove himself in Johannes, but overall or especially in contrast to the times he was living in, the motivation was exceptional.
@wellingtonrock yeah because atheists have read the Bible: USA Christian’s think that is a book that give them privileges because they are white and their money: privileges like control over the land and the people

@wellingtonrock
There aren't many christians left in the US.

In reality we have imposters that have appropriated and twisted Jesus's real message for their own hate and political gain.

I've seen good people lose their way to it and become someone I don't even recognize.

As a Christ follower I'm trying to fight against it. I'm trying to get people to see this isn't what Jesus wants, it's not who He is.

@wellingtonrock

A great satisfaction of #Atheism is the realization that you really ARE a moral person, and you don’t need to be threatened with Hell or God’s wrath or whatever to do what’s right.

As this observation demonstrates.

#Religion

@wellingtonrock Atheist here but christian in my early childhood. Stories like the Good Samaritan and the Penitent Thief (in which, Jesus, though he is suffering and dying listens to and comforts the man who shows true remorse for his crimes) were foundational to my idea of what a good person is.

When I see these sick sociopaths comparing Trump to Jesus it sickens me. I don't think they believe. They just know they can use faith as a lie for doing their evil.

@wellingtonrock Following you, and thinking you should give tofu a try. Delicious with a pour of good eevo, dash of sea salt and generous truffle shavings. ( I’m sure it would be great, let me know).
@wellingtonrock
Not all Christians want her hung, but your point still stands.
@wellingtonrock consider the bishop supported by the Pagans as well.
