Damn. YouTube now requires an account to view videos. It says, "Sign in to confirm that you're not a bot". Suppose I logged in to Gmail with no issues. This is what AI is doing. Every platform is getting closed source.
@nixCraft good thing bots can't make accounts otherwise this would be really stupid

@StaticR @nixCraft idk, maybe they're suspecting bots for increased views for channels to monetize at the end.

Lame excuse, but ok google šŸ™„

@nixCraft RIP Newpipe and Freetube 2019-2024 😭

EDIT: Newpipe still works... Somehow.

@Talon1024 @nixCraft NOOOOOOO I LOVE NEWPIPE
@georgia @nixCraft @Talon1024 it depends on your IP address. If YouTube requires your IP address to sign in, new pipe won't work (as don't work opening your video in incognito mode).

Looks like many Hetzner and DigitalOcean IP addresses (if not all) are affected.

Interesting that if you start video in New pipe and then immediately enable VPN it will continue playing ir.
@georgia @Talon1024 @nixCraft I guess the only way to mitigate it is to create a FOSS YouTube app that will implement account login (like it works now with aurora store).
@yura @nixCraft @georgia @Talon1024
Unless it implements anonymous login similar to Aurora it is useless. Yeah I get that the big part of newpipe is that I get to watch what I want not what YouTube wants me to watch. But once you login with your own account google still gets all of your video preferences and all other good data they want.

@Talon1024 @nixCraft NewPipe and Freetube still work, since this is still being rolled out.

Freetube also uses Innertube, so it might be more resilient than NewPipe, which scrapes webpages

@Talon1024 @nixCraft They both work? I remember a forked version of newpipe with sponsorblock got shut down, but you can still use newpipe.

@Talon1024 @nixCraft both #NewPipe and #Tubular work, from this part of the planet, so the circumvention routines are still safe

#Android #OpenSource #POSIX #Google #programming #Alphabet #War

@nixCraft Shows how confident Google are of their own "is this a human or a bit" recaptcha system.
@nixCraft Work fine there with Freetube.
@nixCraft YouTube is basically unwatchable anyway these days

@nixCraft Serious melt down from my 38 year old severely autistic adult son in 3, 2, 1......

Seriously, if you are logged in, you can see adult content. I really don't want him to have a login!

@nixCraft (╯°▔°)╯︵ ┻━┻
@nixCraft works for me, this is Firefox focus incognito browser and no login/cookie. Can search and see what I want, just do not have history.
@nixCraft the audacity of this next to them scraping everything on the web to power their AI is breathtaking

@nixCraft Go #invidious

It's having some issues the last couple of days but šŸ¤ž it'll be fine again https://docs.invidious.io/instances/

Invidious Instances - Invidious Documentation

The official Invidious documentation

@nixCraft if the measure is to "protect" the community, how does watching/downloading a video "harm" the community?

@nixCraft

Interesting, maybe this is an only-US thing?

I can access YouTube without login from the mobile browser (fennec f-droid), even with ublock.

@nixCraft I have been getting this on my phone (firefox nightly on graphoneOS) for a while now, but *for now* it still will play videos on my computer with no account.
@nixCraft https://freetubeapp.io/ Works and doesn't require an account plus sponsor block is implemented
FreeTube - The Private YouTube Client

FreeTube is a feature-rich and user-friendly YouTube client with a focus on privacy.

@nixCraft same, its been like 3 days since every Piped provider have been knocked out. Not even new uploads can be seen, local subscriptions list is knocked out as well. Frankly, I am still able to ytdl my way through this, no issues whatsoever, bulk download the crap out of them and watch offline with no buffering, ads, and with favourite’s player keybinds.
@nixCraft I've always been curious how piped and invidious work. How are they able to circumvent this restriction?
@nixCraft I agree… this is a concerning trend towards proprietary design that I think, whether we like it or not, has to do with our mainstream (yet somewhat involuntary) acceptance of the way this proprietary technology works. Whether it be YouTube forcing us to make a choice between our privacy or exposure to new information, or rightsholders’ abilities to withhold paid media at any time & for any reason, I think there’s a new clear shift in the power dynamic between people and information.
@nixCraft I've basically abandoned YouTube as it's full of garbage videos and becoming more and more locked down every single day. To hell with it.
