Just saw the headline "Elon Musk accused of making what appeared to be fascist salute" from CBC. Is mainstream journalism too cowardly to call a straight up, broad daylight nazi salute for what it is now? How can you still be in denial about it?

@Gargron CNN calls it "strange salute".

Yeah, they are all too afraid of retaliation

@skaverat @Gargron CNN is a paper tiger. Bought out by maga billionaire in 2021.
@skaverat @Gargron I think this is the more likely reason; the press could see themselves being sued over the statement, so they are coaching it, even if it obvious to them what it actually is.
@AT1ST @skaverat @Gargron CBC is the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, who pull punches on this stuff to placate the right wing as well.

@RowinSpeez @skaverat @Gargron I mean, they sound like the media entry being the *least* "Pulling their punches" on this, but admittedly they probably are likely trying to avoid an international lawsuit at this time.

Especially given recent statements by the Former President-Elect of the U.S.

@Gargron The oligarchs in America own the media and support the felon in chief and his cronies. They won’t say boo.
@Gargron I don’t know about in other countries but apparently here the states? Yes. Yes they are.
@Slamchez @Gargron Same here in Germany, where we should be *very* aware of what that means...
@ditsch42 @Gargron If anyone in Europe has paid any attention to what’s happened in our elections with Twitter take notes and call it out. Fine him if you have to. I would argue the same with Facebook

@Slamchez @Gargron
The only newspaper I read here given the news as

"Did Elon Musk made a Nazi salute in inauguration speech? - The images sparked controversy."

And the image is spot on with his arm extended completely.

News body discusses the salute is understood as Nazi salute, and cites a tweet from PatriotTakes.

So, they didn't tell it straight out, but they said that he did a Nazi salute.

I'm OK with this.

@Gargron i mean, i just watched hart aber fair, and there was a group of largely smart people there (and some afd bozo) trying to debate trump’s supposed plans, as divined from his impulsive and semi-coherent ramblings, and what potential good might come from them.
@Gargron In answer to your 1st question, "yes"
@Gargron
They're all cowards and traitors.
@Gargron I fully support you.
Mankind is stupid and history repeats itself, but we can only become a little less stupid when we realize we are repeating ourselves.
@Gargron yes. they fear retribution. with only so far that i've seen, wired and theguardian flat out calling it a nazi salute.

@Viss @Gargron

Even Rollingstone — headline refers to a straight arm salute, and the text to a Roman salute.

@Gargron I’m afraid you’re right. Both CDN and US media seem reluctant to call it what it is.
@prstebbi @Gargron
He loves his chilling effect lawsuits and can afford them easily.
@Gargron Fear and denial is how we got here.
@Gargron I just had a professor of journalism full out affirm his unshakable belief that there is a fundamental first amendment right TO SPREAD DISINFORMATION!!! He holds a prestigious chair at a well-known journalism school. THE FOURTH ESTATE IS ALREADY DEAD, FOLKS!
@opethminded @Gargron if there’s a fundamental right to lie then all fraud statutes are unconstitutional. A fundamental right can’t be superseded by a mere commercial interest.
@Gargron just watched the context (which I generally try to do) and yep, that's a heil if I ever saw one
@Gargron For some odd reason, even with the money mainstream journalism has behind them, they are still afraid of the orange Jabba the Hutt. They are cowards, plain and simple.
@Gargron The Anti-Defamation League's tweeted statement is... I'm not sure whether it's disappointing or chilling.
@virtuous_sloth @Gargron Chilling. It's chilling. ADL is not to be trusted.
@Gargron
That’s how our Quisling’s do it.
@Gargron That is indeed what happened.. it’s just bizarre

@stux @Gargron

And the ADL is trying to give him cover....

@GeoWend @stux @Gargron The tweet of the ADL that GeoWend referenced:
@Gargron Americans can't believe that it can happen here so they rationalize everything away.
@stinerman I wonder if thats true, or if this is specific to “the media”. I haven’t talked to many people, but I bet most saw it as a Nazi salute. @Gargron
@stinerman @Gargron A lot of them are Nazi supporters that are too brainwashed to admit it and even if they weren't brainwashed wouldn't care anyways

@stinerman @Gargron how though? I live in New Hampshire and we have a known Nazi cell out by Keane and Claremont. It’s not anything that’s deniable because they are loud and proud.

They come to the capital whenever there’s a drag queen at a coffee shop, last time they gathered to harass people their dear leader died suddenly afterwards. It was a whole thing because even some of the Nazis were celebrating that he was gone and then the other Nazis were mad about it.

@Gargron Unfortunately they’re scared of retaliation in the form of defamation lawsuits. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/12/14/trump-abc-stephanopoulos-settlement-00194391

@Gargron

Vichy is what Vichy does.

@Gargron It is not confusing and it is not unclear. Musk decided to go full NAZI for the world to see.
@Gargron Like Han Solo frozen in carbonite, they are ensconced in cowardice.

@Gargron They're afraid of retaliation.
@Gargron just deactivated my X acct for good!
@Gargron is history repeating itself? It started as a democracy back than as well. Are people forgetting what happend or is it just to long since, and the world wants a reset to chaos again? Just thinking.
@MursalinT @Gargron we are at the point where the original #nazis are something everyone knows only from stories. Some still from relatives that experienced that era first hand, but most only from school and movies.
The most forgotten facts? That #germany had been a #democracy before the take over, that #hitler was elected by the Reichstag, and that this was only possible due to others thinking he was harmless and forming a coalition with his party...
@MursalinT @Gargron Maybe Madison Square Garden was already booked.
@Gargron ...not surprised...they're all still active on the site.
@Gargron cowardly indeed. Doing the same crap they’ve been doing since 2015.
@Gargron the ADL is also defending him, so let's not pretend that it's just for-profit media, it's the whole machine from top to bottom. Bought and paid for.
@Gargron looks like their video clip only shows the first of the two salutes as well, making it easier to dismiss as 'accidental'. pretty damn disappointed
@Gargron “Corporations are people my friends”
@CardboardRobot @Gargron I love to say to people in my life when this comes up, if we consider corporations people for legal purposes, then for psychological purposes they're all sociopaths 😅
@Gargron To You, the People! Unfortunately, since 1993 article 16a of our constitution consists of more than one sentence and is hence almost unintelligible. But it was originally intended for situations such as now. https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_gg/englisch_gg.html#p0093
Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany

@Gargron Because they're in on it. He's daring them to say anything about it, secure in the knowledge they're all complicit or at least too gutless to say otherwise.

@Gargron

And the ADL is trying to pretend that what we can all see (twice) wasn’t what we saw, too.

Cowards and collaborators, all of them.

@Gargron

Following Alice Weidel's argument that Hitler was a communist, this wasn't a fascist, but communist salute (?)

Just thinking.

@mad @anlomedad @Gargron So from the perspective of the US, that's even worse? *scnr*

@fink @anlomedad @Gargron

Even better.

POTUS Musk is a "big fan of Putin".
