Some of our bike rides over the last couple of days.
1. Collecting wood and other supplies for our continuing kitchen renovation project.
2. Taking some old metal to be recycled by a guy who lives at a nearby traveller camp.
3. Taking the old freezer to the recycling centre.
4. Picking up our grandchild from daycare.

After taking the old freezer to the recycling centre a couple of weeks ago it was the turn of our old oven today. The same 12(ish) km round trip, much of it using the same excellent smooth and direct cycle-path.

One small part of the oven stayed behind. It had a timer module using a nice old-fashioned green vacuum fluorescent display, so I removed that in case I can think of a use for it in the future. At the very least I thought it'd contain a relay that I could perhaps use.

It turns out that the relays operate on 24 V, which isn't great for me. But my favourite part in the timer is the TMS1070. This is part of the TMS1000 family of processors used in a lot of calculators in the 1970s. It's a four bit embedded processor with 1 kB of masked ROM and 64 nibbles (half bytes) of RAM.

The TMS1070 variant of the chip switch the higher voltages used by vacuum fluorescent displays, which is of course required in this example.

There's a bit more information about the TMS1070 here:
http://www.datamath.org/Chips/TMS1070.htm

You'll note the 1990 date code (the oven was 34 years old). I also have another digital clock with a TMS1000 derivative in it dated 1976. It's been powered up pretty much full time since then and still works perfectly:

37.8 km/h. That was Tadej Pogacar's average speed for yesterday's tour stage.

I had the same average speed yesterday... But not for long. If I'd been able to keep it up for 200 km instead of just the 10 km distance between home and the start of our group ride, without a howling tail wind, and including climbing several of the Pyranees then perhaps I'd also be in France right now.

We can all dream, but I know of course that that was always way beyond my ability. Pro cycle racers are *astoundingly* strong.

Anyway, here are some photos from yesterday's 100 km ride with @twilwel and @TheoZw, which was carried out at a much more moderate and sociable average speed, including stops for lunch and other things, including visiting some mastodons.

And here are a few photos from last week. I cycled past one of the very many small war memorials in the Netherlands.

Typically, all you can see from the road is a sign which reads "Monument 1940-1945". In this case it led to a very discrete memorial to six men who died on an attack on this barn.

The action was part of Operation Amherst: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Amherst

I think it's notable that one of the brave men who died at this location in a fight to restore Dutch freedom was Syrian.

80 years ago there were Syrians fighting to help the Dutch. We can now help Syrian refugees.

Sadly, our current government does not treat refugees from Syria, or other lands, with respect.

Today I took parcels to the post office. When I can I do this with the normal town bike. It's by the door, ready to go. But sometimes I need the cargo bike for larger boxes.
If your parcel was on my bike today then you'll already have received email to tell you that the bike parts that you ordered are on their way to you.

Dutch Bike Bits

Tried and trusted parts for Dutch Bicycles, or bicycles that would like to be a bit more Dutch.

@hembrow Thanks for the pics. Where in Drenthe was this? Re your comment on the attitude (certain part) of the Dutch society: being kind to refugees has been an issue for the Dutch before. I watched this weekend the movie #OneLife. It was mentioned that passing with Jewish refugees (from Prague) to England, was complicated as the Dutch borders were closed for (Jewish) refugees. This was before WW2 started.

@SebastiaanHekman As @VickForcella pointed out, it's on the Koelenweg near Assen.

I've not seen One Life yet, but I want to. I do remember seeing the TV programme on which it turned out that everyone else in the audience was family of someone he'd saved. Quite an amazing moment:

As for the borders, it was much the same story everywhere. Chaotic and often unjust. I think there are a lot of parallels with the current situation.

At least one ship full of refugees which sailed to the US was turned away, and some of those people ended up being accepted in NL:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_St._Louis

The UK didn't offer citizenship to Einstein (who surely should have been seen as a benefit to any country) and that's at least part of why he ended up in the US.

There are so many examples.

@hembrow @VickForcella That was indeed quite a moving moment in the film. Won't say more about it....*spoilers and all that*..., Hopkins is, as always, very strong, as is his mother. Her accent is perfect.

Indeed, there are quite some parallels with today's situation (Re. Refugees). After the movie I searched for some more info and came across this page: https://www.quest.nl/maatschappij/geschiedenis/a34641366/nederland-vluchtelingen-opvangen-tweede-wereldoorlog/ (in Dutch).
One thing that struck me is the reasoning of the catholic and protestant parties to block, push back, expell refugees. Very much in line with the PVV. Chilling.

Zo ongastvrij was Nederland in de jaren 30 voor vluchtelingen

In de jaren 30 vluchtten veel Duitse Joden voor het bewind van de nazi's. Ook naar Nederland. Maar hier waren ze helemaal niet welkom. Lees hier waarom!

@hembrow @twilwel @TheoZw
I stopped at the top of a climb today to gasp for oxygen. A passing cyclist asked if I was OK.
I shouted at him that "I ain't no Pogacar" his reply was "none of us are"!
