@hniemeyer Also, "pipx install yt-dlp" pulls the successor from pypi. Blocking pypi would be massive overblocking.
@hniemeyer I don't think it's DNS, I think they hijacked the host?
@matus_chochlik
You likely already know this, but for anyone stumbling here thinking it is entirely unavailable:
yt-dlp works better anyway, youtube-dl kinda died, unless it's been reinvigorated.
@matus_chochlik There is a fork of youtube-dl called yt-dlp that I've been using after other issues that cropped up with youtube-dl.

Also, would this site work instead? http://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/download.html
@matus_chochlik you can use alternative front-ends for youtube with convenient download buttons :) Like this one:
@ArnimRanthoron Indeed it is.

Uberspace findet:
@matus_chochlik It's blocking me on every country I try on the VPN, even USA and Australia. Looks like its more like a DNS or ISP block.
Oh well. Cut one head...

@matus_chochlik I don't think it's blocked in the EU. Rather, the web host (uberspace.de) is based in Germany, so it falls under German jurisdiction.
Absolutely not defending this kind of censorship, I would consider this a flagrant abuse of intellectual property law. But as a jurisdictional question, this seems relatively uncontroversial.
