@Gargron No because I never used those services to begin with. I have accounts but they're dormant and always have been.
@Gargron I still use FB authentication but haven't posted on it in years
@allanb Now is the time to delete then.
@Gargron not deleting yet as I admin too many groups. Following other group leaders into other spaces as they set them up, e.g. into Discord for group chats
@Kay @Gargron Discord is not better.

@dolmen As far as I'm aware, Discord doesn't own a big chunk of the entire online ad market and also doesn't try to collect and use all data they possibly can across different websites, apps and services. :)

Not saying they're good or anything, but Meta has been in its own category of evil for a while now with very few competitors in that regard. At least in the online/tech world.

@Kay

@Sven @dolmen @Kay People said the same about WhatsApp and Instagram: at least they weren’t Facebook. But they provide a centralised point of control that can be easily acquired. Meta could easily buy Discord and integrate all of the data that they’ve harvested.
@Sven @Kay Discord is evil in its own way. But the common thing is they are both private companies that run social network and that aims to make profit, while users are not paying directly for the service they get. They are walled garden where you don't have control of the content you posted, as they can change their usage policy at anytime and this applies retroactively to old content you may have posted 20 years ago.

@dolmen Fair criticisms of Discord.

Not really that relevant to my wish to stay connected to a positive community of people online. Very much a matter of less bad choices, not good ones.

@dolmen Totally true and I even acknowledged this in my reply. It's just a totally different discussion than the initially disputed statement. 😅

(Also, for what it's worth, their main source of income is from Nitro subscriptions, so there is some direct cash flow.)

@dolmen @Gargron I've yet to find a perfect platform that everyone will agree to join.

Is Discord less offensive than Facebook? Time will tell.

In this case I'm following a group that I find positive so I'm dialling down my sensitivity meter. I've left Discord and groups in the past over what I found to be tolerance of offensive content.

It's also easier to switch social media type platforms than mainstream media or even society in the real world. So much I'd change if I could!

@Kay @dolmen @Gargron

I recommend @matrix

But yeah, getting an entire group to agree and switch is very troublesome

@NoOnesRival @dolmen @Gargron @matrix As one member of the group of over 2,000 that the admin is encouraging to move, I'm not going to rock the boat.

Years back I co-moderated a Yahoo group. The other Admin wanted to try Facebook. I said no, poor security etc. She shifted the group anyway.

I joined Facebook to help her and the group. She decided I'd been right and left. By that time hundreds of members had shifted. I stuck with that group. I'm still moderating it about 15 years later.

@Kay @dolmen @Gargron For a chat type thing Matrix is pretty excellent. People don't even need an email address to join most servers. I do understand that getting non-techy people to switch to anything is a big ask though.
@dolmen @Kay @Gargron I'm reading that CounterSocial is first, followed by Mastodon, Spoutible, Tribel, not necessarily in that order after CounterSocial
@Gargron I’m in the process of deleting. Threads and Instagram are gone. Just waiting for my download to delete FB.
@Gargron ive already deleted whatsapp, never had threads. instagram i cant really get rid of because its the only place local music artists + activists post, and facebook is the only place around here with a decent second-hand market. the goal is definitely to delete them all, i just need other people to as well before it really makes sense.
@Gargron I want to. But everyone I know uses these things, keeping me stuck there. Its like if the water and electricity company suddenly became evil (well, in this case explicitly, unabashedly delighted to stop pretending to not be)
@rudantu @Gargron good analogy, because the water companies are indeed evil here too.

@rudantu @Gargron

Reminds me about Google dropping their motto/slogan #DontBeEvil

@Gargron never had accounts with them but definitely would delete them asap if I had
@Gargron i never had an account on any of these services
@Gargron I would (except possibly instagram) but a lot of work contacts are on there so realistically I can't.
@Gargron I did in 2016 after the Cambridge Analytica scandal
@jdotcom @Gargron same for me. I didn’t delete the account, but the apps haven’t been installed and I haven’t posted since then
@Gargron Does having exited 4 years ago because of the Cambridge Analytica scandal count?
@rose @Gargron
How many years?
@RnDanger @Gargron Since December 2020, so a little longer than 4 years.
@rose @Gargron
I guess i missed the sequel too 😅
Edit; sorry, I'm being glib but thank you for leaving that place

@Gargron Yes, but with a big Asterix.

I'm already exporting my FB data for my two "public" FB pages (one photography and one career) ahead of a likely walk-away, and I am looking hard at Friendica as a probable home.

My personal/private FB page, which is close friends and family, will likely remain as it unfortunately is the place for critical information-sharing between that group.

@NoRomBasic @Gargron [insert image of Asterix and Obelix with their sizes swapped here]

...Sorry, couldn't resist.

@Gargron it’s a hard call. My church and family responsibilities may require me to stay silently
@markrsmith this is the unfortunate reality, these services provide the various social connections for many folks...

@Gargron Yes, I requested the Facebook and Instgram information, and I just received the download today. I hardly used Instagram, and I limited my activities on Facebook, never allowing it to become the "Facebook of everything".

I was already disliking Facebook before the MAGA takeover. "Enshittification" is real. I saw serious problems all the way back to 2014 or so, before Trump began to ran, and the Tea Party was taking off, and so on. Managing Pages, groups, and even advertising got to be absolutely crazy, and burdensome. I started seeing serious issues with ads, and bona fide users or accounts, etc. especially when I was also managing a NationBuilder website, which gave me lots of insight between social media accounts, emails, duplicate accounts, phoney accounts, etc.

Over time, Facebook has been taking away our powers in several ways than one, and anyone who keeps investing in it, especially in terms of dollars, is foolish, in my opinion.

@Gargron I deleted my FB account when I saw things like this coming way back in 2009. I've never looked back.
@Gargron i would if whatsapp wasn't my only means of communication with my close cousin+a few other frens

there are circumstances that cause him to be unable to use signal or smth

@Gargron
My fb account had been dormant for a year, and I hadn't logged into it, so I deleted it entirely yesterday.

I sent messages to people I only contact on messenger that I actually care about talking to so they could find me elsewhere, and I'm deleting messenger at the end of next week.

@Gargron

And I say no...

Only because I've never had any of those accounts.

Can't delete what I've never had and never will have.

@Gargron No, but it just reinforced my thoughts on those platforms and my desire to limit my time with them.
@Gargron I would but I keep contact with people overseas, also admin a dog group that’s a kind community. Have visited people from that group in several countries. 🤷🏻‍♀️
@Gargron The 2012 election was the red line for me. Not long after, in early 2013, I said goodbye for good. Never had a threads, WhatsApp or IG account.

@paul @Gargron

I only ever set up a WhatsApp to stop scammers from setting one up for me.

I need to finally delete my meta profiles. Reach out to those I will actually miss and let them be.

@Gargron I’m giving it a trial run having the apps uninstalled to see how it feels. Facebook is easier, I have some genuine connections on Instagram which could be difficult to sustain outside of that context but that’s how I felt about Twitter and I shut that down last year so
@Gargron A couple branches of my family and a music jam club are on Meta properties. Letting go would be very painful.
@timbray @Gargron I totally hear you -- but they also got you right where they want you, don't they? No escape. No way out.

@timbray @Gargron definitely feel like EU is leading the way on this one
@timbray @Gargron Immigrant to the other side of the world here. Keeping up with the entire extended family back there would be near impossible without FB. Many extended family members also spread out worldwide. FB keeps us all in contact, seeing how we age, how our kids are growing up, remembering loved ones now gone, celebrating milestones, etc. It’s possible to do this for close family without FB (and we do!), but not for hundreds-strong extended family. So I will stay.
Similar for WhatsApp. My sister lives in a country that blocks Facetime! So WhatsApp it is.
@leoncowle @timbray @Gargron
I moved to Switzerland from Seattle 20 years ago, and I have way too many friends and family members on FB to leave it. I would love to somehow move elsewhere, but at FB I am locked in, and it's where I have to stay. While Mastodon, and to some degree, Bsky are replacing Twitter, they are not close to being a replacement for FB.
@timbray @Gargron I left those services 10 years ago and yes, I am missing out on stuff (some of it nonsense). To help with that, I have to make more of an effort to reach out to folks directly or in groups. Feels like quality over quantity but YMMV.
@Gargron I deleted mine nearly a decade ago. Glad others are doing the same finally. 🖖
