Actually, I believe the quote was debunked. T**** typically (as he always does) refused to pick a side and called himself an "Independent" for years.
#TheBirtherKing frequented #RNC Conventions (including McCain's in 2008), and IIRC in 2000, people asked him about running back then, but he declined.
It wasn't until #Obama made fun of him at the WH Corospondent's Dinner in 2010 that his wounded ego convinced him to run.
