Today is Overcast's 10th birthday, and to celebrate, I'm launching a major rewrite of the app: https://marco.org/2024/07/16/overcast-rewrite

The first decade has been great, and this new foundation brings it into the next one!

(Spoiler alert: It's fast. REALLY fast. And there's more coming soon.)

Ten years of Overcast: A new foundation – Marco.org

@overcastfm Wow! It’s been 10 years! Congratulations and keep up the good work on the only podcast player I’ve ever used.
@overcastfm love it! Is it possible to reorder playlists on the home page?
@nickfoster @overcastfm I was wondering the same thing. I don’t see an option.

@joshuabryant @nickfoster @overcastfm He warned on Under the Radar that some reasonably well used features wouldn’t make v1 of the rewrite but might come later.

I will miss that if it’s really not there.

@ruffin @joshuabryant @overcastfm I assume so, and that’s totally okay! I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing it
@overcastfm Congrats on the rewrite! I’m running into an issue where sync fails every time I open the app, and it won’t show the podcast list. It will only show the episodes on top.
@999happyhants Could you try Settings, Sync Profile, Refresh All Data?
@overcastfm congrats! it immediately felt faster.
@overcastfm It looks great, and play/pause toggling is now much more responsive, which is a great (and constantly noticeable) QoL improvement. Congratulations! Syncing playback positions between devices doesn't seem to be working for me though, and pull-to-refresh doesn't do anything
@overcastfm @marcoarment probably not looking at the right place, but it seems like I can't navigate by chapters any more. Running ios 15, voiceover turned on. Otherwise, loving the new app.
@ysotomayor @overcastfm @marcoarment I found it: on the now playing screen, choose the “info” button, then there’s a chapters button which says the number of chapters, e.g. “10 chapters button” in the podcast I’m currently playing. From there you can navigate like a boss. :)
@SteveSawczyn @overcastfm @marcoarment Yes, I found it too. But every time I click the chapter, it does not jump to it. Are you seeing that too?
@ysotomayor @overcastfm @marcoarment Ah yes, that seems to not be working. IF the episode is not playing, double tapping on a chapter button just starts it playing at current position. If episode is playing, double tapping chapter button just gets me out of the chapters screen. :(
@SteveSawczyn @overcastfm @marcoarment Just tried it with voiceover turned off. It also dismissed the chapter window. I think this is not a voiceover thing, but a jumping between chapters might be a bit broken.
@SteveSawczyn @overcastfm @marcoarment I just checked it with another podcast, and it does not jump me to the section. It just dismisses the chapter screen and puts me back in the show notes.
@SteveSawczyn The chapter button is right there on the now playing screen. There’s no need to hit the ⓘ Info button first.
@SteveSawczyn @ysotomayor Sorry, there will be more direct VoiceOver access to chapters in the next build.
@overcastfm @SteveSawczyn @ysotomayor The TestFlight version is tons better already. Thank you so much for the quick responses.
@JeffBishop @overcastfm @SteveSawczyn Ok, extra props to Marco. That was fast. Bug fix today fixed all the issues I had. NOW chapters work again, and I can fully enjoy the new app.
@ysotomayor @JeffBishop @overcastfm Wow it’s fixed? I will have to get that update. I was working on a blog post with the current accessibility issues, Marco’s apparently fixing them faster than I can write them.
@overcastfm @SteveSawczyn @ysotomayor Can we get the badge counts on the podcasts like we had in the older release to show with VoiceOver? This way, I know how many episodes are in a specific podcast that I am touching.
@JeffBishop @overcastfm @SteveSawczyn @ysotomayor Ditto for the number of episodes in a playlist.
@overcastfm congratulations the rewrite looks incredible. I have noticed that when I reach the last episode in a playlist it does not cycle to the top of the playlist for any unplayed. This was the default behaviour in prior version.
@overcastfm further to this, I found a setting for “Play Top Episode Next” in Nitpicky Details to resolve this.
@overcastfm as someone who used Overcast for many years when I was originally on iphone 🫡

@overcastfm is Family Sharing (premium subscription) gone, temporarily removed, or not there due to error?

Didn’t see mention of it in your announcement post (what’s gone / to come), wasn’t seeing option to restore purchases on my wife’s phone — then looked in App Store and not seeing family sharing under “Supports” header.

@jkrahn No changes there yet — I've never supported Family Sharing for the IAP. But I’m investigating it for the future.

@overcastfm oh, my mistake! Sorry about that. Thanks for the reply.

Loving the redesign btw — and it’s so fast!

Wife loves the new episodes list at top, and love that I can turn it off.

@overcastfm congrats @marcoarment! The new design looks great and feels even better
@overcastfm I’m liking the update! Only annoyance was banner ads automatically turning back on despite being a premium subscriber. It was an easy enough fix to toggle it back off, though.

@overcastfm Congrats! 🎉🎊🍾

Here’s to another 10!

@overcastfm Congratulations!
I've been waiting on this to push Overcast to some of my friends. 🙂

Quick question, to @marcoarment, or anyone else who might know:

Is it possible to import/export the list of RSS feeds?

For moving between podcast apps...

@havn @overcastfm @marcoarment Looks like that feature was removed in the update? Or if it’s still there, I can’t find it
@overcastfm Congrats Marco on both 10th anniversary and shipping the rewritten version!
@overcastfm Looks great! It does appear that sorting isn’t working properly on my priority playlist, even if I change the sorting. It doesn’t seem to do anything. Thanks!
@TimH @overcastfm I am also seeing problems with sorting. The app seems to want to group episodes together and refuses to sort chronologically. I have tweaked settings on and off, but the behaviour persists.

@TimH @overcastfm I’m possibly seeing this too. When listening within a playlist, I will manually move some podcasts up to listen to next, rather than listen to in purely chronological order, and it looks like that sort order is being periodically reset.

All podcasts, including things I’ve already listened to are being resorted into chronological order.

@overcastfm The update feels fantastic! Congrats.

@overcastfm love the redesign! Well done!

It’d be really neat if you could customise a button in this spot, for me I’d like to quickly set the sleep timer in 20 minute increments (20-90 mins)

@overcastfm Magnificent update! Very much appreciated! Just letting you know that a bunch of old episodes of Fresh Air keep re-inserting themselves into my playlists (I rely on the "episode limit" setting to remove those episodes from my playlists). Is this a known bug in the new version, or has the behavior of episode limits changed?
@MattLeidholm @overcastfm Same here. I’d like for episodes older than the limit I have set to disappear unless I go looking for them in the ALL tab. I’d like to only see downloaded episodes in my playlists.
@overcastfm @marcoarment new app looks fantastic, here’s to ten more (ten year updates, that is)
@overcastfm happy 10th and congrats! Like it so far, it’s fresh, but familiar, excellent job.
@overcastfm congrats! Plans on syncing more than 1 playlist to the AppleWatch?
@overcastfm congrats on release. getting used to it.
@overcastfm Congratulations, it looks really good. first question: how do I quickly add an episode to the Queue? Preferably from the scroll of new episodes. I like to scroll through those and add some number of them for later. Thanks.
@overcastfm Congratulations!! Here's hoping for another decade!
@overcastfm congrats on shipping!!! already loving the new design
@overcastfm I have been an Overcast user for so long that I have forgotten what made me so mad at the Apple podcast app that made me switch. But since then I’ve never looked back. Overcast has been my constant companion and it doesn’t let me down. The only feature that I still wish it had is a listening history list. Sometimes I forget to set the sleep timer and I wonder which episodes I slept through.
