Hugely disappointing to see Andy Yen (Proton CEO) tout the Republican Party as the ones “standing up for the little guys” 🤢
@jonah
Indeed depressing. And factually wrong.
Why Big Tech deplatforming should be deeply disturbing for everyone, regardless of your politics | Proton

Big Tech monopolies have too much control over what can exist on the internet. To preserve democracy, we need to break these monopolies up.

Proton
@kevin There is literally no way Trump intends to go after Big Tech in any way that doesn’t directly benefit him. He’s not going to suddenly demand his oligarch buddies give up these platforms. Believing the Republicans on this is like trusting a wolf to oversee your sheep.

@j_s_j @kevin

Yup. That's why big tech are kissing Trump's ring, they know ring-kissing is the only thing Trump actually cares about.

Trump doesn't care about anything except people praising him and giving him money and power. There is never going to be a priniciple that Trump stands for, because he has no principles at all except his own self-gratification.

@kevin @jonah If someone wants to take a position against deplatforming on principal, cozying up to fascists is absolutely not the way to demonstrate that.

Fascists always have very loud temper tantrums when deplatformed, but what they care about is that **they** were deplatformed. They are really fucking eager to not only deplatform but legally restrict the speech of anyone not-fascist as part of eliminating dissent.

@jonah every douchebag techbro is just a douchebag techbro.
@jonah and he's factually right
@aureliuspublius including a fact at the end of a tweet does not make the entire tweet factually right, no
@jonah no that's not what makes it factually right. It's that he's right also about the Dem and Rep parties. Anyone should be able to see that and judging by the election results most do.
@aureliuspublius @jonah Yes the good cop is now the bad cop and vice versa. You are very smart
@SallyStrange @jonah policies and platforms change, it happens believe it or not. GOP is a totally different party than before Trump and the Democrats are unrecognizable from less than a generation ago.

@aureliuspublius @SallyStrange @jonah Identify which parts of the Project 2025 gameplan are going to be good for "the little guys".
Is it the deregulation of would-be monopolies?
The total destruction of the educational system?
Is it the insertion of politician's opinions into common medical scenarios?
Is it the plan to drive up the cost of living across the board with tariffs?
The plan to deregulate all pollution?
The elimination of safety standards?

You're wrong.

@aureliuspublius @jonah neither set of billionaire puppets are going to fuck you
@SallyStrange @jonah same to you, I guess? I don't see why you need to get angry over the most common differences of opinion people have nowadays. There are legitimate concerns fueling both sides, why is it so hard to see that?
@[email protected]
Man, idk, maybe because they've stated a clear policy intent to run a genocide against people like me? Fucking lol. You know sucking up won't save you, right?
@SallyStrange @jonah

@dymaxion @SallyStrange @jonah agreed, but please understand that the Democrats ran on “nobody is safe until everyone is safe” then the moment they won they ran a full on genocide campaign against people like me.

Medically vulnerable people are the largest marginalized group in America and both the parties have been trying to genocide us for five years now. After watching the Dems betray the largest marginalized group in America wasn’t even shocking that they turned their back on trans people? If they could give the finger to all of us, hurting a tiny portion of the population would be nothing to them.

@SallyStrange Oh, they are, but not in a consensual way. And @aureliuspublius won't like it at all.

@jonah

It's taking all of my willpower to not respond to this troll. O_O

CC: @[email protected] @[email protected]

@pkw @wonka lol you good

Yeah I thought about adding an edit to distinguish between the good vs bad fucking, but y'all knew what I meant

@SallyStrange @aureliuspublius @jonah unfortunately that’s exactly what they’re going to do but not in the fun way you mean, and it won’t matter that it’s not consensual.
@SallyStrange @aureliuspublius @jonah I wish, unfortunately now we just have two bad cops. There are no good cops, just too bad ones

@aureliuspublius @jonah no no see that’s the problem just because the Dems belong to the mega corporations doesn’t mean the Republicans fight for the people.

This just means the two capitalist parties are for the mega corporations and against the people.

@aureliuspublius nothing says standing up to big tech like throwing yourself a party funded by amazon, meta, google, and apple
@jonah Very disappointing indeed, and quite troubling 😔
@jonah Nothing screams "standing for a little guy" like a clusterfuck of billionaires talking about tax cuts for them and sacking of Medicare. Really...

@jonah

In general I found that privacy somehow became a right wing talking point. While it used to be a left wing thing.

Not sure how that happened.
But in that light it does make sense that a privacy focused product can have right wing leadership.

@koen @jonah
in short:

my guess is, rightwingers favor privacy rights because of some immoral or criminal activity, like tax evasion, money laundering or violence against minorities.

@jonah oh nooo, proton now feels dirty :(
@jonah Just another ultra wealthy turd in the GOP/Maga admin bowl.....

@jonah What a huge bummer. Was exploring and just about to sign up for Proton mail + calendar, but no more! I draw the line at approving fascism, let alone supporting it

Question is: why even weigh in here? What possible benefit could there be, knowing that you'll harm your business by aligning with authoritarians? Especially considering your whole deal is privacy / encryption to resist them

Just stupid business

@nathandh @jonah Yep, this blows a hole in my plans for this week. 🤷‍♀️
@nathandh @jonah because tech ceos tend to think that being good at one thing makes them smart about everything and are plagued by a need to show everyone that.

Confused

I was confused as at first considering his follow-up posts on X after this one. It seems his positive remarks were simply in response to the idea of taking on the big tech companies, factually correct or not. I wonder if Andy understands that the only reason Republicans went after bigtech was as revenge against those who didn’t fall in line.

@jonah Guess I'll have to start recommending mullvad over ProtonVPN alongside steering those away from Proton now that I know the Proton CEO believes that a convicted felon billionaire is standing up for the little guys
@lancercryptid @jonah Is NordVPN evil somehow?
@fuzzychef @lancercryptid @jonah I’d be surprised if it wasn’t a secret NSA front lol
Hacker Breached Servers Belonging to Multiple VPN Providers

Servers belonging to the NordVPN and TorGuard VPN companies were hacked and attackers stole and leaked the private keys associated with certificates used to secure their web servers and VPN configuration files.

BleepingComputer
@jonah years ago on The Bad Place i called them out for having "white men in circles" on their "who are we" page, and they kinda just shrugged. they haven't improved since then.
@jonah
@davidgerard here’s one potential answer to “why the fuck did proton turn into an AI and cryptocurrency company so fast”
@zzt @jonah he was apparently a crypto bro for many years
@jonah Proton has always been vaguely right-leaning; this doesn't surprise me at all
@jonah Time to dump Proton, I guess.
@wcbdata @jonah their loss is...what, Tuta's gain? Where do you think you'll land?
@john @jonah Not entirely sure tbh. Self-hosting is more than we can manage at the shop right now, but Google just seems antithetical to what we're doing.
@jonah from where is this? I can’t find it.
@jonah thanks. This is a bit embarrassing, a shame … Alright let’s find a new mail service for me and my company.
@jonah Gosh damn it. Guess I'll have to move on to... Mullvad VPN or IVPN? Mailbox.org or Tuta? ... Not a lot of choices left. 😅 -Luci
@jonah It's all horsepucky. Republicans are the party of, by, and for Billionaire Assholes. They have always been this pre-MAGA, and they will continue to be this now.
@jonah i think they have too much of my money. where do i go? fastmail? what else?
@mmby literally just learned about this: https://jawns.club/@skyfaller/113828343515899810

@[email protected] @[email protected] Fastmail may have a union, but they laid off 60% of the bargaining unit in the middle of contact negotiations: https://union.place/@fastmailunited/112672408714595554 So I don't know how much power the remaining union members have left, or whether I would cheer Fastmail. Ask @[email protected] I guess.
