How TF is Mastodon outtweeting Twitter.

Elon Musk paying $44 billion for Twitter and crashing the car so badly he gets owned by a service run by unpaid furries, cat people and a cartoon porg
@GossiTheDog That's because unlike Melon, a catgirl knows how to herd cats.
@GossiTheDog OTOH, he has leveraged the bully pulpit that owning that platform has provided him into electing the USA government he favoured and now plays a key role is setting policy for USA. Particularly given that much of the $4e10 was provided by others, I'd say that there is unlikely to be substantial buyer's regret.
@GossiTheDog sometimes I wonder whether the stuff he got with the purchase (like the de-facto US presidency) don’t out value the 44 billion in the long run

@pilif well... Story's not done yet. That the next US government will be good for anyone on the long run I believe to be unlikely. There is such a thing as winning yourself into a loss: They might get everything they believe they want, but what they'll get as a consequence is an isolated nation ridden by poverty and crime, ruled by a few oligarchs. A situation in which everyone loses, just as in ex-Soviet states.

Quite strange that it's come to this. I did have the feeling that the US is on the decline since 9/11 though. All in all, they lost the war. Two fallen towers caused them to lose their head, openly start wars of aggression, openly torture without regret or apology, alienate their Western allies and more. Sure, it was a tragedy. But it was nothing compared to real wars. As soon as they got attacked at home they turned from the friendly Capitalist next-door to the brutal wannabe world dominator. As Trump'd say: Sad!

This is just another chapter in that inevitable downfall.

@pilif I just hope, just with Nazi-Germany, in the end a lesson will be learned and a better system will emerge from the ruins. Lets hope it does not take a toll as high as with my country.
@GossiTheDog thanks for this post, I laughed out loud!
@GossiTheDog even if the purchase made no difference to the election, enough ppl think it did that he got a payoff. If things being him and Trump get a bit ‘Russian’, then there might be buyers remorse, albeit briefly.
@GossiTheDog the whole Internet runs on furries, cat people and the like 🙃.
@GossiTheDog I fear "hardworking unpaid furry" will be idea very close to Mr. Musk's heart (if there is such thing)
@GossiTheDog with a crash that bad, he must have engaged FSD
@GossiTheDog you said the funny IT words on the nerd network, that's how
@GossiTheDog Who's even still on Vichy Twitter, at this point? ;)
@GossiTheDog not WinServer 2008R2?
@JmbFountain @GossiTheDog naa.. its WinServer 2003.
@tortoc @GossiTheDog true. I was shocked to see that ESM for Ubuntu 14.04 only ended in April 2024
@GossiTheDog This is making me both angry and sad at the same time.
@GossiTheDog Yeah, as long as the OWASP top 10 look like they do at the moment, it's save to say we have bigger problems 😂
@GossiTheDog
Deploying an AI thing was impetus for an organisation I work with to get an independent security audit. A lot of things were found and fixed that were in preexisting workflows unrelated to AI. 'Russian AI zero days' are a great excuse to fix all the things needing fixing.
@noodle @GossiTheDog I mean, sometimes. A lot of times when the C-suite gets hung up on The Next Big Thing they will just pour money into that instead of basic stuff like vulnerability management

@MisuseCase @noodle @GossiTheDog

The trick is to phrase the stuff you really need as part of the plan to adopt the Next Big Thing. "Those AI zero days target unpatched servers, so we need to upgrade those ASAP."

@suetanvil @noodle @GossiTheDog Hm, how can I spin this into getting my org to do proper vulnerability management?….

@noodle anytime the c-suite feels moved to do something other than adding more shiny objects on the website and more high bandwidth auto playing video that'll just drive down user retention, I count that as a win.

CEO asked me "what are we doing about Russians
exploiting Odays in Al" Meanwhile our servers are on Ubuntu 14, our SRE team quit, IT is pasting bash scripts into the JAMF editor untested, and the CFO has a 2-star chrome
extension to make gmail's font comic sans

@GossiTheDog wait, is this an issue?

I have a server running Ubuntu 14... that's alright surely? It said LTS on it when I installed it.

@GossiTheDog actually, it's OK... I checked, it's a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS so this is good... obviously Ubuntu 14 would be bad, but 12 is a good vintage.

@dee @GossiTheDog didn't support for that end 7 years ago? 💀

From what I can tell even LTS releases are only supported for 5 years 😅

@hazelnot @GossiTheDog what does it even mean to be "supported" is a good philosophical question.

it's OK, this isn't a critical component in my little infrastructure... I've multiple copies of the same machine for resilience

@dee @GossiTheDog idk, I usually take it to mean "you should stop using this cause you can't get any updates for it anymore so it's unsafe and if you ask for help we'll just tell you to fuck off" lol
@hazelnot @GossiTheDog this is what a well configured firewall is for 😆

@dee @GossiTheDog fair, the only thing I know how to do with a firewall is allow ports like on a router 🤷‍♀️

I don't really appreciate the emojis implying you're laughing at me for not knowing as much as you about the topic and asking a genuine question though so maybe we should just end this conversation here >.>

@hazelnot @GossiTheDog not laughing at you... laughing at myself for truly running old servers in production and overly relying on primitive firewalls for protection.

❤️

@hazelnot @dee @GossiTheDog If you want to pay Canonical money, they'll support an LTS system for up to 12 years. Worth noting that they extended this from 10 years earlier this year to allow 14.04 to still be supported.

@puck @hazelnot @GossiTheDog I'm still at the limit 😂😢

I can't upgrade though, I'm running a version of python from 2012, and a version of Django from 2012 👍

@dee @hazelnot @GossiTheDog oh, yeah, I know that pain as well.
@hazelnot @dee @GossiTheDog
At least 12.04 ships with a kernel newer than 2.4.
I see stuff manufactured and shipped in 2024 with that on occasion.
@GossiTheDog why do you need a chrome extension to make the font comic sans who hurt this CFO
@GossiTheDog If I wanted to do that, I would set the font in a desktop mail client.
@CauseOfBSOD @GossiTheDog they're a CFO, don't expect them to know how to configure their browser.

@FeralRobots @GossiTheDog also id be interested to see the actual extension file (they are relatively easy to decompress, and then its just javascript files + a manifest + some other types of web resources for config pages, to inject into sites (html, css, images, font files, basically any other type of web resource you can name) + extension icons

would be interesting to see if it does more than what it claims

@CauseOfBSOD @FeralRobots @GossiTheDog If it doesn't have approval, it needs to go anyway. If the CFO thinks he wants that approval, charge it to his cost center.

What the heck is a 0day in AI

@GossiTheDog The IT Department supports Linux???

Someone buy those guys beers. That is NOT done. Usually they barely support Windows.

@GossiTheDog CFO thing is hilarious 🤣

@GossiTheDog

I bet that a LOT of people reading this feel seen.

@GossiTheDog

You missed your chance to get more funding.

@GossiTheDog @stux

Devils advocate not requested but…

Could dyslexia be behind a preference for comic sans?

@GossiTheDog And we invite some obscure "AI" into our internal calls to create sumeries.
@taseroth @GossiTheDog recently someone did on a video call I had. It felt very strange, normally one page of notes is good enough for a two hours call... And that one was just getting back and assuring each other yes we are going to do what we said we are going to do, everything is going fine.
The platform sent me a link with the supposed summary, I didn't open it; maybe I should, I'm a little bit curious of what it wrote down.
@GossiTheDog "We're giving them all the help we can, boss!"
@GossiTheDog
Yeah but that other stuff sounds boring and costly to fix. I wanna know about the AI Russians!
