📢 Vivaldi Social has never been an experiment!

Hosting our own instance is one of our efforts in the fight for a better web.

Actions speak louder than words, but in case you needed some reassurance today: we’re here for the long run.

@Vivaldi In the same way I suggested @tagesschau @NDR folks to write an article about their experience in the fediverse, similarly to what @dw_innovation already did, it could be great to read @Vivaldi communication team also writing about their experience.

Both ARD and Deutsch Welle shared several positive cases. Observing Vivaldi's work here and their statement that they are here to stay, it could be inspiring to other organizations and communication teams. The challenges you have would also be important.

@Vivaldi I've been using Zen since there are extensions I use that don't want to go for MV3 (LibRedirect if you're wondering). Vivaldi is still my backup tho.

Genuinely, though, thank you for what you do and sticking with your principles where Mozilla hasn't.

@Flaky @Vivaldi I've been using Zen too, as I'm a heavy user of both workspaces and containers, and that gives me both - but I'm liking the ability to switch profiles in Vivaldi as a replacement for the latter. I think Vivaldi also announced they would resist MV3, but I could be wrong.

@MediaActivist @Vivaldi I've heard something but I'm not sure either. I think the issue is maintaining the Chromium codebase for something like that.

Firefox funnily enough has a similar problem, which is why Firefox gets forked directly and people aren't just embedding Gecko into the browser.

This was probably why Mozilla started Servo, but we know what happened there...

@Flaky @Vivaldi That makes sense. And I'm impressed with the Servo project more as it stands today! I'm hopeful.
@MediaActivist @Vivaldi Yup! It's got a ways to go, still, but nonetheless I'm glad it's around and independent from Mozilla now, especially with how Mozilla's been acting lately.

@Vivaldi

Does your fight for better web include open-sourcing your browser?

@Vivaldi cheers! Glad you're sticking around.
@Vivaldi Vivaldi is an amazing browser and I'll happily and fully support it when you rebase off of Chromium. Mastodon instance or no Mastodon instance, doesn't matter.
@macberg @Vivaldi why what's wrong with chromium
@ben @macberg @Vivaldi Because, at the end of the day, you're still using google and giving them a % of web usage, so companies (even Microsoft) stop working on alternatives and we end with only one solution.
And, will you trust Google to not mess with chromium in the future? I wouldn't.
@Vivaldi And that's one reason why I am moving away from Firefox and using Vivaldi.
@Vivaldi You say you want a better web and you have a closed-source browser based on chrome
@Vivaldi OK then - if openness is not an experiment for you, why is your browser still partially closed source?
@Vivaldi I realy need to check if Vivaldi can be my new Browser. I'll see how accessible it is using a ScreenReader.
@Vivaldi No one using vivaldi lil bro, chromium lol

@Vivaldi The argument that Vivaldi is closed and therefore not trustworthy is understandable. But... The argument that it is not because it is based on Chromium is childish, too idealistic. Projects like Ungoogled Chromium, Bromite, Cromite, have shown that a freer Chromium is possible.

Child idealism does nothing for a better Internet, only hinders good projects to progress

@nubesurrealista @Vivaldi The replies are so cliche, I can predict what vocal fediverse group would be proclaiming. At least, this thread didn't go to shit just yet with claims like "not firefox = unworthy"...
@Vivaldi yo how many users do you have now? it's been up for a while right?
@Vivaldi On Vivaldi Social. There are emojis for    ... But I can't find for #KDE
