@SuperSelena64 Nowadays I find it more fun to tinker than to play
@SuperSelena64 repairing them is part of the game!

@SuperSelena64 I feel like mine is going to be the opposite lol:
- 2024: "Hey those retro computers are pretty cool! I'd like to try them out"
- "OK but what should I actually *do* on the retro computers?"
- "I guess I should get into video games"

My parents didn't want me playing video games when I was a kid, and then I never ended up getting into them as an adult, but I sure do think old computers/electronics are cool

@SuperSelena64 exactly my linux gaming story
@SuperSelena64 Looks like you've also got some good drawing skills as well as your repair ones.

@SuperSelena64

I switched from Minecraft to SpaceChem to Rust (not the game).

The puzzles are way more complicated and satisfying now. And I can choose and create my own riddles.

And my creations last longer and have an impact on the real world. Not only on some pixels on the screen.

@SuperSelena64 My dad's Colecovision is still kicking around here somewhere, I might try to plug it in one day but yeah, I would be pretty shocked if the caps are not all shot to hell 🫠
@SuperSelena64 are you having fun
@alilly haha, yes 😁
I do enjoy the tinkering too!

@SuperSelena64 then it's all good!

this is my reaction to people who are confused why I use fiddly software…

@SuperSelena64 but didn’t you know the job would be dangerous when you took it ?
@SuperSelena64 me and windows xp era thinkpads......

@SuperSelena64 but now you're a professional on electronics and you can help others on repairing their stuff :)
@SuperSelena64
As I sit in the Hackspace with the laser cutter going in front of me and the 3d printer going behind me... yyyeeeeaaaahhhhh, feeling this.
@SuperSelena64 just the other day I was thinking about how there was a time when getting into retro did not necessarily involve learning about aging capacitors!
@SuperSelena64 I went down the same road with guitar pedals. "Give a woman a fuzz and she'll jam for a day. Teach a woman to build a fuzz and she'll never jam again."
@SuperSelena64 clearly not about the games, but about restoration.
@SuperSelena64 establishing the means to play games > playing games
@SuperSelena64 Me, checking each panel for a TurboGrafx-16, with or without CD expansion attachment. And now it occurs to me that it is the only console/portable system that I never opened up the case to mod or repair. I wonder if mine still works...
@log I have a gear in my TGCD I need to replace 😅
@SuperSelena64 how does one learn to repair electronics on their own?
@SuperSelena64 Yeah, that happens to some of us.
@SuperSelena64 this hits very hard and yet it’s totally worth it.
@SuperSelena64
Digital decay is a thing, part what defined culture in 1985-2005 becomes exponentially hard to reproduce 😔 It's cool that you keep it alive though. With games now requiring time limited cloud servers to run, another Achilles heel is introduced, even if hardware would be available, the auth servers would be scrapped
@bencardoen it's true, but we (the community) have been doing a good job scraping servers to make archival versions and reverse engineering the authentication checks.
Some examples I've used are the Hawken servers, Pretendo for the WiiU, Dreamcast Live, or even the servers that allow the Ouya to log in again!
@SuperSelena64
I didn't know that, that's wonderful, thank you!

@SuperSelena64 @bencardoen

I think FPGA's help a lot as well, making it possible to create "new" versions of old hardware, like the SuperNT.

@SuperSelena64
Could you share a landing page or github org (or multiple) where this can be found? I know a few people that'd be very happy to hear about it

@bencardoen
The new Hawken authentication service:

Pretendo for WiiU (and 3DS):

Dreamcast Live:

My article about getting your Ouya back online:

Insignia, the original Xbox Live replacement:

Riiconnect24 for reactivating Wii online services:

These are just the ones off the top of my head, I'm sure there's many I've forgotten - but the point is servers going down is no longer a major barrier.

@SuperSelena64 note to self: find a good soldering tutorial
@SuperSelena64 Sadly, relatable concept!
@SuperSelena64 i collect a little bit, but definitely prefer playing via emulation. I like to tinker but not maintain
@SuperSelena64 Hey, at least you're not doing fullset collections and not playing the games, which is the stupid version of collecting retro consoles, modding and fixing them...

@SuperSelena64
2016: I'll write a little script to automate ten steps of installing ITS on a PDP-10 emulator.

2024: It has taken over my life entirely.

@SuperSelena64 @foone I gave my retro consoles away to the first person with green hair and pronouns I could find when I left the US, because I knew damn well I was never going to get an NTSC NES running usefully in Europe. I hope she’s taking good care of them!
@SuperSelena64 I don't share this experience at all. My SNES, NES and Famicom have never been tinkered with and still work fine. Although the Famicom is extremely difficult to run on a modern european television. Maybe it's a Nintendo thing.
@SuperSelena64 The gaming to technical skills pipeline is real!
@SuperSelena64 This also applies to retro computing

@SuperSelena64 2080: "FROM THE MOMENT I UNDERSTOOD THE WEAKNESS OF MY FLESH IT DISGUSTED ME. I CRAVED FOR THE STRENGTH AND CERTAINTY OF STEEL.

FOR THE MACHINE IS IMMORTAL."

@SuperSelena64 there's a secret fourth stage where you start *building clones because it's cheaper than the original hardware*

I am at that stage.

@DosFox (that's actually what I was trying to show in that last panel with the stuff on my desk. The PICO-8 is my own custom build. I built the Vectrex controller from scratch. That Game Man is a Game Boy I consolised)
@SuperSelena64 Impressive, though. I keep trying to do hardware, and never get very far. It's daunting.
@SuperSelena64 So true!
And wow, drawing too? You have so many talents!
@SuperSelena64 @SyntaxError JUST GOTTA RECAP THIS BOARD, INSTALL AN RGB BYPASS AND GET THAT SCALER THEN THE PIXELS WILL LOVE ME :-D
@SuperSelena64 there's one remaining step in the process, designing your own reproductions and mods. Don't worry though, kicad is easy to learn.
@SuperSelena64
I went the other route with retro emulation handhelds XD
